Spot is a puppy who has fun and adventures with his parents (Sally and Sam) and animal friends. Sometimes, Spot acts like a normal puppy (doing things like eating out of a dog dish), and sometimes, he acts like a small human child (going to school with his friends). However, there are no humans in the books, and Spot and his family frequently interact with and are friends with different species of animals, all of which talk and some of which seem to be present in his own home with no explanation.

Often, Spot teaches children about things that young children routinely encounter in life, like what it’s like to go to school for the first time and what it’s like to visit a friend in the hospital, and about basic educational concepts, like shapes, colors, numbers, and words.

One of the most notable features of this series is that the very first Spot book was also the first modern lift-the-flap picture book for children (although there was an earlier style of lift-the-flap books from the 18th century). The author of the series, Eric Hill, developed the concept for a lift-the-flap book after watching his young son playing with sheets of paper on which he had drawn concepts for an advertisement, lifting them up to look underneath.

Not all Spot books are lift-the-flap books, but many of them are. Others are ordinary picture books, with no special gimmicks, and others have different gimmicks, like stickers, pop-ups, or the ability to make sounds.

Some of the books in the series have more than one title because Eric Hill was British, and some of the titles of the books have words often used in Britain that would be confusing to American children, so the titles were changed for the American versions. The books that I have are the American versions.

There have also been television shows and other media based on the series.
