The Corduroy books are about a teddy bear. In the first book, which is the best known, Corduroy was living in the toy department of a department store, waiting for someone to buy him. However, he was missing a button on his overalls, which made people pass him by. Fortunately, a little girl name Lisa loves him and buys him and gives him a new button herself.

Originally, there were only two books in this series, the only two written by the original author, Don Freeman. Later, other authors continued the series. These later books differ in format from the original two. In the original books, Corduroy is definitely a toy teddy bear who lives with his child owner. In the later books, he sometimes seems to be living independently of humans and having fun and adventures with other toy friends. Also, some of the later books are board books or lift-the-flap books, where children can lift flaps that are part of the picture to see things hidden underneath.
