Carmen Learns English

Carmen is in kindergarten and has been learning English at school. Her little sister, Lupita, will start school next year, and Carmen thinks about how she wants Lupita to learn English before she starts school. The family is from Mexico, and the girls speak Spanish at home.

School hasn’t been easy for Carmen because the other kids don’t speak Spanish. They all speak English, and they speak fast, which makes it difficult for Carmen to follow their conversations. It helps that her teacher knows some Spanish. Her teacher’s Spanish isn’t very good, but in a way, Carmen finds that comforting because her teacher will understand if her English isn’t very good, either. People who are learning another language understand what it’s like when someone else is learning, too.

Carmen gradually learns new English words at school. When she gets home, she draws pictures of what she’s learned and teaches her mother and little sister the English words. At first, Carmen is too shy to say the words out loud at school because she isn’t confident about how she’s saying them, but she practices at home.

Sometimes, kids at school give Carmen a hard time. Some kids think that she talks funny. When she counts in Spanish instead of English, they think that she’s saying the numbers wrong. Her teacher helps by teaching all the class to count in both Spanish and English, so all the students will learn both languages. Carmen helps to teach the other students words in Spanish, and when she gets home, she teaches Lupita the English words that she has learned.

Because Carmen has been helping Lupita to learn English, Lupita will have an easier time at school than Carmen had when she started. Carmen realizes that she really likes teaching, and she thinks that she might like to be a teacher herself someday.

I thought this was a good story about a child starting school while having to learn a new language at the same time. My mother used to teach English language learners, and she liked the story, too. She said it reminded her of some of the students she used to teach.

I thought that the teacher’s approach, having Carmen teach the other kids some Spanish while she was learning English was a good idea. Some of the other students find Carmen a little strange and confusing at first because they don’t understand the way she speaks, but when they start trading words in different languages, they all start to understand each other better. The other students begin to understand the concept that people can speak in different languages and that there can be different words that mean the same thing, depending on the language they’re speaking. I think it also helps them start to identify with Carmen because, like her, they are also starting to learn an unfamiliar language. As I said, people who are learning a new language or who have studied another language before can understand the difficulties of now always knowing all the words they want to say or exactly who to say them and can sympathize with other people who are also learning new languages.

I also liked it that Carmen realizes that, if she helps her sister to learn some English before she starts school, her sister will have an easier time. She has compassion for her sister because of her own experiences and wants to make things easier for Lupita. By helping both her sister and her fellow students, she also learns that she likes sharing what she knows with other people. She discovers that she likes teaching and might want to be a teacher herself someday.

I read this book as an adult because it’s a relatively new book that didn’t exist when I was a kid, but it reminds me of another book that I did read as a kid, I Hate English, which is about a girl from China learning English. The Chinese girl has some similar troubles learning English and feeling uneasy around people who don’t understand her, although she also struggled with the fear that she would lose her native language or cultural/personal identity by learning a new one. Carmen doesn’t mention that in this story, but some of my mother’s old Spanish-speaking students had that worry when they were learning English, too. Perhaps part of the reason why Carmen doesn’t feel like that is because her teacher encourages her to teach the other students some Spanish, giving her the opportunity to keep speaking it from time to time and share the language with others. In a way, this story was closer to my experiences when I was younger because Carmen is like the kids my mother used to teach and because Spanish is what I studied in school myself.

Understood Betsy

Elizabeth Ann is an orphan who lives with her Great-Aunt Harriet and her first-cousin-once-removed Frances, who she calls Aunt Frances. Her relatives took her in when she was only a baby, after her parents died, and her life with them is the only one she has ever known. Her relatives love her, and Aunt Frances is particularly devoted to her. Ever since Elizabeth Ann came to live with them, she has devoted her entire attention to the little girl. She reads anything she can find about how to parent a child and makes it a point to know everything that’s going on in Elizabeth Ann’s life at school and sympathize with her over ever difficulty and misfortune she encounters. Elizabeth Ann certainly doesn’t lack for attention and affection, but Aunt Frances’s devotion and sympathy often go a little too far.

Aunt Frances is rather an anxious person, and she has unintentionally transferred many of her worries and anxieties to Elizabeth Ann, making her a rather timid and fearful little girl. She has also made it such a point to shield Elizabeth Ann with so much attention that Elizabeth Ann is never allowed to go anywhere or do anything by herself, making her feel like she can’t do things alone. Aunt Frances tries so hard to shield Elizabeth Ann from anything difficult or unpleasant that any difficulty she does encounter seems unbearable. While Aunt Frances’s intentions are good, and she tries hard to always understand and sympathize with Elizabeth Ann about everything, but there are some things about both Elizabeth Ann and herself that Aunt Frances doesn’t really understand. Then, when Elizabeth Ann is nine years old, something happens that changes her life forever.

When Great-Aunt Harriet gets sick, the doctor says that she must go to a warm climate and that Aunt Frances is going to have to take care of her. However, the doctor is adamant that Elizabeth Ann shouldn’t go with them because he doesn’t want to risk the girl catching Great-Aunt Harriet’s disease. Elizabeth Ann can’t imagine life without Aunt Frances, and Aunt Frances worries about where Elizabeth Ann will stay. Her relatives in Vermont, the Putneys, say that they are eager to have her. They would have taken her when she was a baby, but Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances never trusted the Putneys. They say that they are not sympathetic enough and that life on their farm would be too harsh for the delicate, sensitive little girl they have decided that Elizabeth Ann is. Instead, they decide that she should go live with some other cousins who live in the same city they do.

However, these relatives aren’t particularly eager to have her, and after Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances have already left town on their train, they discover that a member of their household has come down with scarlet fever (what strep throat can turn into if it isn’t treated with antibiotics) and that the household must be quarantined. There is a brief moment of panic when they realize that they can’t even bring the girl into their house. Then, they remember the Putneys. If Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances couldn’t bring themselves to send Elizabeth Ann to these other relatives, these cousins can. In fact, they must, and there’s no way Elizabeth Ann can argue, even though she is afraid of the Putneys because of all the negative things she’s heard her aunts say about them.

A relative who is traveling on business takes Elizabeth Ann partway by train and then makes sure that she gets on the right train to go to the Putney’s town in Vermont alone. Timid, fearful little Elizabeth Ann finds herself traveling completely alone for the first time to go to a place she’s never been and meet relatives she is sure she won’t like. Fortunately, many of Elizabeth Ann’s preconceived ideas are turned on their head from the first moment she steps off the train and is greeted by Great-Uncle Henry.

If it had been Aunt Frances greeting her, Aunt Frances would have immediately worried and fussed over her and asked her how she stood the ordeal of traveling. However, Uncle Henry acts like Elizabeth Ann hasn’t been through any ordeal at all. Instead, he just greets her cheerfully and helps her into his wagon. In fact, as they drive along, he unexpectedly gives the horses’ reins to Elizabeth Ann and lets her drive while he does some math. (We don’t know why he needs to do this; he just says he does.) He just tells her to pull on the left rein to make the horses turn left and the right rein to make them go right. Being handed this unexpected responsibility is terrifying for timid little Elizabeth Ann, and she has a moment of panic, worrying that she doesn’t always remember her left from her right. Then, Elizabeth Ann has an unexpected revelation: it doesn’t really matter if she doesn’t remember the names for the directions or which is which because she can just look and see where she wants the horses to go and pull the reins in that direction, no matter what that direction is called. After all, it’s not like horses really understand the words “left” and “right” anyway, just the direction of the pulling. This is an important revelation for Elizabeth Ann, who is usually accustomed to Aunt Frances doing everything for her, including her thinking. She has never really had to figure out things by herself before. When she voices this revelation to Uncle Henry, he simply agrees that she is correct, and Elizabeth Ann feels a rare sense of pride in her accomplishment.

When they reach the Putney Farm, Great-Aunt Abigail and Cousin Ann are glad to see her, but they don’t overly fuss, either. They call Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” and show her the hook where she can hang her cloak. Betsy is a little offended that they don’t help her take it off and hang it up for her the way Aunt Frances did. Their lack of fussing and expecting her to do things for herself makes her feel at first as if they don’t really care about her. Their farmhouse is also fairly small, it’s lit with kerosene lamps, and they do their own cooking instead of having a servant, like Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances did. These things make Betsy realize that the Putneys are poor, and she has a moment where she is overcome, thinking that she will be miserable in a poor, deprived household. Then, Aunt Abigail hands Betsy a kitten and tells her that, if she likes it, it can be her cat.

Betsy always wanted a kitten, but Aunt Frances would never let her have one because she was afraid that they would carry disease. Betsy forget her worries and misery while playing with the kitten, which she names Eleanor. She is also relieved that her relatives don’t fuss about her not liking certain foods. Aunt Frances always tried to make her eat her beans for nutrition, but the Putneys don’t care when she avoids them because she has a good appetite for everything else on the table. In fact, Betsy eats much more at the Putney farm than she ordinarily does because she is allowed to eat more of what she likes and nobody fusses over how much she’s eating or if she’s eating the right things. For her first night at the farm, Betsy has to sleep with Aunt Abigail because her room isn’t ready yet, but she ends up finding Aunt Abigail’s presence reassuring.

In the morning, her relatives decide to let her sleep in because she’s tired from traveling. When Betsy wakes up, she lies in bed for a while, waiting for someone to tell her to get up. When no one does, she get the idea, for the first time, that she can get up when she’s ready and doesn’t need for someone to tell her to do it. She also dresses herself and does her own hair for the first time. In a way, it’s a little thrilling because Betsy realizes that she can do her hair the way she wants it instead of the way Aunt Frances does it, and she copies a hairstyle she envied on one of her old classmates. However, it does bother her a little that her relatives don’t seem to care about whether or not she needs help and aren’t stepping forward to help her automatically. She does fine, but she’s accustomed to an adult hovering over her as a sign of caring.

Her relatives explain that they were letting her sleep as late as she wanted that day because they knew she would be tired. Cousin Ann gives her breakfast and lets her have as much milk as she wants because, unlike in the city, they produce their own milk from cows rather than buying it in quarts, so they don’t have strict limits on how much they can have in a day. Betsy is pleased by this, but she has another moment of panic when Cousin Ann tells her to wash her dishes after breakfast. Betsy has never washed her own dishes before and doesn’t know how. Seeing Betsy’s hesitation, Cousin Ann offers a view brief instructions, and Betsy accomplishes the task.

On her first day, she also sees Aunt Abigail making butter, something that Betsy has never seen before. She is accustomed to buying butter, not making it, and she didn’t even know before what butter is made from. Aunt Abigail is astonished that Betsy doesn’t know these things, but Uncle Henry points out that city life is different, and Betsy has probably seen things they haven’t, like how roads are paved. Betsy gets excited because roads being paved is a familiar sight to her, but she becomes embarrassed and confused when her aunt and uncle try to ask her questions about how the workmen do it. While she has seen roads being paved before, she took the sight for granted and never really noticed the details. Aunt Abigail suggests to her that she watch the butter making process closely and even take part in it so, if someone asks her later how it’s done, she can tell them all about it. Betsy accepts the lesson and even has fun making butter.

Then, her relatives surprise her by telling her that it’s time for her to go to school for afternoon lessons. They let her miss the morning lessons so she could rest, but now that she’s rested and had some time to look around the farm, she should go to the afternoon lessons. Worse still, they tell her that she should walk there by herself. Betsy panics again because Aunt Frances never let her walk to school by herself, but her relatives just give her a few directions to the school and a sugar cookie to take with her and send her out the door. Betsy could balk at this and say that she can’t do this and won’t, but their expectation that she can and will and her hesitancy to tell them differently make her walk down the road in the direction they say.

She almost misses the schoolhouse because it’s a much smaller building that she expected. Her school in the city was a multi-story building, but the local school is just a small, one-room schoolhouse. Fortunately, the teacher has been expecting her and looking out for her arrival, so she calls Betsy inside as she passes. Betsy is astonished at how few students there are, compared to her old school, and because there are so few, all the grades are just in that one schoolroom.

Even more confusingly, Betsy learns that this little school doesn’t do grades the way her old school did. Because there are so few students, and they’re all sharing the same room, it doesn’t matter too much what grade each student is studying in which subject. The teacher just moves them up and down as necessary to help them learn at their own, individual levels. At her age, Betsy knows that she should be in the third grade at school, but when the teacher has her read out loud with the other students at the third grade level, Betsy does much better than they do. She loves reading, and she reads all the time on her own, so she has progressed much faster in her reading skills than other children her age. Her teachers at her old school just never noticed because they were trying to keep track of so many students that they couldn’t pay that much attention to individual students’ progress. Her new teacher decides that she can read at a seventh grade level. Betsy is stunned and proud. The idea that she could move up multiple grade levels at once never occurred to her before as an option, but then, she worries that she can’t move up to seventh grade because she isn’t very good at math. She tries to explain this to the teacher, but the teacher isn’t concerned because she doesn’t make students study at one, consistent grade level for every subject. They can move ahead faster in some subjects than in others. When they’re struggling with one subject, she holds them back in that subject alone until they’ve mastered it. She does put Betsy back one grade level in math when she sees that Betsy is struggling, telling her that she can move up later when she’s had some time to review the material and improve.

It’s what Betsy really needs, but Betsy finds it disorienting that she isn’t part of one, consistent grade level at school. She says that she doesn’t know what that makes her, and the teacher replies that she is simply Elizabeth. Before, Betsy’s concept of school was that, every year, the students would simply move up one grade level, and that the goal of school was just for the students to move up through the levels appropriate to their age. Now, she is being introduced to the concept that the goal of education is for her to master the concepts being taught to her, regardless of the grade level, so that she will have the ability to do things like math, reading, and spelling. As long as she can learn to do these to a satisfactory level and keep improving, her specific grade doesn’t matter. In fact, when Betsy is upset later about failing an examination at school because she was nervous and made a lot of mistakes, Cousin Ann tells her that there’s no need to be nervous and that her grade on a single examination doesn’t matter because, regardless of how she did on that particular test, she knows that she actually does know the material and can use that knowledge in daily situations.

Betsy is also unexpectedly given the responsibility of looking out for a younger girl at the school, Molly. Because Molly is so good at reading, the teacher has Betsy listen to Molly read at the first grade level and asks her option of how Molly did and if she seems like she could manage the second grade level reading. Betsy has never had an adult ask her to supervise anyone younger before, and she unexpectedly discovers that she likes it and likes teaching someone younger. Later, Betsy is asked to hold Molly’s hand while they cross a log over a stream because the teacher wants older children to hold the hands of the younger ones and help them. Actually, holding Molly’s hand helps Betsy more than it helps Molly because Molly has walked on this log before and Betsy hasn’t, but being responsible for someone younger makes Betsy more bold. Although she would have been afraid to walk that log if she had to do it by herself, she can’t refuse when she has the responsibility of helping Molly. Later, she also helps to rescue Molly when Molly falls in a hole and needs help to get out. Betsy wanted to run for help at first, but when Molly begged her not to leave her alone, Betsy decides that she should do what Cousin Ann would do and figure out how she can use the things around her to solve the problem, spotting a branch that helps the younger girl climb out. Even though Betsy gets scared, when she has someone smaller than herself depending on her, she finds her courage.

Betsy has other adventures with Molly and her other new friends while living with the Putneys. When Molly’s mother becomes ill and has to go to the hospital, Molly is upset because she will have to move in with some cousins in the city who don’t really want her. Having been in this type of situation before herself, Betsy is immediately sympathetic, and she gets her relatives to agree to let Molly stay with them. Molly becomes like a little sister to Betsy, and they share in other adventures together. Along with some other girls from their school, they form a sewing circle to make some clothes for a poor boy at their school who lives with a stepfather who spends all of his money on alcohol. The book doesn’t shy away from describing how the boy is neglected, and the girls in the sewing circle are moved to tears when they go to the boy’s house to deliver the new clothes and see the circumstances he lives in. The Putneys also become concerned about the boy’s welfare, and they help arrange for him to be adopted by a man they know who has been talking about adopting a boy. Later, for Betsy’s birthday, Betsy and Molly go to the fair with some neighbors, but they are accidentally left behind when the people who were supposed to give them a ride home had to leave to tend to an emergency. Betsy is terrified, but with Molly to look after, Betsy manages to keep her head and think of a way to earn some money so they can buy train tickets home.

Betsy has been living with the Putneys for about a year when she gets a letter from Aunt Frances, who says that she will arrive soon to reclaim her. Aunt Frances thinks that Betsy must have been having a miserable time without her, but Betsy has actually come to think of the farm as home and loves it there. She doesn’t want to hurt Aunt Frances’s feelings or seem ungrateful for all the love and attention that Aunt Frances has lavished on her over the years. It seems like Betsy has to resign herself to returning to her old life in the city … unless Aunt Frances has also been making some changes to her own life since they were last together. When Betsy and Aunt Frances meet again, they truly come to understand each other, and they find a way for them all to live their best lives.

I really enjoyed this book! I’d heard about it for years and never got around to reading it before. Dorothy Canfield Fisher was an early advocate of the Montessori method of education in the United States, and in particular, this book presents many of the principles of the Montessori method and how it can help children. The educational themes in the story are obvious when Betsy sees the differences between the one-room schoolhouse in the country and her old school in the city.

The benefits of the smaller class size are immediately obvious. Betsy loves reading but she always hated her reading class in school because each student took turns reading, so the most any particular student could read was one or two sentences, and even then, they might not get a turn if the class ran out of time before they got to all of the students. This description feels like an exaggeration of how reading classes might have gone at a bigger school, but there may be some truth in it. When I was at school, my classes typically had about 20 to 30 students in them, and when we took turns reading, we did more than that. It’s difficult to say for sure because I don’t think Betsy ever said exactly how many students were in her class, but I would think they would have to have at least twice as many as that to be as bad as she described. According to Going to School in 1876, some large city schools could have classes of 50 to 60 students during the late 1800s, so that is possible for a class in the early 1900s or 1910s as well. I do take the point that it’s easier for a teacher to keep track of the progress of individual students when the class size is smaller.

I also appreciated what the teacher said about allowing students to progress faster in subjects that are their strengths, even if they have to take extra time for problem areas in other subjects. When I reviewed The Beast in Ms. Rooney’s Room, there is a boy in that book who was held back a year in school because of his problems in reading, and he was embarrassed about not moving to the next grade with his classmates. If he could have moved forward in some subjects, it might not be so embarrassing for him to be held back in the one subject that gave him the most trouble. The problem is that he couldn’t do that because the classes at his elementary school are organized the way the ones at my old elementary school were – one single teacher at a particular grade level teaching all of the subjects for that grade level. Under that system, remaining at a particular grade level in one subject means remaining at that grade level, with that teacher for all subjects.

There is only one teacher at the one room schoolhouse in the story, so there’s no conflict about a student seeing one teacher for some subjects and another teacher for other subjects at a different grade level. All of the students are in just that one room with one teacher all the time, so the only difference when a student moves up or down in level for a subject is the book that the teacher gives them to study. That means that changes in grade level can be done informally for any or all subjects, whenever the teacher decides that a student is ready to move to the next level. The student just turns in their old book and gets a different one to study. If most grade levels were determined that easily for different subjects, I think there would be fewer parents who would be concerned about the prospect of holding a child back a grade temporarily to give them a better grounding for moving forward later, and students would experience less embarrassment about problem subjects if they could receive acknowledgement for better skills in other subjects. However, I can see that this system would be complicated in bigger public schools, and there would have to be a point when the student would have to master their series of subjects at a particular level to know when they could graduate from their school. I think that’s part of the purpose of the examinations Betsy describes in the book, but because the book only covers a single year, we don’t see what happens when a student is ready for graduation.

In the beginning, Aunt Frances, in spite of all of her good intentions and research into psychology and raising children, unintentionally transfers her personal anxieties to Betsy without really giving her the tools that she needs to manage them, so they feel overwhelming to Betsy. The solution to this problem, as presented in the book, seems to be mostly being around people who do not express worries about things (if they’re nervous about anything, they mostly cover it up and don’t talk about it, except for one time, which I’m going to talk about) and who present manageable challenges to Betsy to show her that she can handle more than she thinks she can. I like the part about giving Betsy manageable challenges and some basic instructions for how to accomplish them when she doesn’t seem to quite know what to do. If they had just thrown challenges at her with no instruction at all, in a kind of sink-or-swim fashion, I think she would have been just overwhelmed and more panicky. However, I think there’s a point in the story that could use more clarification.

The differences between Betsy’s sets of relatives is initially presented, particularly by the aunts she’s been living with, as one of understanding and sympathy. Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances initially don’t like the Putneys because they don’t seem sympathetic enough, especially with people who are sensitive and nervous. Aunt Frances dedicates herself to sympathizing with Betsy about everything and talking to her about everything in her life, and the book presents this as a negative because their sympathetic conversations about the worries they have end up being a way of making each other more nervous. I think, in real life, there’s a happy medium between never talking about worries and wallowing in them.

The first problem with Aunt Frances’s attempts to sympathize with Betsy is that she makes assumptions that things that bother her will also bother Betsy, and this becomes the way that she accidentally transfers her anxieties to Betsy. Second, when Aunt Frances sympathizes with Betsy about worries or problems, she tends to dwell too much on the problem itself and how bad it feels, magnifying the issue and making Betsy feel worse. What I’m trying to say is that Aunt Frances’s attempts to sympathize would have worked much better if she had been willing to listen to Betsy’s concerns and sympathize a little about how certain things can make a person nervous but then move on to offering practical tips to deal with these feelings and different ways of looking at situations to take some of the anxiety out of them.

I didn’t like it when Cousin Ann seemed to shut Betsy down when she was talking about how tests at school make her nervous because I don’t like the idea of shutting people down when they’re talking about something important to them, but what made it better to me was that she did listen to Betsy for a bit before that and had already offered her a different way to look at tests that makes them seem more fun and less scary. When Cousin Ann cuts the conversation short seems to be the point when discussing and sympathizing is about to turn into brooding and dwelling on the negative. My only thought on that conversation is that it might have helped for Cousin Ann to point that out. Rather than asking if Betsy really wanted to keep talking about this, which makes it sound like disinterest in what Betsy’s saying, I think it might have been better to point out that, if she keeps dwelling on the parts of the experience that make her feel bad, she won’t let herself move forward, to see the parts of the experience that could be exciting opportunities and possible triumphs. Perhaps, it would be good to add that one poor test experience doesn’t mean that others will feel the same way or that she can’t do better the next time, especially if she spends her time in between tests focusing on how much she enjoys what she’s learning and how it can be fun to show others what she’s learned and what she enjoys about her lessons, putting herself in a better frame of mind for the next time someone asks her questions about what she’s learned. I just think that approach would help emphasize the lesson that Cousin Ann would really like to teach Betsy about reframing challenges in her mind and also help clarify that she’s not ending the conversation because she’s not sympathetic but because it’s better to give the positive thoughts time to take hold rather than dwell on the worries.

I think it’s also important for both Betsy and Aunt Frances to recognize that it’s okay to feel nervous but that it’s possible to handle situations even though they make them nervous. As someone who has had life-long issues with anxiety, I can also attest that one of the best approaches is learning not to be afraid of feeling afraid of something. That is, learning to recognize that being nervous isn’t a sign that a situation is unmanageable or that the feeling of anxiety itself is necessarily going to be overwhelming, something that Betsy learns through practical experience in the story. There are still times in the story where Betsy is afraid and has to handle difficult situations, but she learns that she can proceed and do what she needs to do even though she’s nervous and isn’t sure at first how things will work out. It isn’t explicitly spelled out in the story, but this is probably the most important lesson that Betsy was missing from her time living with Aunt Frances.

There are no villains in this story. Although readers can see at the beginning that living with Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances has caused some emotional complications for Betsy because she has taken on their worries and anxieties, they do mean well and have made real efforts to understand Betsy and support her, as best they know how. Great-Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances just have very different, more timid personalities than the Putneys and don’t find their style of communication reassuring or appealing. However, Betsy discovers, to her surprise, that she does come to appreciate the Putneys and that they are a good influence on her, helping her to come out of her shell, discover new abilities and interests, and develop some self-confidence.

At first, Betsy is a little offended that her Putney relatives don’t fuss over her like Aunt Frances did, and it makes her feel like they don’t care about her, but they do care. They are just more low-key in showing the ways that they care. They are a family that doesn’t like to fuss about anything. Personally, I thought that Cousin Ann should have let Betsy talk a little more when Betsy was distressed about doing badly on her exam, but I do see her point that Betsy’s talking about it seemed to be upsetting her more because she was dwelling on the problem rather than consoling herself and looking for solutions or new ways of thinking about the situation. Cousin Ann points out that exams aren’t always negative, and even when one doesn’t turn out so well, it’s not the end of the world, giving Betsy a new way of looking at the situation and defusing Betsy’s sense that every little setback is a tragedy.

The Putneys show how much they truly care when Betsy and Molly are accidentally left behind at the fair. When Betsy manages to get Molly home, she sees her relatives rattled and upset for the first time when they realized that the girls were lost, and they do some rare fussing over the girls, praising Betsy for her ingenuity in handling the situation. Although the Putneys normally make it a point to deal with things coolly and calmly, they do care about the girls and can get upset if they think there is a serious problem. They are not without feelings. They are also genuinely upset when they think Aunt Frances is going to take Betsy away, each finding their own way to show Betsy how much they care and how much they will miss her.

Fortunately, Betsy is allowed to stay with the Putneys in the end. When Aunt Frances comes to get her, she reveals that, in the year they’ve been apart, she has met a man and fallen in love. She is going to marry him, but marrying him means making some changes to her life, the greatest one being that they are not going to return to their old house. Great-Aunt Harriet has recovered from her earlier illness and has gone to live with another relative, and because her new husband has to travel constantly for business, Aunt Frances won’t be keeping a settled house at all. Aunt Frances, although usually timid, is actually looking forward to doing some traveling. She is still afraid of things like animals and would never be an outdoor/country kind of person, but travel to different cities sounds like her kind of excitement. However, she can see the difficulty of traveling with Betsy. Constantly moving would be difficult for her education, a complication that I was surprised that the characters didn’t spell out when they were talking to each other, given the educational themes of the story.

Betsy and Aunt Frances come to a new understanding of each other and the differences in the lives they want to live when they talk about what these changes would mean for their lives. Aunt Frances doesn’t want to simply abandon Betsy to the Putneys if she isn’t happy with them, but she can see that Betsy does like living there and would be happy to stay. Betsy hadn’t wanted to make Aunt Frances feel abandoned and unappreciated by telling her in the beginning that she wanted to stay with the Putneys, but when she learns that Aunt Frances will be happily married and enjoying the new experience of travel, she is able to tell Aunt Frances that she can see that having her come along would be inconvenient for her and that she would be happy to stay with the Putneys. Neither of them is offended or worried about living apart now because they can see that each of them will be happier with Betsy living with the Putneys. Aunt Frances is now free to get married and go where she wishes with her husband, assured that Betsy is doing fine and living in a stable home with people who care about her, even if it’s not quite living the lifestyle that she would like herself. Aunt Frances also promises to come visit sometimes, so it’s not a permanent goodbye.

Going to School in 1876

Earlier, I covered Going to School in 1776 by the same author. The earlier book was written around the US Bicentennial, when many authors were revisiting patriotic themes. This follow-up book is set a century later than the first, the time of the US Centennial. The author’s earlier book, Going to School in 1776, explains what Colonial American schools were like, and this book explains what schools were like after the US had existed for 100 years, how they had changed in the 100 years since the Colonial era, and what society needed and wanted education to become.

The book starts off with some information about America in 1876. Ulysses S. Grant was President, there were 37 states in the United States, the country was recovering from the Civil War, and there was a huge exhibition in Philadelphia to celebrate the Centennial. The Centennial Exhibition included exhibits by American industries, showing off new inventions, such as steam engines and sewing machines, and there were exhibits contributed by other countries. Now that railroads and telephones were linking different parts of the country, the general outlook was one of optimism and a fascination with progress.

However, American society was still largely rural. Since newspapers only had limited ranges of circulation, there was no mass media that could reach everyone, the spread of information wasn’t entirely reliable, and news often depended on word of mouth. Education also varied widely throughout the country. The concept of public schools, with taxes paying for anyone who wanted to attend, was controversial. The book says that some people resented the idea of “paying for the schooling of rich and poor alike,” although it doesn’t go into detail about arguments surrounding the issue. Although, in the 21st century, there are public schools across the nation, and the idea of public education for children from elementary school to high school is pretty common, there are still people who quarrel with the concept, with assertions like “Why do I have to pay for people who could be paying for themselves?” and “I paid for myself and my children, so why should I have to pay for anyone else?” I think that studying the types of schools that the US had in the past partially answers these questions.

The beginning chapter of this book references the earlier book and types of Colonial schools, like blab schools and dame schools, which no longer existed by 1876. By 1876, it was more common for children to be educated in formal schools and trained teachers, although the quality of schools varied by region, and not all children attended. There were schoolhouses even in rural areas, but not all schools were well-equipped, and some wouldn’t accept all students. Many states were passing laws about educational requirements, but children were still heavily used in labor in mines and mills. To explain the nature of education in the late 19th century, the book explains that it will examine the daily lives of children in that period to show what their living circumstances and schooling were like.

(Note: After a fashion, something like dame schools reemerged during the Coronavirus Pandemic of the early 2020s, when public schools were closed or converted to online forms. During that time, many people turned to homeschooling in various styles, and there were some homeschooling groups with parents sharing teaching and supervising responsibilities for their children and a small group of other children in their homes, which is sort of what the earlier dame schools were like. However, this book was written written long before that happened, and the 21st century version was more an aberration, a departure from the norm for the time period, by people reacting to unusual circumstances.)

From that point onward, each chapter of the book focuses on a different aspect of children’s lives and education in 1876. To illustrate each of these concepts, rather than just stating the dry facts or statistics about 19th century children, the author tells short stories about individual children as examples. Below, I’ve explained what chapters and sections of the book are like and what information they cover, although I changed some of the heading names of the sections to highlight the educational topics covered rather than the stories about children that were given as examples. The titles of some of these sections in the book, which describe the stories rather than the information, wouldn’t make sense without retelling the story, but this book is available to read online for those who would like to explore this topic further and read the stories for themselves.

To give readers an idea about the varying circumstances of 19th century children, the author describes the daily lives of six children, who each live in a different part of the US or in a US territory. Each of these descriptions are told in the form of a short story. The author makes the point that the level of education children of this era receive is based not just on geographical location but also social class, and there were major gaps between the education of poor children and wealthy children. The stories he tells about different children around the country illustrate the point. I was pleased that he not only described the lives of children of various social classes and regions, but he also included a Native American girl in this chapter. The Native American girl example is one of the better and more hopeful examples of Native American education for the period, not one of the traumatic ones of the Native American boarding schools of the 1800s.

(Black people are covered in other chapters as the next-largest racial group next to white people at this time and because the Civil War drastically changed their educational prospects, but I have more to say about this later and in my reaction section at the end. Where race/ethnicity is not stated, assume that the people described are white because that’s the majority race/ethnicity and the assumed general default for this time and location. Asian people or Hispanic people are not mentioned at all in this book.)

Farm Child in Massachusetts

Jim Porter is a ten-year-old boy in a village in Massachusetts. His daily routine involves chores on his family’s farm and attending the local schoolhouse. There were laws in Massachusetts mandating that children attend school from the ages of 8 to 14 for at least 12 weeks a year (that’s about 3 months a year), but these laws were rarely enforced. If a child hated school or couldn’t get along with a teacher, the child might simply quit going to school, and very likely, nobody would do anything about it. Children who stayed in school did so either because they wanted to continue going or because their own parents insisted that they continue going because few other people would care if they did or not. Children’s parents would pay tuition fees to the local school committee, just a few cents a day for each day the child attended school (although even a penny went much farther in the 19th century).

Child Coal Miner

Ten-year-old Patrick Doherty lives in Pennsylvania and works in a coal mine. He works every day, except Sunday, and he is only paid a few cents a day for his work. There are some laws about child labor in his time, but not many, and even those that exist have many loopholes. Many parents of this time are poor and need their children to work and earn more money for the family. For them, it’s a necessity, not a preference. Employers liked child labor because they didn’t have to pay kids much. Some people even said they though it was better for children to work and called laws limiting child labor “soft” and “silly.” The book doesn’t shy away from describing Patrick’s harsh and unsafe working conditions, describing children’s “raw and bleeding” little hands and bodies covered in coal dust, the bad and dusty air in the mines, and cave-ins. The only school in Patrick’s town is the local Sunday school, which teaches a little reading and religious education. The town was built by the coal company. The coal company owns all the businesses and buildings in town, and the coal company says that the children don’t need a school because they’ll learn everything they need to know by working in the mines.

Farm Child in Iowa

Jim Wright is a twelve-year old boy in Iowa. His family used to live in Maryland, but his father moved the family west. They live in a cabin near a lake and grow wheat, oats, and barley on their farm. Jim works on his family’s farm, and he and his sister attend the local schoolhouse for a few weeks each winter, between the planting and harvesting seasons. Iowa has had tax-supported public schools since it became a state in 1846, so individual students do not need to pay when they attend. However, there are no laws requiring children to go to school, and families still prioritize the work that children do at home and on the farm. Jim’s father thinks that a few weeks of school a year are all his children need.

Immigrant Child in New York City

Eight-year-old Tony Wasic is from an immigrant family, and his family lives in a crowded tenement building in New York City. Tenements are a cheap form of apartment where many poor people and immigrants live, and they often have many people crowded into very few rooms, with poor conditions and few amenities. An entire building of people might have only one outdoor toilet and only one water tap outside the building, so they would have to haul buckets of water inside for cooking or baths in wooden tubs. Because of the crowded conditions and poor sanitation, they were often breeding grounds for disease, and they were also often fire risks. Tenement slums could be found in major cities, like New York City and Chicago. New York City established a public education system in 1867, so in spite of their poverty, Tony and his brothers can go to school without paying fees to attend. After school, he sells newspapers to help raise money for his family. His ambition in life is to own a grocery store.

Native American Child in Oklahoma

Anna Crowfoot is a 12-year-old Native American girl. She is part of the Cherokee tribe, and she lives in the part of Oklahoma known as Indian Territory. She knows that her people were forcibly moved from their ancestral lands into this territory by government troops during the 1830s. Not many people during this time are concerned about educating Native American children (the book uses the term “Indian” instead of Native American), at least not in any formal way, but the ones who do offer formal schools for Native Americans see education as a way to “civilize” them, Christianize them, and change their lifestyles from the “savage ways” of Native Americans to that of mainstream, predominantly white/European based US culture (the quotes around the words in this sentence also appeared around those words in the book – those ideas are ones expressed by people of the time and do not come from the author, and the author wants readers to know). In short, the people running schools for Native Americans have no interest in Native American culture and would rather see them give up their culture. Whatever the Native American children learn about their tribe’s culture and history comes from their families at home.

Anna attends a girls-only school, where the girls are taught skills that farm wives would find useful, such as how to cook, how to sew, and how to make medicines from herbs. (Herbal medicines are popularly thought to be more Native American than a white person’s thing, but in the days when most people lived on farms or in rural areas and weren’t very near doctors, everybody had to know how to make a few basic remedies for common ailments. White people did have a tradition of herbal medicines from Europe, but one of the issues with that was that white people were more familiar with plants from Europe than plants native to the Americas. The book doesn’t explain this, but European colonists brought some of the plants that they commonly relied on from Europe, and apart from that, they had to learn how Native Americans used the local plants.) The Native American boys learn how to be farmers at their school. (Exactly how this kind of education differed from their traditional Native American lifestyles depends somewhat on the tribe, but basically, one of the goals was to make Native American society into permanent agrarian settlements, specifically on land nobody else really wanted, rather than nomadic or semi-nomadic, which had been the previous way of life for some of them. They also learned to grow different types of plants than the ones that their society would have traditionally cultivated, more in line with the European-based crops favored by white people.)

Anna is described as enjoying her school and lessons in “some of the white man’s ways” (I added those quotes, just quoting from the book), but she also values the ways of her tribe. (This is one of the more benign descriptions I’ve heard of what “Indian schools” could be like. Real life stories could be much worse, and that’s part of the reason why Native Americans would try to avoid sending their children, if they could.) Her ambition in life is to become a teacher herself and to start a school for Cherokee children that will also teach Cherokee traditions.

Middle Class or Upper Class in Indiana

Nancy Feather is the most fortunate of the children described in this chapter. She is an eleven-year-old girl whose father owns a hardware store in Indiana. They are a “middle-class” family. There are other people who are more wealthy than they are, but the Feathers have a very comfortable lifestyle, with money for some luxury items, including some that modern middle class families would be unable to afford. The Feather family employs a cook and a gardener and even has a summer house at a lake. Mr. Feather is a respected businessman in his community, and like others of their social class, the family is concerned with maintaining a good social image. The Feathers make sure that their children are always clean and neatly dressed in public. The children also learn etiquette, so they make a good impression on people they meet. They value education and culture, and they can afford the best education their community can offer and lessons that are not solely focused on employment skills. Nancy attends Miss Dwight’s Academy, which emphasizes that they teach music, art, classical literature, and French.

This chapter has short little stories about a different set of children from the ones described in the previous chapter. This set of stories focuses on what children wore in 1876. Social class and money are factors in the clothes they wore, but the author also brings in other issues, such as health theories and cultural habits. This chapter seems to further elaborate on the range of lifestyles and daily life activities of children and also helps readers to picture the people they’re reading about.

Boys in Wool Suits

Nine-year-old Fred Hart gets a new suit to wear to the Centennial parade on the Fourth of July in his town. Fred doesn’t want to wear the suit because it’s really too heavy for the summer weather, but his mother insists that he wear it because she doesn’t want him to “catch a chill.” The book explains that there were no vaccines to prevent disease at this time, so parents and doctors recommended other precautions, including wearing heavy clothing year-round to avoid “chills.” (This comes from the misconception that colds are caused by literally being cold instead of by viruses.) Dr. Gustav Jaeger, a German doctor, spread a popular theory that wool was the healthiest clothing, telling everyone that plant fibers like linen and cotton wouldn’t adequately block air from touching or moving across the skin. He also believed that clothes should fit tightly to be less breathable. Not everyone agreed with his advice or followed it, but it was a popular theory that governed the way some people dressed.

Poor Children in Flour Sack Clothes

On the other hand, Anna Jenkins is a poor child in a mill town, and her dress is made from an old flour sack because her family can’t afford anything better. They have to improvise clothing from whatever they can find or have available. She dreams of one day owning a pretty silk dress.

Sailor Suits

Ten-year-old William Smith wears a nice sailor suit to church. He wears a wooden whistle around his neck as an accessory, but his mother tells him that he shouldn’t be blowing it on Sunday.

Fancy Dresses and Accessories for Little Girls

Lucy Preston wears a pink dress decorated with rosettes and a blue ribbon sash with a bonnet and white gloves when she visits her grandmother. Her grandmother believes that proper young ladies should wear pretty and fashionable clothes and “behave in a proper manner.” Lucy’s outfit isn’t particularly comfortable, but her grandmother also believes that sacrifice is necessary for the sake of style. This section of the book notes that children’s fashions of the era are based on adult fashions rather than being designed specifically for children.

Different Outfits for Different Purposes of Young Ladies

Twelve-year-old Mary Trent gets her first corset and a dress with a bustle, fashionable touches that mark her as becoming a young lady rather than a mere girl. She writes a letter to a younger cousin about it. She is excited about her new clothes, although she admits that they are difficult to wear. She finds it harder to breathe in the corset, and she admits that her new button boots are difficult to put on, but she thinks that it’s important to wear the right kind of clothes, and she’s looking forward to wearing them when she visits her aunt.

Her father is irritated with her for being too obsessed with clothes, but Mary says that he doesn’t understand because he is a man. Men of their time wear suits for every occasion. A couple of suits for work and church are about all they need. On the other hand, fashionable women are expected to have different outfits for different purposes, including walking dresses, riding dresses, morning dresses (simpler, more informal garments to wear first thing in the morning for breakfast and other activities at home, before dressing to go out for the day – unlike other dresses of the era, they were more loose and could be worn without a corset – sort of like the 19th century version of feminine lounge wear, although the term “morning dress” later came to indicate a more formal type of outfit in the 20th century), and church dresses. Basically, each of these styles of dresses have features that make it easier to do certain activities, rather than the women having a single outfit that was comfortable and easy to wear for a variety of activities. (See the YouTube video Why Did Victorian Women Change Their Clothing 5 times a Day? for more detailed explanations and examples of different types of Victorian era women’s outfits.) With more variety in styles and additional requirements for different types of outfits, women have more decisions to make in the clothes they choose, so there’s more for them to consider.

Unlike the previous two chapters, this chapter focuses on school systems, school districts, and individual schools rather than describing individual students who attend them. It isn’t clear whether the schools the book describes are/were real schools or if, like the children described earlier, they are intended as just general examples of types of schools and school conditions that existed in 1876. I tried looking them up, and I couldn’t find information about them, so they might be fictionalized examples, but they do work as examples to illustrate school types.

One-Room Country Schoolhouse

The Wexbury District School is a one-room schoolhouse one mile outside of town. The book explains that it was common in the 19th century for public schools to be called “district schools” because they served students in a particular area or district. The local school committee (sometimes called school directors or school board, depending on the area) governs the school, pays the teacher, and maintains the school building, using money collected from taxes. However, they don’t pay the teacher much, and the teacher is also responsible for cleaning the school. Public schools of this type could vary in size and the number of teachers, depending on the needs of the local district, but Wexbury District School is just a small, one-room schoolhouse, so it only has one teacher for all the students, regardless of age or grade level. There just aren’t enough students to separate them out into different rooms with different teachers. The Wexbury District School is a kind of dingy gray little building with a couple of outhouses behind it, and truancy is high because the area has weak laws about school attendance. Most days, less than half of the students in this district attend school. Part of that is due to the poor condition of the school. The book quotes an unnamed Connecticut official’s observation that schools are often less comfortable than prisons. One thing the Wexbury District School has that is considered a new innovation is a blackboard. The book says that blackboards were a new development for 19th century schools, and not everyone thought that they would be a lasting trend.

Small Local School Districts/District Schools

The book explains that school districts in southern and western states are named for the town or the area they serve, and some of them have really colorful names. The example of this is Fly Hollow School in West Virginia. Fly Hollow is a very rural area, and most people live on scattered farms, although many of the local families are related to each other. However, the schoolhouse in 1876 is new because West Virginia only established its public school system in 1872. It’s a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher and ten students, most of whom are the teacher’s younger cousins or nephews. The teacher decides when students are ready to pass to the next grade, and the teacher at this school refuses to pass students until they’re really ready, even though they are relatives of hers. Her standards are strict, and she holds to them.

Pioneer Sod Buildings

By contrast, the Logan County public school in Nebraska, is run out of the teacher’s house, which is only a small sod building. Sod houses, made of bricks of sod, are common for pioneers in Nebraska because wood is rare on the prairies. They only have dirt floors, and the conditions are rough and uncomfortable. However, charmingly, plants will grow in the sod bricks, so flowers will grow out of them and bloom in the spring. This particular school and teacher has only six students, and they are supported with state funds.

Small Private Schools

The Millville Academy is a private school for boys. When the schoolmaster opens the school, he advertises the opening in the newspaper, describing what subjects will be taught at the school and what the school fees are. The schoolmaster will be running the school out of his own home, and he will teach science and classical learning. As part of the school’s services, the students will also be provided with a midday meal. Private schools like this were often found in larger towns, and their students were from upper class families. Along with the academic subjects, they would teach etiquette and proper behavior. The midday meal this school provides is also a lesson in how to behave at a dinner table. The schoolmaster uses some harsh punishments on his students, including locking them in a closet. (Abusive by modern standards.) His lessons are rigorous because he wants to prepare the students to go on to college. The schoolmaster’s credentials for teaching are that he is a graduate of Yale.

Upper-Class Academies and Seminaries

While upper class boys’ schools were called “academies”, schools for upper class girls were called “seminaries.” The headmistress of a female seminary was often an educated woman who was either the wife or daughter of a minister. Sometimes, they came from Europe to teach because upper class American families wanted their daughters to learn another language, such as French. Typical subjects at a female seminary might include spelling, writing, music, drawing, sewing, and embroidery.

Segregated Schools in the South

My summary of this part is going to be longer because I think this requires more explanation. Prior to the Civil War, there was no education for black people in the southern states because black people were slaves. (The book doesn’t explain this, but there were actually laws forbidding teaching black people to read. Occasionally, some sympathetic white person would do so anyway in defiance of the laws, or black people themselves would find a way to learn and teach others, but they were rare exceptions.) After the Civil War, the southern states developed a public education system that provided for the education of both black children and white children, but it was a dual system with separate schools for children of different races. Even with separation between the black and white people, the subject of educating black people at all was controversial in the south, with some people calling it a waste of money.

(Think of it this way: If some people generally didn’t like the relatively new idea of public education because it meant paying for other people’s children to attend school through their tax money, imagine how those people might react when they find out that this is going to include paying not just for the children of friends and neighbors they like or might potentially do business with to go to school but also a group of people they specifically hate and resent. I’m not saying that this is well-reasoned, ethically right, or a healthy mindset, just that this is the sort of thing that might be going through people’s minds at the time. The book doesn’t explicitly explain this, although it does indicate that this is how some people of the time feel without going into specifics. Educating people in general might not objectively be a “waste of money”, but what I’d like to point out is that these people are not being objective but very personal about it. They, personally, don’t want to spend their money, and they especially don’t want to spend it on people they personally don’t like or even want to associate with in their daily lives. We’re about to see what they and their children do in response because the book does explain that.)

The example the book describes of a school for black children in the South is Goose Creek School in South Carolina. It’s a small school with only two rooms, and there is only one teacher. The teacher is from the American Missionary Society, an abolitionist organization founded prior to the Civil War which had an interest in providing education for black people after slavery was abolished. The children at Goose Creek School learn basic subjects, such as reading and writing, mathematics, hygiene, and farm skills. A black boy named Jason attends this school, and he gets teasing and physical abuse from white children and even some other black children because of it. They accuse him of being “uppity” and thinking that he’s “somebody special” for going to school. However, he still wants to go to school, and his mother and teacher encourage him to continue his education because this is an opportunity that people like him never had before.

Because this book only focuses on conditions during one year, 1876, it doesn’t explain the futures of any of the children or schools described so far. However, readers with some historical background will know that this segregated system of education continues into the mid-20th century, until the Civil Rights Movement and school desegregation. Having seen footage of people reacting to school desegregation in the mid-20th century, the behavior of opponents to education for black people described in this 19th century is very similar.

A question readers might ask at this point is, was school segregation limited to only the South? Because of the history of slavery in the South and its previous laws against education for slaves, the idea of 19th century southerners being opposed to their children being educated alongside black people or even black people being educated at all makes logical sense just as a progression of events and in keeping with the long-term attitudes of the people involved in the public decision-making. What I’m saying is that educational segregation is not great but not surprising, given the context. People might expect that attitude in former slave states, and their official dual school systems and Jim Crow segregation laws made the South the focus of desegregation, the area of the country always most associated with the idea of segregation. It certainly isn’t an undeserved reputation.

However, others might point out that even northern states had some slavery, and they still had their share of racism, and that’s also a fair observation. So far, in this book, there has been no mention of racism with relation to any schools or school systems outside of the South, so readers might wonder what was happening in Northern schools with relation to race during the 19th century. I have things to say about that in my reaction section below because I think this is a good topic to cover that’s missing from this book.

Public School in a Large City

At this point in history, large cities already have established school systems, and public education is just accepted as a normal part of life. Because there are many schools in a large city, they are often given numbers instead of names, such as “P.S. 84.” The “P.S.” stands for “public school.” Class sizes are large, about 50 to 60 students in a class. One of the challenges they face is helping students from immigrant families, who are still learning English and adjusting to life in a new country. School superintendents are often political appointments, so there are some accusations that the schools are too political.

Church Schools

Some of the very first schools in the United States were church schools, and there have been church schools here ever since. They were very common during the 19th century. Religious groups of all types had schools of their own, and they taught religious classes alongside more basic subjects, such as reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, and history. Although church schools were familiar features of American education, some people criticized them for being too insular, preventing children from mixing with the broader population, keeping them from being exposed to people with different religions, and confining them to their own ethnic groups.

Kindergarten

There weren’t many kindergartens in the US in 1876. The very first public kindergarten in the US was founded in 1873 in St. Louis. Kindergartens were the concept of a German educator named Friedrich Froebel and were meant to help young children become prepared for regular school. At kindergartens, children would learn to play with other children and become adjusted to the concept of leaving their mothers and attending school. Some people at the time criticized the concept of kindergarten because they thought that it was silly and that young children weren’t developed enough to begin learning much.

Teacher Examinations

Job requirements for teachers in the 19th century were far less strict than in the 21st century. Not all teachers even had a high school education, and when they did, high school was often the highest level of education they had. They were typically graduates of whatever local school system they hoped to teach in. To gain teaching status, they had to pass whatever examination was established by the local school superintendent to establish that potential teachers had sufficient knowledge of the subjects they planned to teach.

Normal Schools

In 1834, American Charles Brooks had an interesting conversation about education with a German man while they were traveling together by ship. The German man described how, in Germany, teachers were given specialized training in order to become teachers. Brooks thought the concept was fascinating, and when he returned to the United States, he promoted the idea of specialized teaching colleges called “normal schools,” which would not only give potential teachers mastery of the subjects they would teach but also instruct them on the theories of education and teaching techniques. By 1876, normal schools were becoming common features of American education, and trained teachers became in demand for teaching jobs. (The book doesn’t mention this, but some state universities, including the one I attended, originally started as normal schools before gradually expanding as larger colleges, and eventually, universities.)

Godey’s Lady’s Book

Godey’s Lady’s Book was a popular magazine for American women in the 19th century, and it influenced American life by influencing American women and mothers. (I’ve mentioned it before as one of the magazines that promoted the concept of Halloween as a children’s holiday, around the same time as this book is set, with ideas for mothers to help set up children’s parties, offering suggestions for decorations, costumes, and games. This book doesn’t mention Halloween, but I like to tie into earlier subjects I’ve covered.) Godey’s Lady’s Book promoted the idea that there should be more female teachers in American schools. There were relatively few respectable professions for women during the 19th century, and teaching was one of the more genteel professions, making it an attractive job for unmarried women. The magazine pointed out that, since married women of the time were expected to give up whatever job they had to care for a household and raise children of her own, they wouldn’t need as large a salary as a man would, if he had a family to support. Because women would work for a cheaper salary and had a nurturing, motherly image, teaching gradually came to be thought of as primarily a women’s profession in the United States, although some people questioned whether female teachers had the same academic rigor of male teachers.

Teaching and Marriage

While teaching was becoming a popular profession for women, it was only for unmarried women. Few school systems would hire married teachers because they assumed married women wouldn’t have much time to teach with their own households and families to manage. Unmarried teachers often lived with their parents or other family members or boarded with other families who lived near their schools. There were opportunities for professional teachers to continue studying educational techniques and to form groups with fellow teachers to share information.

A Day in a Country School

This chapter covers what students often studied in American schools, and it starts with a section about a typical day in a country school. All of the students would typically walk to school, no matter what the weather was like, and many of them had to walk long distances. (This aspect of historical education in the US is what started the old joke about elderly people claiming that they had to “walk to school in the snow, uphill … both ways!”) Classrooms might have an American flag, but the students wouldn’t say the Pledge of Allegiance because it hadn’t been established yet, and they didn’t sing the national anthem because no song had been chosen as the national anthem yet in 1876. Instead, students would start the day with a reading lesson from McGuffey’s Ecletic Readers, a popular set of books with reading lessons and selections of stories and poems. McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers also helped to transmit important pieces of American history and culture in their readings.

The students would then study arithmetic, take a recess break, and then have a writing lesson. When it was time for lunch, the students would eat in the classroom. They would bring their own food or sometimes eat soup the teacher would make on the classroom stove. Then, they would study history and geography, and they might have a spelling bee.

Copybooks

Although many schools use slates for writing practice, students would write their best and most important pieces in copybooks.

Lessons in Discipline

As an example of a kind of inspirational lesson a teacher might use to correct a student’s discipline problems, the book tells the story of a student who is caught in a lie by his teacher. The teacher assigns him to read the story about George Washington and the cherry tree from A History of the Life of General George Washington by Mason Weems. The book notes that many of the incidents of George Washington’s life were fictitious, the book was very popular in the 19th century and used in many classrooms. Weems’s book was the origin of many popular myths about George Washington’s life, and although this book doesn’t mention it, even though Weem’s book was popular, it did receive criticism even during the 19th century for its inaccuracies and fantasies.

Arithmetic

In 1876, it was common for schools to teach students to do mental arithmetic instead of having them write everything down. Mathematics lessons covered the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, plus fractions, decimals, and units of measurement.

Report Cards

Report cards on students’ learning progress and behavior at school were very common and often required of teachers. Teachers might require parents to sign a child’s report card to prove they had seen it, and parents might punish children who misbehaved at school and didn’t do their schoolwork.

School Rules

Large schools might post a list of school rules in the hallway along with the punishments for breaking them. The book presents an example of what might happen to students who misbehave.

Immigrants in School

The book offers an example of what school was like for young immigrants. Schools helped immigrants to learn American history and heritage as well as English, helping them to assimilate to American culture.

School Discipline

The book has an account of how harsh and intimidating school punishments could be. It also describes how some misbehaving children escaped punishment by stirring up other students and watching as they got punished while they put on an innocent act. Sometimes, teachers seemed to take an almost sadistic pleasure in dealing out punishment.

Recess and Games

The book tells an anecdote about some boys who were so busy playing sports at recess that they came back to class very late. Their teacher banned the boys from going to recess for the next five days.

New Teacher

The book describes some boys talking about how they aren’t afraid of their new teacher, but 19th century teachers were tough, strict, and not afraid of administering even physical punishments. The next small section describes the punishment given to a pair of misbehaving boys.

Advice from a Magazine

A girl reads advice on the discipline of children from a magazine. It was becoming more common to allow children some degree of freedom, but obedience to parents was still expected.

Conditions of Poor Children

Life was hard for poor children, and they often faced cruelty and neglect, including harsh physical punishments from employers. Because conditions were getting so bad, citizens in New York formed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Reform Schools

Children who actually committed crimes or were completely uncontrollable might be sent to reform schools, which were also called industrial schools. There were reform schools for girls as well as boys. The children would live at the school, and parents typically paid for the children to be there. Aside from school subjects, children in reform schools also had to perform long hours of work.

Orphans

“Orphans” not only included children whose parents were dead but also children whose parents were simply unable to care for them, perhaps because they were sick, in jail, had no money, or were divorced but neither parent was able to look after the children. Orphanages would care for children until they were old enough to work, and then, they were often hired out as domestic servants.

Circuses

Traveling circuses were a major source of exciting entertainment, and their arrival in town was often like a holiday.

Children’s Books

Popular books for children in 1876 included the Rollo books by Jacob Abbott and Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge. Children also enjoyed books that we might think of as adult classics now, like The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper. There were also magazines for children, such as St. Nicholas Magazine. Sometimes, children would also read sensationalist adventure stories in “dime novels,” although parents might consider this form of literature “trashy.” Parents and relatives might give children books or magazine subscriptions they approved of as presents for birthdays and Christmas.

Baseball

Baseball evolved from several older games involving balls and bats. By 1876, there were organized, professional teams and a national league.

Football and Lawn Games

Football wasn’t as popular in America as baseball in the 19th century. However, there were a few college teams that played against each other. Popular lawn games in the 19th century were croquet and lawn tennis.

Swimming

It was popular for children to swim in local ponds. Boys would often swim naked in ponds, although swimsuits were required for public beaches.

Playing in the City

Children living in big cities could play in parks, in vacant lots, or just out in the street. Girls often liked to play hopscotch, and boys would play tag. Poor children didn’t have much time to play because they often had to work. However, parks offered green spaces where children could explore among the trees, watch birds and squirrels, or play with toy sail boats on a lake.

I included some of my opinions and some additional historical information within the review itself, but there are a few more points I’d like to make. I looked up this book because I found the first one, Going to School in 1776, fascinating, and I wanted to see what this book would say about changing education in the US from the 18th century to the 19th century. What I appreciated about both books was that they connected the types of schools children attended and the types of education they received to the actual, daily lives of children at the time and the types of lives that they were likely to lead as adults. No matter the era, I think that the type of education a child receives reflects both the realities of their current life and the kind of life that adults caring for them think that they are likely to lead in the future. In the context of 19th century children’s lives, their levels of education and the attitudes of their families toward education make sense.

However, we know that not only did schools not stay the same between the 18th and 19th centuries, the conditions of education in the 20th and 21st centuries are different yet from either of those. Even my own childhood school experiences from the late 20th century aren’t quite like what kids have been experiencing in the early 21st century, and that’s just a difference of about 30 years. Part of that is due to changing technologies since my childhood, but also, it’s about changing expectations about the lives that children will eventually lead. Not only are there almost no jobs in 21st century America that will hire anybody who doesn’t have at least a high school education, there are relatively few jobs that pay a living wage that don’t require either a college education or some form of professional training or certification beyond high school. The schools children attend in the 21st century have that in mind.

One of the controversies about modern education is the way that schools address topics like racial issues. Some schools definitely handle topics like this more effectively than others, but ignoring the issues is not an option for 21st century schools because modern people mix more with people of different cultures and racial backgrounds. Kids have to grow up understanding more about other people’s backgrounds and how to interact with other people than, say, a kid who lived on a 19th century farm and spent most of his time with his own family and occasionally people from nearby farms or the nearest small town. If you rarely see other people in general and almost never interact with anyone whose background is different from yours, then learning to understand other groups of people and how to speak to and about them politely would not be a high priority. (I talked about this when I was reviewing Little House in the Big Woods.) However, that is not even remotely the type of life people in the 21st century have, unless they’re deliberately trying to isolate themselves. Anybody who is reading this review, no matter who they are or where they are, has Internet access and, by extension, the ability to speak to people from all over the world. People of the 19th century were pretty excited by the concept of communicating with people over distances by telephone, but the idea of communicating with large numbers of people around the world would have been incredible to them. The school systems of the 19th century would never be able to prepare students for the kinds of lives people live in the 21st century, which is why we have the school systems we have today instead of the ones we used to have.

In the section about segregated schools in the southern states, I pointed out that the book doesn’t address whether or not schools were segregated in the northern states or anywhere else in the country. I’m going to discuss that here and also point out some of the reasons why segregation and discrimination in the South stood out more than other places.

There was also segregation in northern states, but just as schools and school systems varied, racial laws and conditions also varied by location. In the United States, schools have always been regionally governed, and there can be considerable variation on the way schools are run from region to region, depending on who lives there and what their priorities are. There were both official laws segregating races in various public settings in northern states and unofficial customs and economic factors that effectively created segregated circumstances that weren’t covered by laws. Because I think this is an important and complicated issue that the book doesn’t cover, I want to give a brief run-down of these factors.

As some people have observed, historians tend to focus more on the unofficial factors of racial segregation when it comes to the northern states instead of discussing the formal laws, and I think that’s partly because the southern states had a much more visible system of segregation. Given the South’s history of institutionalized slavery and their official “separate but equal” school systems prior to the Civil Rights Movement, everyone has watched the South’s racial issues much more closely since the Civil War than they have other parts of the country. The South’s stance on segregation was a very visible and deliberately enforced part of public policy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of course, none of that means that the North didn’t have its problems and its own bad behavior and segregation laws. It was more that what it looked like in the northern states was different from what it looked like in the South because of the South’s position in the Civil War and because racial demographics were different in the northern states, compared to the southern states.

Prior to the Civil War, even in northern areas where black people were allowed to attend schools, there was an official policy of segregation. Soon after the end of the Civil War, official legislation “outlawed school segregation in all northern states except Indiana.” However, just as formal school attendance laws were often ignored or rarely enforced when they didn’t suit the people involved, laws forbidding school segregation in the North were also ignored whenever it suited the white people involved. Schools were always managed at the local level, and if the local white people didn’t want black people attending their school, they would find ways to stop them, whether officially or unofficially. Black people had little legal recourse in places where they were outnumbered, wider public opinion was against them, and they couldn’t find or afford lawyers to help them argue their case.

Another factor to consider is that racism tended to be stronger in areas with higher populations of black people, and this applied to both the North and the South. The South had much higher numbers of black people than any area of the North during the 1870s, the focus period of this book, and within the northern states, some areas had higher populations of black people than others. In fact, some areas of the North had few or none. That makes a major difference in the priorities and concerns of the people who were living in these areas.

The 1870 United States Census is telling because it was the first U.S. census to gather detailed information about black people. You can read the full census online, and when you start examining the aggregate population information with race and study the numbers of total population, population of white people, and population of “colored” people, you realize that black people, while still a minority in 1870, were a very large minority in southern states. They were definitely a minority politically and socially, but in some areas of the South, their numbers actually rivaled those of white people. For example, black people made up 46% of the aggregate population in Georgia, and in Mississippi, they were actually the majority at 53% of the aggregate population. In South Carolina, black people were 58% of the aggregate population. By contrast, black people made up only about 1.8% of the aggregate population of Connecticut, 0.26% of the aggregate population of Maine, about 1.2% of the aggregate population of New York, and about 2.5% of the aggregate population of Ohio. The racial demographics were radically different between the different regions of the country, and that changed the ways the racial groups interacted and how the laws in different regions were made. Where there were more black people, there seemed to be more concern about white and black people mixing in public facilities and more rules to prevent it. It also changed how visible the treatment of people of different races could be. One of the lessons I take from this is that making laws that oppress a particular part of the population becomes much more obvious if the part of the population being targeted is about 40% or more of the total population than if it’s only about 2% or less. I think this is a major factor in how visible Southern segregation was and how Northern segregation was easier to overlook.

Because the South had a higher population of black people, they could justify having an official “dual system” of segregated schools. The northern states could not do this in the same way as the South, officially and on a large scale, regardless of whether or not anybody there wanted to, both because most northern states during the 1870s had official laws against segregated schools (whether or not they were being enforced) and also because many areas didn’t have large enough numbers of black people in general to populate a second school system. In rural areas especially, they barely had enough students to justify having even one school, with one room and one teacher. Many of the schools that we’ve seen described for this time period are rural schools and schools in small towns. Many of these small public schools were one-room schoolhouses, serving very small populations of students. Simply because of their overall low populations, not all small towns or rural areas in the northern states would even have black residents, and when that was the case, the issue of where to educate black people didn’t apply to them, and they likely didn’t have to give the matter much thought.

In cases where there were black families in a small town or rural area, there was just no other school or likely not even a second room at the local school to be used to segregate anybody. It was more a question of attending vs. not attending school. Most likely, under those conditions, any segregation would have been more unofficial, established and enforced directly by the attitudes and behavior of local people. Any black people in the area who didn’t feel welcome at the small local school or were actively discouraged from attending simply wouldn’t attend school at all, and because many areas either didn’t have attendance laws or rarely enforced the ones they had, probably no one would say or do anything about it. Their education and training for later life would come largely by engaging in manual labor of some kind and whatever else they could pick up along the way. (This is exactly the situation described for the titular black character in Stories of Rainbow and Lucky in the first installment of the series, written in 1859, on the eve of the Civil War. The white author was aware that things like this were happening in his time period.) The idea of non-attendance sounds bad and like it would set black people far behind white people in their area, and that’s true. However, even white kids during this time often skipped school or only attended sporadically if they were from farming families that needed them to help with farm chores or if they had to work to help support their families. The white kids would still have an advantage from the little schooling they had, but they were still likely to be farmers or doing manual labor, like their parents, rather than prioritizing education or looking to move up much in society or branch out into different types of work.

In larger towns and cities, there was more school choice because the populations there could support both public schools and fee-based private schools for those with the money to pay. Some former slave families went to the bigger cities in the north to find new opportunities and to escape the downsides of the environment they came from. In the larger cities, black people technically could attend public schools by law, although not necessarily without social pressure to not attend public schools with white children, and probably very little or nothing would happen if they didn’t attend because white families didn’t make them welcome or discouraged them from coming because, even in areas with school attendance laws, the laws were only weakly enforced and had loopholes. Where there was a sufficiently large enough population of black people, there was also more opportunity for the local authorities to find ways to segregate them in their neighborhoods. There were even cases where local school systems created some schools specifically for black students, which was illegal under the laws forbidding segregation in education, but could be managed if there was a sufficient number of black people in a particular area to make it seem justified to build a specific school, just for them. As long as they were living in concentrated areas, separate from white people, the segregation could be portrayed as simply providing a school for their particular area but which was meant to make sure that black children wouldn’t join the public schools white children attended. There was also the option for white people who had enough money to send their children to more exclusive private schools that black people would be unlikely to afford. In those instances, neighborhoods segregated by both race and economic status and the unequal ability to pay for a more exclusive form of education could separate well-to-do white families from poorer black counterparts, a form of economic segregation that is still a matter of concern in the 21st century.

There was also the issue that many black people didn’t entirely trust white schools because, having experienced exclusion and abuse, they thought that black children would be better nurtured by black teachers. Why fight too hard to be included in a school system that didn’t want them anyway and where the people there couldn’t be trusted and might just take advantage of them? In those cases, their solution was to form their own private schools or form private schools in conjunction with more sympathetic white organizations who shared common views and goals. If white people could sometimes start private schools out of their own homes or associated with their own churches (as explained in other chapters of this book), black people could do the same. (See Addy Learns a Lesson for a fictional example of a school for black children in Philadelphia during the Civil War.) The downside of this type of solution was that, in the 1870s, so soon after the end of the Civil War, slavery, and the laws that prevented many black people from being formally educated, there were relatively fewer qualified black teachers. Because the families of the students were also poor and struggling, these schools didn’t have much money. There were advantages to forming schools with the help of larger church organizations that also included white people or at least getting support from a larger church to form an all-black school. During the 1870s, state governments also created local colleges to teach people who had been freed from slavery, so the foundations were being laid during this period for more black people to become educational leaders for future generations. Conditions would still be rough and equal for a long time after this, but this period is important for laying the foundations of what was to come.

What I’ve described is just to give you a rough idea of the circumstances of racial segregation in schools and school systems in the 1870s and up to the Civil Right Movement, both in northern and southern states. It’s a complicated issue with a lot of variables. There is quite a lot more to be said about this, and because schools were always governed at the local level, there were considerable variations and options from place to place during every time period. It would be difficult to thoroughly describe every one of them in detail. However, I wanted to explain at least some of the broad strokes and varying conditions and attitudes to the issue to offer a broader view of what this book explains and what it doesn’t about race and education.

A One-Room School

Historic Communities

The book begins by saying that there was a time when not all communities had schools at all. In areas where the population was low, children had lessons at home or from a neighbor, if they had lessons at all. Towns and villages needed enough children living there to support even a small school. (The book doesn’t describe exactly when or where they’re talking about, but it’s implied that this is the United States or the American frontier.) When there were enough settlers in an area for a school, they might make a small log cabin for the school. As populations grew and there were more students, they would build better schools.

Requirements for teachers were different back then than they were today. Most teachers were men because married women were not allowed to be teachers. Only single women could teach. Teachers were also often required to handle rough students as well as teach them, and all ages and grades of students would study together in one-room schools. The teacher would manage the different grade levels by having them dividing them into groups based on their levels and having the different groups take turns reading aloud to her while other students did quiet work, like practicing writing. The teacher would set some students quiet tasks to do while focusing on a different group, and then, they would switch. Teachers were also responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of their school, but they typically assigned students chores to help with that. Local families would provide room and board for the teacher of their community, and they would also contribute toward the teacher’s salary.

Lessons were basic and focused mostly on the “three Rs” – reading, writing, and arithmetic. (Those three subjects contain the letter ‘R’ near the beginning, even if they don’t all start with that letter.) There was often little time to teach anything else, and these were the subjects that were most important to people with the most common jobs, such as farmer, craftsperson, or storekeeper. In schools that taught a wider range of subjects, students would also learn history (mainly focused on the United States), world geography, and grammar.

Small schools often had few books or supplies. Because paper was often in short supply, children would memorize lessons and verbally recite them back to the teacher and would practice writing on slates (small blackboards). When students were able to buy paper, they bought a blank notebook they called a copybook. The paper in the copybook wasn’t lined, so if they wanted lined paper, they had to draw the lines themselves, using a ruler.

A small school might also only have two books for the students to study: a primer for beginning readers (which showed the alphabet, numbers, and some basic spelling words and poems) and a copy of the Bible. The most popular series of books for building reading skills in the 19th century was McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers. The series started with a primer and continued with six readers, each one at a higher reading level than the last one to build more advanced reading skills. In the small, one-room schools, students would work through these books at their own pace. (Since all ages and grade levels were together in one room, there was little concern about each student moving to the next grade at the exact same time as their peers since they were all still going to be in the same room with the same teacher anyway. As long as a student was continuing to come to school and make progress, it didn’t really matter how fast or slow the progress was.)

The book describes the daily routines of students at small, one-room schools, including how they would get to school each day and what they would do at lunchtime and recess. Most children simply walked to school, although they often had to walk long distances to get there. Sometimes, they might ride a horse to school or get a ride from an adult in a wagon or sleigh, if it was winter. Children brought their lunches from home, but some schools also maintained a school garden. Most of the children from these small schools would grow up to be farmers, so gardening was a valuable skill for them to practice, and the students would also eat what they grew in the school’s garden. During the winter, they could make a soup with vegetables they grew on the stove in the schoolhouse (which also kept the schoolhouse warm) that everyone would eat for lunch. The schoolhouse stove could also be used to heat up foods that the children brought from home. Besides their lunch break, the students would also have two short recess breaks during the day. During recess, they could walk around outside, talk to their friends, play games, or play with toys they brought from home, like marbles. Toys were often homemade or easily improvised, such as using string to play Cat’s Cradle.

Sometimes, students would play pranks on their teacher or fellow students, such as hiding bugs and spiders to scare someone, pouring water on their seat if they got up, or covering the schoolhouse chimney to fill the school with smoke and smoke everyone out of the school. The last prank was dangerous.

Punishments for pranks and misdeeds, such as being late or falling asleep in class, were at the teacher’s discretion. They could take whatever form the teacher thought was appropriate for the situation, and they could be as harsh and strict as the teacher thought was necessary. Sometimes, they could be a form of poetic justice, designed to fit the crime. We aren’t told why one misbehaving boy was told to put on a girl’s bonnet and sit with the girls in class, although it might have been a fitting punishment if his misdeed was teasing the girls. (That was just a guess of mine, that the teacher might have decided that, if he wanted to tease girls, he should try sitting in their place for awhile.) Some punishments were meant to teach lessons and reinforce the idea that children should not repeat certain behaviors, such as having the children repeatedly write lines, sentences that spelled out what they were supposed to do or not do. (For example, a student who was late to school could be assigned to write, “I will not be late to school” or “I will be on time to school from now on” a certain number of times.) Other punishments were purely for humiliation, like having a student wear a cap that labeled them as a “dunce”, in the hopes that the embarrassment would keep them from misbehaving again. (This could also be the goal of making a boy wear a bonnet and sit with the girls.) Punishments could even include physical punishments. Teachers were allowed to whip their students, if they though it was necessary, and some teachers even punished children who were physically fighting by making them take turns whipping or hitting each other with a stick. The book doesn’t explain the motive for doing this, but I think that they were probably emphasizing the idea that people who fight get hurt and that getting hurt is unpleasant to discourage them from fighting more in the future. I also suspect that the point of making them take turns hitting each other was to make it equal, so it wasn’t just one person beating up on the other, but that’s just a guess. When the students got home, and their parents found out about what they had done at school that day, they might even get a second punishment, on top of whatever punishment the teacher assigned them!

Sometimes, schools had special events for holidays or academic events that involved members of the wider community. For example, schools sometimes had spelling bees, including some where adult members of the community would watch or participate. Schools often had Christmas pageants, where children would sing songs or recite poems they had memorized or perform a play written by the students themselves. At the end of the school year, students would have oral exams in front of their parents and other community members, followed by a picnic with games.

The book ends with a section of games and activity suggestions designed to show modern kids what it might be like to be a student in an old-fashioned one-room school and compare their own schools to old-fashioned schools.

Books in the Historical Communities series focus mostly on the 1800s in the United States, but they don’t always mention exactly what time period they are describing. It’s often more implied than stated, and that’s true of this book, too. The book mentions the 19th century once or twice, but it doesn’t mention any specific date or date range.

The pictures in the book are a combination of drawings and photographs of real people in historical costumes, reenacting scenes at schoolhouses and the lives of the students. I liked the combination of real people and drawings to illustrate different concepts about life and education in old-fashioned, one-room schools.

There are some concepts of education in a one-room school that fit with the educational concepts of the modern Montessori system, such as having students of different levels being taught together and having students progress at their own rate in different subjects. In a way, I think that the Montessori system hearkins back to this one-room school style of education, and that’s examined in more detail in the classic children’s book Understood Betsy, which is by Dorothy Canfield Fisher, who was an early advocate of the Montessori method of education in the United States.

This is the story of Fannie Farmer and her famous and popular cookbook! When I first heard of the Fannie Farmer Cookbook (originally The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book (1896)), I wasn’t sure whether Fannie Farmer was a real person or if that was just a pseudonym or a marketing name for the cookbook, but Fannie Farmer was a real person in the late 19th century, and that was her real name. The story in this picture book is based on her real life, although details may be fictionalized, and the pictures give the story humorous twists.

In the beginning of the story, a little girl named Marcia Shaw prides herself on how many things she can do around the house and how much help she can give to her mother. However, she’s still a little girl, and there are some things she doesn’t know how to do well. In particular, Marcia doesn’t know how to cook. Now that her mother is expecting another baby, Marcia’s mother decides that she needs to hire some extra household help, especially with the cooking.

Marcia is a little offended that her mother considers her inadequate to help by herself, but when the new help arrives, a young woman named Fannie Farmer, Marcia has to admit that she’s a good cook. Even better for Marcia, Fannie doesn’t consider her cooking techniques trade secrets. She enjoys letting Marcia help in the kitchen and teaching her cooking tips.

Under Fannie’s tutelage, Marcia’s cooking skills improve. Fannie teaches her many important pieces of information about cooking, like how to measure ingredients and how to tell when ingredients are fresh or if they’ve gone bad.

Marcia enjoys learning to cook with Fannie, but she thinks that she’ll never be as good as Fannie because there’s just too much to remember. She doubts that she’ll ever be able to memorize it all. Marcia is amazed that Fannie can keep all of that cooking information in her head. To help Marcia, Fannie decides to write out a notebook with recipes and cooking instructions, including all of the specific measurements for ingredients and detailed information about cooking techniques to make the recipes come out just right.

This is what makes Fannie Farmer and her cookbook so unique for their time period. If you’ve ever seen a very old recipe book or even just old family recipes written down, they often don’t have all of the amounts of ingredients written down, or the amounts are written in very vague terms. Old recipes also offer little to no cooking techniques, like how to tell when it’s time to turn a griddle cake over or how to tell if a cake is done baking. The assumption was that girls (usually girls for this time period) would learn to cook by watching their mothers and by learning from their examples. However, that assumes that their mothers knew all of these cooking tips themselves, that the mothers remembered to tell their daughters what they knew and explained it well enough for them to understand (some people don’t have much of a talent for teaching, even when it’s a subject they know themselves), and that the daughters understood or remembered everything their mothers said. Otherwise, the vague directions in cookbooks and family recipes were of little help, and new cooks had to learn through experimentation or trial and error. Fannie’s approach to cooking, as explained in the story, is an art and a science that anybody can learn if someone explains it well enough, so she puts her focus on recording all of the necessary details of her recipes.

Fannie’s recipe book, started for Marcia, turns out to be very popular with both the Shaw family and their friends and neighbors. As word spreads about it, people start coming by to borrow recipes or get cooking advice. Fannie realizes that there is a lot of demand for better teaching of cooking techniques, and she really enjoys teaching cooking, so she decides to accept a job at the Boston Cooking School.

Before Fannie leaves the Shaws, Marcia borrows the cooking notebook and makes a special cake for Fannie to show her what she’s learned. The cake comes out just right because Marcia has followed Fannie’s directions.

There are hints from the Fannie Farmer cookbook throughout the book, and there is a section in the back of the book with historical information about Fannie Farmer. It also includes a sample recipe for Griddle Cakes.

My Reaction

One of the things I liked about this book is the illustrations. There are eccentric details in the pictures that add humor to the story, like how Marcia stacks a bunch of chairs on top of each other while making candles, so she can make them extra long, and one of her extra long candles appears later, when Fannie shows her how to tell if an egg is fresh by holding it up to a light. For some reason, Marcia’s mother also has a weird habit of licking her dishes when she’s eating one of the yummy recipes, and there is one picture where it looks like she’s lost control of the baby carriage, and it’s rolling away with the baby. I’m sure these aren’t historical details and were just thrown in to be funny.

I think it’s also important to point out that the real-life Fannie Farmer lived an unconventional life for someone of her time period. She was plagued with health problems from a fairly young age. At some points in her life, she was unable to walk, possibly because of a stroke, and when she walked, she had a limp. She never married, but she built a fulfilling career around her talent for cooking. and achieved lasting fame because she wanted to share her knowledge with others. She is credited with establishing exact and level measurements in cooking in the United States, and she was also a strong believer in quality food and proper nutrition, especially for people with health problems.

Two Wheels for Grover

Grover is happy about going to visit his aunt, uncle, and cousins in the country, but the visit becomes a little awkward when his cousin Rosie wants him to go bike riding with her. Grover doesn’t know how to ride a bike.

He points out to Rosie that he doesn’t have a bike to ride, but she offers to lend him one. Not wanting to admit that he can’t ride a bike and being too afraid to learn how, Grover keeps making excuses about why he can’t ride a bike.

There are still plenty of other fun things to do with his cousins, but the problem of not being able to ride a bike still bothers Grover. Rosie keeps trying to find ways around Grover’s excuses, and Grover keeps trying to find new ones. Secretly, he wishes that he could ride a bike with Rosie, but he is too afraid that he can’t. Grover’s older cousin Frank points out to him that he loves playing in the tree house now, even though he used to be afraid to climb up to it.

Grover eventually confides in Frank his worries about riding a bike, and Frank understands. Big Bird once tried to teach Grover to ride a bike, but he couldn’t do it then, and he doubts whether he can learn. Frank says that the problem is that Big Bird’s bike was too big for Grover, but he could learn to ride a smaller bike, like Frank’s old one.

Although Grover is still nervous, he lets Frank teach him to ride, and soon, he discovers that he can ride a bike!

Grover learns to ride a bike just in time for Rosie to come and tell them that someone is giving away kittens. Now, Grover can ride over with Rosie to get a kitten for himself!

My Reaction:

This was a favorite book of mine when I was a kid, even though I found riding a bike much harder than Grover did. Some kids, like me, have more difficulty learning to balance than others, and it was often hard when other kids wanted me to come riding bikes with them when I couldn’t. Learning to ride a bike is one of those rites of passage that most people have during childhood, and it can be difficult for people who take longer to learn.

However, this book focuses on the rewards of perseverance. Just because Grover had trouble the first time he tried to learn to ride a bike doesn’t mean that he can’t do it. Frank understands that Grover is nervous about riding a bike, and it helps that he points out that there are other things that Grover has found difficult before that are now easy and fun for him, like climbing into the tree house. Learning new things can take time and multiple tries, but there are rewards for those who keep trying!

The Phantom Tollbooth

Milo is a boy who never really knows what he wants or what to do with himself.  He is always bored because he doesn’t really know the purpose or point of doing anything.  Nothing he learns in school interests him because he can’t see what he could ever do with the knowledge.  He never bothers to read the books he has, play with his toys, or learn to use his tools because he just doesn’t have the imagination to appreciate them or what he could do with them.

One day, when Milo gets home from school, he finds an unexpected package.  It’s not his birthday or Christmas, but the package is definitely intended for him because it has his name on it: “For Milo, who has plenty of time.”  There is a list of items contained in the package: 1 tollbooth (which must be assembled, according to the directions), 3 precautionary signs (“to be used in a precautionary fashion”), some coins for the tollbooth, a map (with no familiar places on it), and a driver’s rule book (which must be obeyed).  Interestingly, it promises that if Milo is not satisfied with his tollbooth experience, his time will be refunded.  Since Milo doesn’t think he has anything else to do anyway, he decides that he might as well unwrap the tollbooth and set it up. 

Although Milo thinks that the map is purely fictional and that the tollbooth is just a playset, he decides that he might as well select a destination on it for his trip through the tollbooth.  He closes his eyes, puts a finger on the map, and selects a place called “Dictionopolis.” He gets in the toy car, puts a coin in the tollbooth, and goes through it.

To his surprise, Milo suddenly finds himself driving down a real highway, no longer in his own apartment.  He sees a sign pointing the way to a place called Expectations, and he stops to ask a man about it.  At first, he thinks he’s talking to a weather man, but the man corrects him, saying that he’s really the “Whether man.”  Part of his job is to hurry people along, even if they have no expectations.  Nothing the Whether Man says to Milo makes sense to him, so he decides that he’d better just get going.

As Milo drives down the highway, he gets bored and starts daydreaming.  As his mind wanders, the scenery gets duller and grayer, the car slows down, and eventually, the car stops and won’t move further.  Milo looks around and wonders where he is.  It turns out that he’s in the Doldrums, the home of the Lethargarians.  They tell him that thinking isn’t allowed there.  Milo says that’s a dumb rule because everybody thinks.  The Lethargarians say that they never think and Milo must not have thought either because, if he had, he wouldn’t be there.  People usually get to the Doldrums because they’re not thinking, and once they’re there, nobody is allowed to think.  They refer Milo to the rule book that came with the tollbooth.  Milo looks in the rule book and sees that is a rule.  There are also limits on laughing and smiling in the Doldrums.  Milo asks the Lethargarians what they do if they can’t think or laugh.  They say that they can do anything as long as they’re also doing nothing.  Mainly, they do things like daydreaming, napping, loafing, loitering, and wasting time.  They say it gives them a full schedule and allows them to get nothing done, which they consider an important accomplishment.  Milo asks them if that’s what everybody here does, and they say that the one person who doesn’t is the Watch Dog, who tries to make sure that nobody wastes time.

At that point, the Watch Dog shows up.  The Watch Dog looks like a dog, but his body is an alarm clock.  The Watch Dog asks Milo what he’s doing, and is alarmed when Milo says that he’s “killing time.”  It’s bad enough when people waste time, but killing it is horrible!  (The book is full of these kinds of puns. It’s just getting started.)  Milo explains how he got stuck in the Doldrums while he was on his way to Dictionopolis and asks the Watch Dog for help.  The Watch Dog explains that if he got there by not thinking, he can also get out by thinking and asks to come along because he likes car rides.  Milo agrees, and the two of them get in the car.  Milo thinks as hard as he can (which the book notes isn’t easy for Milo because he’s not used to thinking and doesn’t do it too often).  Gradually, as Milo thinks of various things, the car begins to move.  The faster Milo thinks, the faster the car goes.  Milo learns that it’s possible to accomplish a lot with just a little thought.

The Watch Dog’s name is Tock because his older brother is named Tick. However, their names are a mistake because his older brother only makes a tock sound, and Tock only makes a tick sound.  It’s a source of pain and disappointment.  Tock tells Milo about the origin of time and why Watch Dogs find it important to make sure that people use time well.  He says that time is the most valuable possession because it always keeps moving.

When they arrive at Dictionopolis, the gatekeeper won’t let them in immediately because Milo doesn’t have a reason for being there.  Nobody gets let in without a reason.  Fortunately, the gatekeeper always keeps a few spare reasons lying around, and he decides to let Milo have one.  The one he selects is “WHY NOT?”, which the gatekeeper considers a good, all-purpose reason for doing anything.  (I don’t know. I’ve heard that one followed up by an angry “I’ll tell you why not!” before.)

As readers have probably guessed, Dictionopolis is all about words. When Milo enters the city, he finds himself in the marketplace, which is called the “Word Market.”  The ruler of Dictionopolis is Azaz the Unabridged, and when Milo is welcomed to the city by the members of the king’s cabinet, they do so in multiple ways, using synonyms.  Milo asks them why they don’t just pick one word and stick with it, but they’re not interested in that.  They say that it’s not their business to make sense and that one word is as good as another, so why not use them all?  (That isn’t true, but the story tells you why not later.)  They go on to tell Milo that letters grow on trees here, and people come from all over to buy all the words they need in the Word Market in town.  Part of the cabinet’s duty is to make sure that all of the words being sold are real words and have real meanings because people would have no use for nonsense words that don’t mean anything and that nobody will understand.  The cabinet doesn’t seem to care about whether or not the words are being used in a way that makes sense as long as they’re real words. (If you’re familiar with business speak or buzzwords, you’ve probably noticed that much of it works on a similar principle.)  Putting the words into a context that makes sense isn’t their job.  (Later, you meet the person who had that job.)  However, the cabinet does advise Milo to be careful when choosing his words and to say only what he means to say.  They excuse themselves to get ready for the banquet and say that they’ll see Milo there later, although Milo doesn’t know what banquet they’re talking about.

Milo and Tock explore the Word Market.  Milo is fascinated by the variety of words available.  He doesn’t know what they all mean, but he thinks that if he can buy some, he can learn how to use them.  He chooses three words he doesn’t know: quagmire, flabbergast, and upholstery. (I’m surprised he didn’t know the last one because, surely, he has upholstered furniture in his apartment.)  Unfortunately, Milo quickly realizes that he has only one coin with him, and he’ll need that coin to get back through the tollbooth.  Eventually, he finds a stall selling individual letters for people who like to make their own words.  The stall owner gives them some free samples to taste. They taste good to Milo, and the stall owner tells them that sets of letters come with instructions.  Milo doesn’t think he’s very good at making words, but the Spelling Bee, a giant bee, begins showing him how to spell words.  However, the Humbug, a grumpy bug, tries to tell Milo not to bother learning.  The Spelling Bee tells Milo not to listen to the Humbug because he just tells tall stories and doesn’t actually know anything, not even how to spell his own name.

The Spelling Bee and the Humbug start fighting and knock over all the word stalls around them. There is a big mess, all the words get scrambled, and it takes some time before everyone sorts everything out.  By that time, the Spelling Bee is gone, and when the policeman comes, the Humbug blames everything on Milo and Tock.  At first, it seems like Milo will get off lightly because the policeman (who is also the judge) gives him the shortest “sentence” he can think of (“I am”).  Unfortunately, he’s also the jailer and takes Milo and Tock to prison for 6 million years.

In the prison, Milo and Tock meet the Which.  At first, Milo thinks that she’s a “witch”, but she says many people make that mistake.  The Which is King Azaz’s great-aunt, and her job used to be to make sure that people correctly chose which words to use and didn’t use more words than necessary. (A problem that Milo noticed in the market.)  The Which explains that she was thrown into prison because she got too carried away with her job and became too miserly with words. Word economy is good (and something I struggle with), but rather than promoting brevity, the Which started promoting silence instead,. It got so bad that people eventually stopped buying words and the market was failing, so the king had to put a stop to it.  The Which says that she understands now where she went wrong, and Milo asks her if there’s anything that he can do to help her.  The Which says that the only thing that would help her would be the return of Rhyme and Reason.  When Milo asks who they are, she tells him the story of the founding of the Kingdom of Wisdom.

Years ago, the King of Wisdom had two sons, and he was proud of both, but one of them had an obsession with words, and the other had an obsession with numbers.  The king didn’t realize how bad their conflict was growing, and it got worse over time. One day, the king found a pair of abandoned infant twins.  The twins were both girls, and the king had always wanted daughters as well as sons, so he adopted them and named them Rhyme and Reason.  Everyone loved Rhyme and Reason, and they had a talent for resolving problems and disputes. When the king died, he left his kingdom to both of his sons and left instructions for them both to look after Rhyme and Reason. The word-obsessed son, Azaz, established a capital city of his own, Dictionopolis, and the number-obsessed son, the Mathemagician, established the city of Digitopolis.  Rhyme and Reason remained in the city of Wisdom and acted as advisers to the brothers, mediating their disputes.  This system worked until the brothers got into their worst fight over whether words or numbers are most important.  They took this dispute to Rhyme and Reason, who said that both are of equal importance. This satisfied most people, but both brothers were angry because they had wanted the girls to make a definite choice between them. In their last joint act, they banished Rhyme and Reason to the Castle in the Air. Since then, there has been continued fighting between the two brothers and their respective cities, the city of Wisdom has been neglected, and there’s been no Rhyme or Reason to any of it. (Ha, ha.)

Milo says that maybe they could rescue Rhyme and Reason from the Castle in the Air. The Which says that would be difficult because there’s only one stairway to the castle, and it’s guarded by demons. Milo remembers that there is also the matter of them being stuck in prison for 6 million years. The Which says that being in prison isn’t really a problem. Although the policeman/judge/jailer likes putting people in prison, he doesn’t care much about keeping them there, so Milo and Tock can leave when they like, and he probably won’t notice. (Sounds like he’s not very good at the “jailer” part of his job.)  The Which points out a button on the wall, Milo presses it, and a door opens.

When they step outside, the king’s cabinet members come to take him to the banquet that they mentioned earlier. They have Milo and Tock step into their wagon and tell them to be quiet because “it goes without saying.” (Ha, ha.) They take Milo and Tock to a palace shaped like a book, where they meet King Azaz and join the banquet.

The banquet is a pun-filled meal where everyone has to literally eat their words and have half-baked ideas for dessert.  (Half-baked ideas look good, but you shouldn’t have too many because you can get sick of them. Tock says so.)  Nothing makes sense, and even the king realizes it, which gives Milo the opportunity to suggest bringing back Rhyme and Reason.  The king isn’t sure that’s possible, and the Humbug, of course, volunteers Milo and Tock for the job.  The joke turns out to be on him because the king volunteers the Humbug to assist Milo.  Reaching Rhyme and Reason will be a perilous journey, and possibly the most difficult part will be getting the Mathemagician to agree to let them do it.

My Reaction

The Phantom Tollbooth is a fantasy story, but like many fantasy stories, it’s also a morality story.  It’s a little like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which aims to correct children’s bad habits.  Milo’s boredom problems are due to his lack of thought for the things he could do and imagination to figure out how to make use of what he has.  His adventures after he goes through the Phantom Tollbooth help him to see things differently and to learn to use his mind creatively.

However, I wouldn’t say that the story is too preachy.  A couple of parts started to feel a little like a lecture, but it’s set in a fantasy land that feels a little like Alice in Wonderland.  There’s a healthy dose of nonsense that keeps things interesting and fun.  The book is peppered with puns and peopled by a fascinating variety of characters.  There’s the boy who can see through everyone and everything, who teaches Milo to look at things from an adult perspective and helps him to realize the benefit of keeping his feet on the ground (both of those are also puns). There’s the man who is the world’s shortest giant, the world’s tallest midget, the world’s thinnest fat man, and the world’s fattest thin man all at the same time.  Basically, he’s just an ordinary guy who’s noticed that people think of him in different ways when they compare him with themselves.

I was first introduced to this story when I was in elementary school, as many people were.  Our teacher read it to us and showed us the cartoon version.  Parts of songs from that version still get stuck in my head, almost 30 years later.  (“Don’t Say There’s Nothing To Do the Doldrums …”) The part of the story that stuck with me the longest was the Dodecahedron, a shape with twelve sides. If you’ve seen the twelve-sided dice used for Dungeons and Dragons and similar role-playing games, those are dodecahedrons. In the book, the Dodecahedron is talking character as well as a shape, but I remember it because our teacher gave us paper cut-outs to make our own dodecahedrons. I made two of them, and I might still have one somewhere.

Aria Volume 3

Aria Volume 3 by Kozue Amano, 2003, English Translation 2004.

This is the third volume of the second part of a fascinating manga series that combines sci-fi, fantasy, and slice of life. The series takes place about 300 years in the future, when Mars has been terraformed and renamed Aqua (because of all the water on its surface). The human colonies on Aqua are designed to resemble old-fashioned cities on Earth (called Manhome here). The people of Aqua prefer a much slower pace of life than people on Manhome, and aspects of life on Aqua more closely resemble Earth’s past.

The series is divided into two parts. The first two books are the Aqua volumes and introduce Akari Mizunashi, the main character, a young girl who came to Aqua to learn to become a gondolier in the city of Neo Venezia (which resembles Venice). Female gondoliers, called Undines, give tours of the city, giving Akari plenty of time to admire the beauty of her new home and meet interesting people. The two Aqua books are the prequel to the main series, Aria. Aqua covers Akari’s arrival on the planet, her introduction to life on Aqua, and the beginning of her training. The main Aria series show Akari’s continuing training, her progression to becoming a full Undine, her evolving relationships with her friends, and as always, her delight in learning more about her new home and admiring its beauty.

The series has received some criticism for being slow and lacking danger and adventure, but that is not really the point of the series. The main purpose is to show people how to appreciate the small pleasures of life. The sci-fi and fantasy elements (the spaceships, advanced environmental controls, intelligent Martian cats, and even the occasional appearances of the legendary Cait Sith) are mainly background to the stories about the magic of friendship and simple pleasures. Each volume contains a few short stories about Akari and her friends and the little adventures they have on a daily basis and the life lessons they learn. It’s a great series for relaxing when you’re stressed out.

The stories included in this volume are:

First Gale of Spring

It’s been a full year (full Martian year, which is equal to two Earth years) since Akari moved to Aqua and began her Undine training, and she’s happy that it’s spring again! While Akari and Aika are practicing their rowing one day, they meet another trainee Undine, Alice.

Alice is a young prodigy, only 14. Even though she is rather young and still in school, she’s really good at handling a gondola. However, Aika takes an instant dislike to her, partly because she belongs to Orange Company, a rival of Aika’s gondola company, Himeya. Akari tries to be friendly to Alice and tries to invite her to join them for lunch, but Alice is rude and unfriendly to them.

Aika thinks that Alice has an uppity attitude and is disrespectful to them even though they’re higher level trainees than she is. (There is some mild swearing in this part of the story. Most of the Aria series doesn’t have any swearing at all.) To prove her point and put Alice in her place, Aika decides to challenge Alice to a race.

Part of the reason why Alice is so prickly and unfriendly is that she thinks that people look down on her for being young and because they’re jealous of her skills , but she doesn’t realize how her abrasive attitude affects the people around her and their perceptions of her.

Aika has Akari row their gondola in the race, partly so she can use her secret ability to row a gondola backwards really fast, but Akari has her own ideas of how the race will end. Akari is still thinking of the beauty of spring, and even though she makes sure that her gondola will come in second by stopping to pick flowers (the fact that they had time to pick an entire boatload of flowers indicates just how much of a lead they had), she uses them to remind the other girls

Alice actually appeared in one of the prequel books to the Aria series, Aqua Volume 2, as the friend who went with Akari to visit Aika when Aika had a cold. It was the only Aqua story she was in, and this story in the third volume of the Aria series is the true introduction to her character.

Under the Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom

Alicia and Akari decide to go on a picnic to enjoy the beauty of nature in spring. Alicia has a special place in mind for a picnic, but the two of them get lost on the way. Although Alicia remembers that getting to her special spot involves following some old train tracks, when they split off in different directions, she can’t remember which way to go.

Akari picks a random direction. It turns out that the direction she picks doesn’t take them to Alicia’s special place, but they find something else interesting: an abandoned train car underneath a cherry tree in full bloom.

The girls explore the train car and find that part of the roof is missing. They lie in the train car and enjoy the cherry blossoms raining down on them. Akari apologizes to Alicia for not finding her special place, but Alicia says that’s fine because this place is nice, too. She says that sometimes, you have to get a little lost to find something new.

Town Treasure

Akari, Aika, and Alice find a message in an old gondola that they borrow from the gondola repairman while Aria Company’s gondolas are being service. The message is in a small box in a hidden compartment of the gondola, and it turns out to be the first clue in a treasure hunt with a special surprise at the end.

Curious to find the treasure, the girls follow the clues through Neo Venezia, and their search leads them to take a second look at places they pass by all the time with little notice and takes them to lesser-known parts of the city that even Aika and Alice, who were born there, haven’t seen.

The treasure hunt finally ends on an often over-looked stairway that actually provides an excellent view of Neo Venezia, and the treasure they find there is the one that made Akari enjoy the treasure hunt from the very beginning.

The girls decide to put all the clues back where they found them, and to their surprise, they notice that there are marks that indicate that many other people have done the same.

Three Water Fairies

Akari and Aika are training under two of the Three Water Fairies, the best-known Undines on Aqua. However, Aika’s mentor, Akira, is much more strict than Alicia. One day, Aika gets fed up with Akira’s strictness and decides to run away and train under Alicia.

When Akira shows up to reclaim her wayward trainee, Akari learns more about Alicia, Akira, and especially about Aika. Akira was seen briefly in Aqua Volume 2, when Aika snuck out of her room to go buy some pudding, and she was the person Aika was trying to avoid because she was the one making her rest from her cold. However, Akira wasn’t actually introduced until this book, like Alice. This story reveals that Alicia and Akira were friends as trainees, like Akari and Aika, and have had a bit of a rivalry, being considered among the three best Undines, but they haven’t seen each other much in recent years.

Aika had reveals that the reason why she admires Alicia so much is that Alicia was nice to her when she was a child. One day, when she was upset about something, Alicia found her and gave her a ride in her gondola and cheered her up by trying different hairstyles with her hair. This experience is what made Aika want so badly to become an Undine herself. However, Aika could not train under Alicia at Aria Company because her parents actually own Himeya Company, something that Aika has never told Akari before. Aika’s family expects her to work her way up through the ranks as an Undine and eventually take over Himeya Company.

To settle the matter of Aika’s future training, Akira proposes a contest, a race between Aika and Akari, to determine whether Aika will become Alicia’s student or return to Himeya Company with Akira. As Alicia guesses, the “race” between their trainees gives Aika an opportunity to return to Himeya without sacrificing her dignity. It also gives both Akira and Aika an opportunity to consider how they really feel about each other and how much they appreciate each other.

While Akira and Alicia talk about Aika and how she’s both similar to and different from her mentor, Akari and Aika aren’t really having a race. Instead, they talk about how Aika feels about Akira.

Aika says that her position as the future heir of Himeya Company doesn’t matter much to her because she just wants to be an Undine, like Alicia, but she admits that people at Himeya treat her differently from the other trainees because they know who she is. They are extra nice to her and try to avoid getting on her bad side because they want to be friends with the boss’s daughter, who will be their future boss someday. Aika admits that, strict as Akira is, she’s also the one who’s the most honest with her, correcting her when she needs it and not worrying about making her angry. Aika realizes that she needs that honesty in her life and that Akira’s training is helping her. At Aika’s insistance, the girls end their “race” and go buy some walnut pastries for Akira, which Aika offers to her as an apology before returning to Himeya with her. Akari realizes the the bond between Aika and Akira is stronger than either of them wants to admit, and she hopes that, someday, she’ll have a bond that strong with Alicia.

This story is important for explaining more of the backstory of the characters and how they relate to each other. There is a running theme in these stories of having characters whose names begin with the letter ‘A’. In most cases, I don’t mind because the names are usually different enough that it doesn’t matter, but Akira and Akari are rather close.

Festa del Boccolo

Festa del Boccolo is the time when men give red roses to the women they love. Akatsuki has had a crush on Alicia for a long time, and he enlists Akari’s help to give her a boatful of roses to impress her. He needs her help because the town is flooded during high tide again, as it is every year during late spring.

Unfortunately, his elaborate gesture doesn’t go as planned because Alicia has already received many other roses from other people, and she assumes that Akatsuki has bought all of his roses for Akari.

Akatsuki accidentally spills the roses in the water, while trying to get Alicia’s attention. He thinks that he’s completely screwed everything up, but Akari points out that his gesture wasn’t futile because, like the roses floating on the water, his love for Alicia spreads out around him and touches everyone, and one day, Alicia is bound to notice. Akatsuki gives Akari a single rose to thank her for her help, and the two of them enjoy a walk together through the flooded city.

Aqua Volume 2

Aqua Volume 2 by Kozue Amano, 2003, English Translation 2008.

The is the second volume a fascinating manga series that combines sci-fi, fantasy, and slice of life. The series takes place about 300 years in the future, when Mars has been terraformed and renamed Aqua (because of all the water on its surface). The human colonies on Aqua are designed to resemble old-fashioned cities on Earth (called Manhome here). The people of Aqua prefer a much slower pace of life than people on Manhome, and aspects of life on Aqua more closely resemble Earth’s past.

In the previous volume, a young girl, Akari Mizunashi, came to Aqua to learn to become a gondolier in the city of Neo Venezia (which resembles Venice). Female gondoliers, called Undines, give tours of the city, giving Akari plenty of time to admire the beauty of her new home and meet interesting people.

The two Aqua books are the prequel to the main series, Aria. Aqua covers Akari’s arrival on the planet, her introduction to life on Aqua, and the beginning of her training. The series has received some criticism for being slow and lacking danger and adventure, but that is not really the point of the series. The main purpose is to show people how to appreciate the small pleasures of life. The sci-fi and fantasy elements (the spaceships, advanced environmental controls, intelligent Martian cats, and even the occasional appearances of the legendary Cait Sith) are mainly background to the stories about the magic of friendship and simple pleasures. Each volume contains a few short stories about Akari and her friends and the little adventures they have on a daily basis and the life lessons they learn. It’s a great series for relaxing when you’re stressed out.

My First Customer

Akari gives her first customer a ride in her gondola. Although she makes mistakes, it is still a memorable experience, and she makes a new friend. Her ability to row a boat very fast backward even comes in handy!

It’s good to read the books and stories in this series in order because characters reappear. Akari’s first customer is Akatsuki, who is a trainee “Salamander” who lives on the floating island of Ukijima above Neo Venezia, which is reached by cable cars. Because Akatsuki spends most of his time on Ukijima, he tends to get lost when he comes into town. He becomes an important character who makes regular appearances through the books. There’s a story later in this book that explains more about his job.

It’s Hard Being President

President Aria feels useless because he can’t help with the spring cleaning. He decides that he isn’t a good president to Aria Company and tries to run away from home but learns that there is nowhere else where he is happy and that his friends still love him.


Night-light Bells

In the summer, people in Neo Venezia buy special night-light bells, chimes that glow in the dark.

These bells do not last forever because the glowing center eventually falls out, but sometimes they leave something special behind besides happy summer memories, a tiny crystal.

Akari goes to a night light bell festival and gets a night light bell of her own. The night light bells are a cheery part of summer, and when it’s time for them to expire, the people of Neo Venezia have a special ritual to return the glowing centers to the water when they fall out. However, Akari is lucky and gets one of the bells that has a tiny crystal when the center falls out.

I like this story because I think that the idea of having glow-in-the-dark wind chimes is really charming.

Enter the Hero!

President Aria dreams of being a super hero, like the hero of his favorite television show.

His attempts to be an ally of justice aren’t very successful until he discovers that even doing something small can make a big difference, returning a lost toy to a grateful child.


Fireworks

Akari and her friends visit the floating island of Ukijima where her friend, Akatsuki, is learning to be a Salamander. Salamanders help control Aqua’s climate. Because Ukijima is anchored above Neo Venezia, they have to use a cable car to get there, and Akari thinks that the view is amazing, like she’s flying when she’s there.

Akari and her friends have dinner wtih Akatsuki, and he shows them around and explains more about how Ukijima works and what his job as a Salamander involves. Neo Venezia experiences different seasons and different types of weather, but the Salamanders help to regulate it and keep it safe for the residents by controlling the amount of heat released into the atmosphere. The processes behind some of the technology on Aqua sound almost magical.

There are many amazing things on Ukijima, but Akari is most entranced by her first fireworks show. Even though Akari has never seen fireworks before, she finds herself connecting with the nostalgia surrounding them, which she realizes is a feeling that surrounds everything on Aqua and in Neo Venezia because the style of living is more old-fashioned than on Earth/Manhome.


Colds and Pudding

Akari and another friend, Alice (who you don’t really get to meet until the Aria series begins – she’s another trainee Undine), go to visit Aika, who is sick with a cold. They find her upset and learn how a simple trip to get some pudding led to a disturbing epiphany for her.

Aika was bored, hungry, and tired of staying in her room, so she decided to sneak out to get some pudding.

While she was walking through the streets, enjoying her freedom without anyone knowing she that she was gone, she caught sight of Akari and Alice practicing their rowing. At first, Aika is amused that she can spy on them without them noticing her, but then, she gets a strange feeling, realizing that, under normal circumstances, she would be practicing with them, but she can’t be with them now.

It feels eerie to her to see people going on with their day without her, as if she didn’t exist or that her absence doesn’t matter. Aika gets so spooked by the feeling that she runs home and goes back to bed, crying.

However, Aika’s friends do miss her and are thinking about her while she’s sick, and they know exactly what she needs. Trust your friends to help you feel better (and bring you pudding) when you need it!

This is the story that convinced me to learn how to make pudding from scratch one day when I was sick at home. You don’t have to go out and get creepy feelings when you know how to make pudding yourself! Pudding is an easy dessert to make; it just takes awhile to thicken on the stove.

Aqua Volume 1

I debated at first about whether or not I wanted to include any Japanese manga or light novels in this blog. When I was in high school and college, I knew a lot of people who were really into anime and manga, and I know that there are teens who still are, and my overview of children’s literature in different decades wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention that. However, the variety is pretty extensive, some of the series run very long, and it’s impossible to just skip around in some series because the story-telling is very linear, and I didn’t want them to take over the blog. Also, I tend to like the less popular ones, so I’d be bound to get some grumbling from manga fans about why I chose these when there are so many others that are more exciting or more iconic. Notice that I didn’t say “better.” “Better” is subjective, and I like what I like. I decided to go ahead and make an exception in this case because this is one of my favorite manga series and because I think this is something that people could really use right now. The stories are very calming, and they’re good to read during stressful times.

This book is the first volume of a series. I don’t have them all because they haven’t all been published in English yet, but know how it ends, and it’s a really good series with a happy ending. If you’re not familiar with manga, they’re basically graphic novels from Japan. I can’t read Japanese, so I rely on the English translations. However, manga like this typically follow the Japanese format of reading from right to left instead of left to right, like in English, so the books open and the pages flow in the opposite direction. When you look at the panels on a page, remember to look at them in right to left order.

The Aqua and Aria series is unusual because it combines elements of science fiction and fantasy, but most of the stories themselves aren’t really either science fiction or fantasy. That’s just the setting for the stories. The stories themselves are more slice-of-life, about daily events or small adventures in the lives of the characters and sometimes lessons they learn from them. The Water Planet

The series begins with Akari Mizunashi on the shuttle carrying her from Manhome to Aqua. She is typing a message to someone on her computer, but there is nothing to indicate who she is writing to. This is a running theme throughout the series, but the identity of Akari’s pen pal isn’t revealed until the very end of the series, and it wouldn’t make sense if I told you who it is right now. Akari explains a little about the history of Mars/Aqua, and how the melting of Mars’s polar ice caps during the terraforming of Mars 150 years earlier has turned it into a water planet, earning it the name Aqua. Currently, the year is 2301.

One of the nice things about the Aqua/Aria series is the imagery. As Akari’s shuttle arrives at Mars/Aqua, the walls of the shuttle turn transparent, so the travelers can feel like they’re flying in with the seagulls.

On Earth/Manhome, Akari lived in Tokyo, Japan. The modern cities of Manhome are very tidy and convenient, with people able to work and shop from home. Still, Akari has felt like something is missing from her life in all the convenience and tidiness. In Neo Venezia on Aqua, people rely on boats constantly to help them get around town, which is inconvenient, but Akari finds it calming and peaceful, which is why she wants to become an Undine, one of the female gondoliers who act as tour guides and help travelers to navigate Neo Venezia. Overall, life on Aqua and in Neo Venezia has a much slower pace than that on Manhome.

Akari arrives on Aqua and meets a friendly mailman and the only two employees of the gondola company she will work for: her mentor, Alicia, and the company’s president, a Martian cat named Aria. All gondola companies on Aqua have a Martian cat as their mascot/president. Alicia explains that Martian cats are as intelligent as humans, even though they can’t talk, but in many ways, President Aria still acts like a very large kitty.

The Guide on the Water

Akari wakes up on her first morning at the gondola company Aria, and she meets Aika, who is a trainee at Himeya, another gondola company. She catches sight of Aika hanging around, watching Alicia, and Aika witnesses Akari’s first time practicing in a gondola under Alicia’s watch.

Akari is embarrassed to learn that when she practiced rowing on Manhome, she was doing it backwards, standing in the front of the boat, which would block the view of her passengers. Because Akari practiced the wrong way on Manhome, she can row very fast the wrong way, but is clumsier when she tries to row the correct way.

However, Aika tells Akari that Alicia is the best of the Undines, and Akari is reassured that under Alicia’s guidance, she will do better. Aika hero-worships Alicia (for reasons that are explained further in later books), and she agrees to become Akari’s friend partly so that she can see more of Alicia. Aika and Akari become best friends through the course of the books, sharing their training and adventures.

The City Submerged

Akari wakes up one morning and is shocked to find that the lower floor of Aria company has flooded, but Alicia explains to her that this is a natural phenomenon in Neo Venezia in Spring.

Much of the city is flooded during this high tide, causing many of the businesses in town to close temporarily and making it unsafe to go out in gondolas. However, when President Aria needs more of his favorite food, Akari decides to venture into the city on foot.

On the way home, Akari and Aria are stranded when it starts to rain and travel become more dangerous, but Aika sees them and invites them to spend the night at Himeya Company with her. Himeya Company is a much larger gondola company than Aria Company, with many more employees living there.

Aika and Akari have a sleepover in Aika’s room, and Aika asks Akari who she’s always writing to, but Akari tells her that it’s a secret. When the rain stops, Akari admires the view of the water by moonlight. (There are two moons in the sky because this is Mars.)

The Kingdom of Cats

President Aria sometimes ventures off alone, and Alicia tells Akari the story of Cait Sith and the mythical kingdom of cats.

When Akari and Aika practice their rowing together, Akari convinces Aika to help her follow President Aira to see if there’s any truth to Alicia’s story perhaps get a look at the kitty kingdom ruled by the legendary king of the cats, Cait Sith.

However, the trip is stranger than they bargained for. The girls find themselves on a strange waterway through apparently abandoned buildings, going around in circles until President Aria points the way out. Akari only gets a glimpse of the cats before they leave.

The Hill of Hope

Aika shows up at Aria company one morning to brag about how she has been promoted to single (the next step up in gondola training, as shown by the gloves that the girls wear – as the trainee Undines learn the techniques to row their boats more skillfully, they get fewer callouses and need their gloves less, removing them one at a time as they are promoted to new levels).

Akari tries to ask Aika what the promotion test is like, but Aika refuses to tell her. The Undines traditionally keep the test a secret from their trainees until they pass the test. When Alicia hears about Aika’s promotion, she decides to take Akari on a special picnic, giving her the opportunity to prove her skills and introducing her to the concept of aquatic elevators, or canal locks. There is a special surprise for Akari at the end of the journey.
