There are ten short, scary stories in this book, not thirty. The author explains in the beginning that the name comes from an expression kids used when she was young. The “dark-thirty” was the last half hour of light before it became truly dark outside, and the kids had to hurry home so they wouldn’t be out after dark, when the monsters came out.
