Emily Elizabeth owns a big, red dog named Clifford. In fact, Clifford is a humongous dog, about as big as the house where Emily Elizabeth lives with her parents. Clifford lives in a doghouse behind their house that’s a little larger than the house itself.

Clifford’s extra large size is the basis of the stories. Emily Elizabeth can do things with her dog that people can’t do with normal-sized dogs, like riding him into the city for a visit. Sometimes, Clifford can rescue people from danger in ways that other dogs can’t. However, Clifford’s size can also cause problems because when he fetches things, he often brings back more than people expect, he can crush things when he rolls over, and when he chases cars, he can actually catch them.

The Clifford books are by Norman Bridwell. The picture book series has been very popular for decades, and Clifford is now the official mascot of the publishing company Scholastic. There have been tv series based on the books.
