A group of girls discover that if they put on costumes found in their neighbor’s attic and look in the attic mirror, it will send them to other times and places, where they have magical adventures.

Sometimes, they go back in time to places in our world, and sometimes, they go to fantasy lands. Even when they go to historical places in our world, the books tend more toward fantasy than historical reality, and they don’t attempt to teach historical facts, as some other time travel books do. During their magical trips to other times or other worlds, the adventures the girls have give them new perspectives and help them to address issues in their regular lives, such as problems with friends or quarrels with parents.

The first four members of the Magic Attic Club are Heather, Megan, Alison, and Keisha, but they are joined by two other girls later in the series. There are also hints that the girls’ mother may have had similar magical adventures when they were young.
