This is the second book in the Stories of Rainbow and Lucky series. I’ve covered the first book this series, and I have to do all five books in a row because the series is set up like a mini-series. That is, none of the books in the series can stand alone; they are all installments of one, longer story. It’s an unusual series from the mid-19th century, written on the eve of the American Civil War, by a white author with a young black hero. Rainbow is a teenage black boy who, in the previous installment of the story, is hired by a young carpenter who is just a few years older than he is to help him with a job in another town. The rest of the series follows the two young men, particularly Rainbow, through their adventures, learning life lessons, even dealing with difficult topics like racism. (Lucky is a horse, and Lucky enters the story later.) The story is unusual for this time period because it was uncommon for black people to be the heroes of books and for topics like racism to be discussed directly. It’s also important to point out that our black hero is not a slave, he is not enslaved at any point in the series, and the series has a happy ending for him. People don’t always treat him right, but he does have friends and allies, and he manages to deal with the adversity he faces and builds a future for himself. Keep in mind along the way that there are a lot of pun names in this series and that people’s names are often clues to their characters.

This book is easily available to read online in your browser through NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN CHILDREN & WHAT THEY READ, I’m going to do a detailed summary below. If you’d rather read it yourself before you read my review, you can go ahead, but some people might want to know what it’s like in more detail.

For most of the last story, the focus was on Handie, his family’s financial problems, the inheritance he receives from his uncle, and how the lawyer who is the executor of the estate arranges for Handie to use the estate to his best advantage. Because Handie is 19 years old, he is still considered a minor. (The legal age is 21 during this time period and would stay the legal age until about halfway through the 20th century.) His uncle’s will specifically stated that Handie cannot take full ownership of the farm that he left to him until he is 22 years old. Uncle that time, the lawyer, Mr. James, will manage the estate on his behalf, using the money provided with the estate to hire someone to fix up the farm to rent it out to a tenant until Handie is old enough to take it. The Level family’s money problems are because Handie’s father is not good at managing his money, and Handie’s uncle knew that if Handie’s father got his hands on his son’s estate, he would probably blow the money and end up having to sell the farm to cover his debts, leaving Handie with nothing.

In the previous book, Mr. James discusses the situation with Handie, and they work out another solution to the Levels’ debt problems. He helps Handie take steps to separate the money he earns from his father’s money, and he hires Handie as the carpenter to work on repairing the farm he inherited on behalf of his own estate. It’s a somewhat odd arrangement because Handie is effectively being hired to work for himself but will be paid by Mr. James on behalf of the estate. Under the circumstances, it’s the best system for solving the family’s money problems and setting Handie up for a better future. 

Because Handie will need a little help while he’s working on the farm, Mr. James also provides money from the estate so he can hire an assistant. Handie offers the job to 14-year-old Rainbow. Rainbow doesn’t have any carpentry experience, but he’s strong for his age and a good worker, and Handie would rather bring someone he knows with him rather than trying to find someone else when he arrives at this new town. At the end of the previous book, Handie offers Rainbow the job as a carpenter’s assistant and tells him that they will be living in the town of Southerton for about 2 or 3 months during the summer while they do the job. The job will involve hard, physical work, but Rainbow can handle it, and this job could give him some good work experience. Rainbow accepts the job offer, with his mother’s permission, and they begin preparing for the journey.

When this story begins, Handie and Rainbow are about to leave the village where they both live. It’s a summer evening with good weather, and they will be traveling by stage coach. When Handie offered Rainbow the job, he didn’t explain that the farm where they will be working actually belongs to him, but word of Handie’s inheritance has spread around town since. Rainbow is astonished at the idea of someone so young having a farm of his own, and he decides that he will ask Handie more about it later, although he knows he should be careful to be polite about asking because he doesn’t want to seem rude by prying. Although these boys are friendly with each other, having grown up in the same small town, they also have a professional relationship now, and Rainbow’s mother impressed on him that he needs to treat Handie respectfully as his employer. They are becoming young men and venturing out into the world for the first time, so they need to learn how to behave professionally with each other, as befits their new, professional relationship. Neither of the young men is experienced with traveling anywhere, and they’re both looking forward to this exciting journey.

Things seem to be going well at the start of the journey, but then, the stage coach driver, while chatting with Handie mentions that he doesn’t like the look of one of the passengers. At first, Rainbow worries that the driver is talking about him because he’s accustomed to people making comments about him, ridiculing him, or telling him that he isn’t welcome among them for being black. Even though they are from a small village, and many people there like Rainbow for his good nature and helpfulness, he’s already seen his share of discrimination. However, the driver is talking about someone else. He explains that there’s a man on the stage coach called Burkill, who is wearing a bright waistcoat. He’s met Burkill before, and he knows that the man is trouble. 

Right now, Handie and Rainbow are riding on the top of the stage with the driver, but when Burkill joined them, he made a fuss to the driver about whether or not Rainbow would be riding inside the coach, objecting to the idea of riding with a black person. The driver, Trigget, who knows Rainbow and doesn’t like Burkill anyway, told him that Rainbow has paid his fare and will ride wherever he wants to: “I don’t pay any attention to the different shades of complexion of my passengers … Rainbow is suitable company for any honest man. You can judge best whether he is suitable company for you or not, and act accordingly.” It’s a bit of a slam. He’s implying that, if Burkill can’t get along with Rainbow, he’s probably not an honest man, and the driver already has reason to think he’s not, so he’d better not make a big deal about it. The other passengers also know Burkill’s reputation, so they get the joke and laugh at Burkill. Embarrassed, Burkill just gets on the stage coach without saying anything else. All of this happens before Handie and Rainbow get on themselves, and they don’t hear any of it, so their choice to sit up with the driver was just by preference, not because they were required to sit there. Trigget just tells them about it later, as they ride along.

(Note: I’m using the term “black”, and so did Burkill when he was speaking, but the driver corrects him, using the word “colored” because “colored” is considered the more polite word at the time this story was written. I’ve explained before that “colored” and “Negro” used to be considered more polite terms prior to the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century. At that point, “black” became the accepted generic word, where it had once been considered somewhat rude, and “African American” became the polite, formal term. I’ve been using “black” in the modern generic sense for the purpose of these reviews because I think the modern audience will find it easier to follow, but this series was meant to be educational for 19th century children, like the author’s other books, so there are points in the story where the characters actually discuss which racial terms are more polite. The general rule they establish is that the best thing to call someone is whatever they would like to be called, and I think it’s a pretty good, general rule. I’m just explaining because it’s a plot point, and the racial words that people use are clues to their characters. Characters who use the wrong racial words are either ignorant or antagonistic, and Burkill falls into the second category. We haven’t know him long, but we’ve already established that Burkill is disreputable and a trouble-maker, and he also uses the wrong racial words and has a racist attitude. Basically, he’s bad news all the way around, and this incident is establishing his character for readers and setting the scene for further misbehavior from him.)

The author of this series likes to include detailed information about daily life in his stories for educational purposes, which is a boon to modern people who like learning about the details of life in the past. Some of what he says might have once been common knowledge to 19th century people, but it’s really helpful for people studying history. In this case, we leave off the racial talk to talk about the trials and tribulations of travel in the mid-19th century. 

While they ride with Trigget, Trigget asks Handie about his journey to Southerton and the inheritance he’s heard about. Handie explains to him about the farm he’s inherited and his arrangements with the lawyer, so Rainbow gets the rest of that story without needing to ask. Trigget explains that the stagecoach needs to be in Southerton by 4 o’clock because there’s a train that leaves Southerton at that time. Some of his passengers will want to be on that train. However, he’s also carrying mail on the stagecoach, and it’s even more important for the mail to make it there on time than the human passengers. 

Handie asks if people shouldn’t be considered more important than letters, and Trigget explains, “the passengers go at their own risk. We get them through if we can, but if we can’t it is their misfortune. We don’t absolutely engage to get them through at such a time. But as to the mail, it is different. We contract with the government to deliver it, without fail, at four o’clock at the station, and if we don’t do it we have a heavy fine to pay.” In other words, there are laws and consequences to guarantee that the mail gets to its destination on time, but nobody’s imposing consequences for delivering people safely to their destination, so the people just have to look out for themselves. That sounds worrying, but Trigget further explains that he can’t wait for people who just have to finish the story they’re telling at a stagecoach stop. The coach has to leave each stop at a specific time to make it to its destination on time for the sake of the mail, so the passengers need to make sure that they’re ready to go, or they’ll be left behind. It’s not much different from missing a bus, a train, or a plane today.

When Trigget says that they will reach Southerton at four o’clock, he means four o’clock in the morning. They set out in the evening, and this stagecoach travels all night. As they pass through the countryside and towns along the way, they notice that lights in houses start going out around 10 o’clock, the usual time for people in the countryside to go to bed, although the author notes that lights in the towns stay on for longer because people stay up later there.

Along the way, they stop at the post offices in various small towns and villages to sort the mail. The post offices are sometimes in buildings by themselves, but in some places, they’re located inside another business, like a store or a tavern. At each stop, they have to leave behind the mail for that particular area. At one point, they change horses on the coach, and Rainbow says that he might want a job like that someday, caring for horses. Each stop only takes a few minutes, but Trigget tries to keep things moving quickly so they can be at the next stop on time. He plans for an extra hour on his journey in case anything goes wrong, and they are about to need that extra time.

After the coach is moving again, Trigget suddenly realizes that the boy who harnessed the horses has accidentally left the reins on the right sides of the horses’ mouths unbuckled on the lead horses. It’s serious mistake because, when Trigget pulls on the reins, he’s pulling the lead horses off to the left instead of evenly on both sides, causing the entire team and coach to turn. When he tries to stop the horses from moving, he loses control of them, and they’re coming to a place where a dangerous turn could wreck the coach!

In desperation, Rainbow decides to try a dangerous stunt. He climbs out over the backs of the moving horses to reach the lead horses to fix the problem with the reins. At first, the horses are nervous with Rainbow climbing on them, but Rainbow is good with horses and manages to calm them. Unfortunately, he doesn’t manage to get the reins completely fixed before disaster strikes. They hit the turn that Trigget feared, and the coach overturns!

Fortunately, Rainbow manages to escape injury. He swings down from the horse he’s riding and manages to calm the horses down. The horses are uninjured, but the coach is on its side, and the passengers are in a panic! Trigget and Handie are also unhurt, and they begin helping the other passengers out of the overturned coach and assessing them for injuries. One of the young women who was in the coach is unconscious. The other passengers fear that she may be hurt very badly and will need a doctor, but Trigget thinks that she has only fainted from the shock. The axle-tree of the coach is broken, so they can’t merely right the coach and continue traveling. Trigget asks Rainbow to take one of the horses and ride back to the last stop and get some help and a wagon to pick up the mail and baggage from the coach. Trigget’s first concern, as he said before, is to keep the mail moving. Once someone comes to take the mail bags on, he turns his attention back to his passengers.

The unconscious girl revives, and she is not badly injured. When Rainbow returns with another wagon, they load all the luggage on it, and the entire party returns to the last tavern they passed, where they stay for the rest of the night. The owner’s wife, Mrs. Norton, gives the young women a room upstairs, but she doesn’t have enough unoccupied rooms for everyone. She suggests that Rainbow stay in the barn with the man who manages the horses, and Handie says that he’ll stay there with Rainbow, too. Mrs. Norton is grateful that they’re willing to take this lesser accommodation, and she gives them both sheets and blankets to use. The man who manages the horses, Hitover, offers his bed to Handie, and he says that Rainbow can use his assistant’s bed because the assistant, Jex, is the one who is currently taking the mail to its next stop. However, the boys decide that they would prefer to sleep on the hay with their sheets and blankets. Handie shows Rainbow how to shape the hay into a more comfortable bed, rolling up some to make pillows. (I thought that part was interesting because I’ve read about people sleeping on hay in other books, but I think this is the first story I’ve read that explains how to make an improvised bed in hay.) Then, they say their prayers and go to sleep.

Rainbow has a more difficult time going to sleep than Handie does, thinking about everything that’s happened and how strange it feels to be away from home. Both of the boys are becoming young men and venturing out into the world without their families for the first time, but in some ways, Rainbow’s position feels more precarious than Handie’s because he never knows how the people he meets might react to him, just because of his race. The book says:

Besides, the going away from home of a colored boy like Rainbow is a much more momentous event for him than such a change is for a white boy. A white boy, if he is of an amiable disposition and behaves well, even if he goes among entire strangers, soon makes plenty of friends. The world is prepared every where to welcome him, and to receive him kindly. But a boy like Rainbow feels that his fate is to be every where disliked and shunned. In every strange town that he enters he expects that the boys, instead of welcoming him as a new companion and playmate, will be ready to deride him, and to point at him, and to call him opprobrious names; so that, when he goes out into the world, there is no bright side of the picture to relieve the regret which he feels at leaving his home. He expects, wherever he goes, and however bright and beautiful may be the outward aspects of the novel scenes through which he may pass, that every thing human will look dark and scowling upon him, and that all who have loved him, or will love him, or care any thing about him, are left behind.

The one point of reassurance for Rainbow is Handie. Handie is kind to him, and he’s also Rainbow’s link to what’s safe and familiar to him. When he falls asleep, Rainbow dreams that he’s riding a wild horse. 

At one point during the night, Rainbow wakes up and sees Burkill sneaking around. Burkill hides a carpet bag under some hay, not seeing that Rainbow is awake and watching. Rainbow tells himself that he’ll have to mention it to Handie, and he goes back to sleep.

The next day, Handie goes to see about breakfast, and Rainbow gives Hitover some help with the horses. While Rainbow is helping with the horses, Burkill comes to the barn again, and he starts hassling Hitover about getting him a horse and wagon so he can get to Southerton faster. Hitover says that Burkill has been giving him a lot of trouble about that since the coach party arrived after the accident, but he keeps telling Burkill that he can’t help him. They only have one wagon, and Trigget will probably need it for handling his passengers and their baggage. When Trigget returns after getting the broken stage coach to a blacksmith, he says the same thing. Burkill tries to persuade him to forget about the other passengers because he’s willing to pay more, but Trigget says that he has a duty to all the passengers. Out of curiosity, Rainbow looks under the hay and sees that the carpet bag is still hidden there.

When Rainbow next speaks to Handie, Handie tells him that everyone’s bags and trunks will have to be searched because some things have been stolen. Handie’s pretty sure that he knows who will be most reluctant to have his bags searched, but he doesn’t say so aloud. (I think we all know at this point who the thief probably is.) While the search is being conducted, Rainbow quietly tells Trigget about Burkill’s hidden carpet bag. Trigget tells him not to say anything to anyone else yet. 

Instead, while Burkill is pressing him again about getting the wagon and leaving, Trigget says that he needs to get John Easterly and Handie to come to the barn with him first to talk about some hay he wants to buy. Burkill, worried about the possible discovery of the bag, goes with them without being invited. Trigget asks Rainbow to move some of the hay with a pitchfork, and Burkill tries to distract them from looking in the spot where the bag is hidden. When Rainbow uncovers the bag, Burkill admits that the bag is his and claims that he put it there to keep it from being lost. He tries to keep everyone from examining the bag, but Trigget says that, if he doesn’t show them what he has in the bag, they’ll all assume that he has the stolen goods, and they’ll fetch an officer to search the bag. For a moment, Burkill pretends that he’s lost the key to the bag, but Trigget finds it and opens the bag. Burkill does have John Easterly’s stolen watch in his bag, and he tries to claim that he just happened to find it and didn’t know who it belonged to, but nobody believes him. They fetch an officer, and Burkill is arrested. They can’t find the money that was taken from the young women on the coach, but everyone assumes that Burkill took that, too. Since the girls lost their money, Handie offers to lend the girls some money so they can continue their journey, and they accept.

Trigget says that he’s having the coach repaired, and any of the men (except for the arrested Burkill) who wants to wait for it can go with him that night. He is arranging for the girls to continue on immediately in the wagon, but if the men don’t want to wait for the coach, he will refund part of their coach fare, and they can make their own travel arrangements. Trigget says that they can continue to Southerton on foot, if they wish, and he’ll bring their baggage later, so Handie decides that’s what he and Rainbow will do. They’re about 20 miles away from Southerton at this point, and Handie says they can walk the distance and get there by five o’clock, maybe around seven o’clock in the evening, if they stop for a couple of hours on the way. That means that they will still get there faster than if they waited for the coach to be fixed. They remove a few things from their bags that they will need until Trigget can bring them their luggage in Southerton. Then, they set off on their way.

While they walk, they pass the place where the coach was wrecked. They look around to see if maybe the girls’ wallet with their money fell out somewhere. They don’t find it, and they consider going by the blacksmith’s shop to see if it’s still in the coach. The problem is that, when they come to a crossroads, they realize that Southerton is one way, and the blacksmith’s shop is another. They have to decide if they’re willing to go out of their way to visit the blacksmith and see if the girls’ wallet is in the coach. Handie doesn’t want to delay their journey too much because he doesn’t have much money. He gave what he could spare to the girls, and a delay in the journey would cause them to have to spend more money for food or accommodation. However, he feels like they ought to try looking for the purse anyway because he wants to feel like he did all he could for the unfortunate girls.

At the blacksmith’s shop, the blacksmith gives them permission to search the coach for the wallet. It doesn’t take them long to find it. When they do, Rainbow says that they ought to check if the money is there and maybe take what they need to pay themselves back what Handie lent to the girls, but Handie doesn’t think it’s right to look in the wallet without the girls’ permission. He thinks that it would be only right to deliver it to the girls intact. In fact, after he thinks about it, he decides that he should show it to the blacksmith, since the coach was in his custody, and that he will also seal it up for security. (The narrator says at this point that he’s not sure himself whether Handie is being truly right in this level of scrupulousness or just being overly particular. Rainbow thought this was going too far, but he didn’t want to say so. The narrator invites child readers who are unsure about the right thing to do in such a circumstance to discuss it with their parents or a trustworthy adult, which sounds like the advice that teachers typically gave us in school when I was a kid and anything came up on which they didn’t want to render an opinion or didn’t think it was their place to discuss.)

Handie shows the wallet to the blacksmith, and they discuss the proper way to handle it. The blacksmith says, in a way, he wishes that Handie hadn’t found the wallet because it does create an ethical quandary about which of them is the best person to handle it, since it doesn’t really belong to any of them, and he doesn’t want there to be any question about whether he might have taken any money from it himself, since it was in his possession. Handie suggests that they wrap the wallet up in paper and seal it, and he’ll write on the outside that they found it but didn’t open it and that they all sealed it up together. Then, the blacksmith can give it to Trigget when Trigget comes for the coach, and Trigget can deliver it to the girls. The blacksmith is satisfied with this arrangement.

After they’ve resolved that matter, Handie and Rainbow talk about how Trigget was wrong that Burkill stole the money, and Handie says, “And it shows us that we ought to be pretty careful how we judge and condemn people, even when we know that their characters are bad.” (I also took the lesson from it that a person like Burkill has made the kind of reputation for himself where nobody believes him on those rare occasions when he is telling the truth, so it’s also his fault when people don’t believe him. I mean, it’s hard to convincingly argue that you haven’t stolen something when people have already caught you with a different thing you just stole, lied about, and tried to conceal in the same 24 hour period, but that’s not where the story puts its emphasis.)

They continue on with their journey, and when they come to the next tavern, Handie decides to see if they will give them dinner in exchange for work instead of money, so he can save the money they still have. The tavern owner, Mr. Dorling, is a little “slack”, as one of his neighbors puts it. He’s not very on top of things, but his daughter, Margery, minds the business, and she can think of some things for Handie to fix around the place. Margery is very pleased with their help and considers that they have paid for their dinner many times over. Handie thinks that they probably still owe some money for dinner, so he asks Margery’s father what he thinks is fair. At first, it seems like Margery’s father still insists on them paying for most of the cost of their meals, which doesn’t seem fair, but then, they realize that they’ve misunderstood what he said. Mr. Dorling means that he will give them not only the promised meals but almost enough to buy two more meals for themselves. In other words, he’s the one who owes them more money, not the other way around. In fact, they’ve done such good work that Margery proposes that Handie and Rainbow stay the rest of the afternoon. There is more work to do, they can have their evening meals at the tavern, and Margery will also arrange for a wagon to take them to Southerton so they will arrive there at about the time they had planned. Handie accepts the offer, and they continue their work.

The boy who will be taking them to Southerton in a wagon, Tolie, says that he can drive them when he’s done bringing the cows in from the pasture, and they can go sooner, if Rainbow will help him finish the task. Rainbow and Tolie go out to the pasture together, and while they’re out there, they decide that they both want some lilies from the pond. Rainbow often helped younger children from his village get pond lilies and a couple of them have asked him to send some lilies from his journey, so he’s happy to help Tolie. When they collect the lilies, Tolie says he doesn’t see how Rainbow can send lilies back to his town without them wilting on the way. Rainbow does his best to get lilies with their roots intact, and he asks Handie if he can think of a way to send them home undamaged. Handie thinks about it, and he remembers that there’s an empty paint keg in the shed that the Dorlings probably don’t want anymore. He says they can ask the Dorlings if they can have it, and then, Trigget can pick up the lilies and carry them home when he passes this way again. Margery says it’s fine for them to have the paint keg, and she’ll make sure that Trigget picks up the lilies. Trigget is happy to do Rainbow the favor of delivering the lilies because Rainbow was so helpful during and after the coach accident.

Tolie is a little later in leaving with Handie and Rainbow than they originally agreed, and Handie talks to him about the importance of punctuality, telling him a little story about some boys trying for a job and how the one who planned ahead against accidents making him late was the one who got the job. They discuss the story a little, and then, Handie asks Tolie some questions about Southerton and what he knows about the Three Pines farm. Tolie says that Southerton is a small town but pretty nice. He is familiar with the Three Pines farm because boys in the area like to go fishing in a stream nearby. The Three Pines farm used to be very nice, but it has become run down. It was originally established by a man name Captain Stanfield, an early settler in the area. There really are three pine trees on the farm. Tolie says that Captain Stanfield deliberately left the three pine trees there when he cleared the land for planting, and there’s supposed to be a story about why he did that, but Tolie doesn’t know what the full story is.

Handie’s plan, on arriving in Southerton, is to get a room for himself and Rainbow at the local tavern. He only plans to stay at the tavern for a day or two, while he and Rainbow check out the farm, see what condition the buildings are in, and arrange a place for them to sleep there while they’re repairing the farm. Handie doesn’t expect to find furniture at the farm, so they stop at a farm on the way and buy some straw that they can use to make beds at the farm, if they can’t find anything else.

This volume of the story ends at this point, mentioning that Handie and Rainbow had other adventures in Southerton before they finally settle at the farm house and make beds for themselves from the straw they bought. The story promises that it will explain what happened in the next volume. It also explains that, when Trigget comes to bring them their luggage, he also brings them the girls’ wallet they found and turns it over to Handie to return to the girls, telling him to write to them about it. When he does, the girls tell him to take the money from the purse to pay himself back what he loaned them (so he might as well have done that in the first place). They say that he can mail the wallet to them, but instead, he arranges to send them the remaining money and purchases the wallet from them, with their permission. He finds a piece of poetry in the wallet along with the money and tries to ask the girls which of them actually owned the wallet, but they refuse to say. Handie keeps the poem as a keepsake.

Meanwhile, Burkill goes to trial for his theft of the watch, and Rainbow is called as a witness in court. We do not get to see the trial in the story, but we are told that Burkill is found guilty and sent to prison, and the rest of the story has to wait for the next installment in the series.

I liked this installment of the series better than the last one because it had more action to it! The last installment established the reasons for this journey and how Handie came to hire Rainbow as his assistant, but much of it focused on the money problems in the Level family and Handie’s negotiations with the lawyer handling their affairs. In this part of the series, we see Handie and Rainbow setting off on their journey by stage coach! We get to see them riding on top of a stage coach, a daring stunt by Rainbow to try to prevent an accident, and the aftermath of the accident when he isn’t successful. Everyone gives Rainbow credit for risking his neck to try to save the situation, and nobody regards it as his fault when the accident happened anyway. He didn’t do anything to cause it, and he was brave to try to save everyone. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries from the accident, so it’s exciting without anyone having to feel scared or too sad about the outcome. 

Then, we also have a theft among the stage coach travelers. It’s not much of a mystery who committed it because we have one very definite shady character in the group, and Rainbow sees that person doing something suspicious, which gives it all away. For a while, I was afraid that someone would blame Rainbow for the theft or that our suspicious character might try to claim that the bag he was hiding actually belonged to Rainbow. I half expected it because parts of this series focus on racial issues, so I could see why some characters might be tempted to try to use Rainbow as a scapegoat. Fortunately, that doesn’t happen. It might not have worked even if someone tried because everyone knows who owned which bags because they were loaded on the stage coach in front of everyone, and both Handie and the driver know Rainbow, but I was glad to avoid the stress of a false accusation. Instead, the other characters believe what Rainbow saw, and the real thief is caught with the stolen goods, and we are told that Rainbow is later called as a witness against him in court. There is a definite point where racism enters the story, specifically from the suspicious character, but I want to talk more about racial issues below.

Even the parts of the story that are more educational were pretty interesting. As I said, the author liked to describe parts of daily life and how things work for the education of his young readers, and this is very helpful to people in the 21st century as information about how people lived and worked in the 19th century. In this installment, we really get a look at Handie’s work skills for the first time when he does some work at a tavern to pay for their food. We see him mending a broken door, a window, and a leak in a roof, and before that, we also see him fixing the tavern owner’s tools because they haven’t been well-maintained and Handie’s tools are with the rest of his luggage, waiting to be taken to the next town. The details of Handie’s work are minor details in the narrative, but they’re interesting for people with a fascinating for DIY skills.

When you’re reading the parts about racism and the people who stand up for Rainbow or correct the way that other people talk about black people, I’d like to remind you again that this book was written in the late 1850s. This book is pre-Civil War, not just in its setting, but when it was actually created. It was written about 100 years before the Civil Rights Movement. The author of this book, Jacob Abbott, did not live to see the Civil Rights Movement and never heard the term “woke” in its 21st usage or about Black Lives Matter, with all the emotional baggage those carry.

However, like many 19th-century children’s authors, he was very concerned with children’s education. He specifically wrote children’s books for educational purposes, not just pure entertainment. In his books, he explains to children how the world works around from, from the details about travel and mail delivery to the notes about when people habitually go to bed in the countryside vs. the towns to the ways people look at black people, speak about them, and treat them. These things are all parts of the world his child audiences were growing up in, and he wrote about them both to explain what children were seeing around themselves and also to teach the children some lessons about how he and others wanted them to behave and respond to situations they might encounter. Along with the lessons about the importance of hard work, money management, and prudent living (the main focus of the first installment in this series), there are lessons about the polite ways to address black people, how to treat them, and how to respond to someone who isn’t speaking or behaving well. The language that the author uses as polite racial terms isn’t what we would expect in the 21st century, as I explained above, because he didn’t see some of the cultural shifts that inspired the change in the terms that people use. For his time, “colored” and “Negro” were among the more polite words, and the generic “black” we use today was discouraged. However, I think his attitude that it’s best to call people what they want to be called or what they call themselves is generally in keeping with modern principles.

One of the reasons why I want to emphasize that this story, and its author, are from the 1850s, pre-Civil War, is to make sure that readers keep historical events and attitudes in perspective and in their proper order. People like Jacob Abbott existed before the Civil War. He wasn’t the only one who believed in principles of treating other people, including people of different races, with politeness and consideration. There were always people like that. They may not have always said it or shown it in precisely the same way, but there were people with similar attitudes and similar principles in Abbott’s time and even before that. They were there every step of the way, and it matters that they were because none of what happened next would have happened without them, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without their influence behind us. 

When I said that his principles are generally in keeping with modern principles, I’m not saying that Abbott was a man ahead of his time. The point that I’m really trying to make was that he was very much a man of his time. The Civil War was looming, tensions about slavery and treatment of black people had been building for some time, the country was sharply fractured, it was discussed openly, hostilities had already taken place, and people could see the war coming. This was the atmosphere in which Abbott was writing for children, and that’s why I find it intriguing that he was writing about racial issues. He is writing not to prepare the children for the coming war but for the little, everyday battles of their lives, for the times when they will live and work alongside people of different races and must learn to get along together. It matters because the man who fusses about where the black boy will sit on the stage coach aren’t that much different from the 1950s/1960s issues about who would sit where on a bus. When the stage coach driver says that Rainbow has paid his fare and can sit where he wants, he’s not that much different from people who defied segregation in restaurants by saying that one paying customer’s money is just as green as another’s, and that’s the color that matters. Different day, but same issues. 

The people who stood up against segregation and racism were partly fueled by other people who came before them, people like Abbott and books and magazines with themes like the ones in this story. The children who read this story were children during the Civil War. Their children lived during the second half of the 19th century, through increasing westward expansion and industrialization. Their grandchildren lived through the Jim Crow eras and segregated schools, seeing the popularity of Birth of a Nation in 1915 and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1910s and 1920s. Their great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren would have been alive around the time of the Civil Rights Movement and the end of segregation, but what may have helped determine how they felt about all of these issues and how they felt about them in their daily lives was how their families felt about these things for all the generations leading up to those points when situations came to a head and whether they passed on those principles, generation after generation. Those children who read stories like this, absorbed the lessons, and believed in the principles probably also passed on those attitudes, even if they didn’t give their kids the same books to read. 

The Rainbow and Lucky Series isn’t well-known today, but I think it’s just one of those little pieces of the bigger puzzle. It’s the little things that add up to bigger ones later on. Even if later generations of the family didn’t read the same books, they might have been told by parents and grandparents not to call people impolite names or things they don’t like to be called. They might have been taught that people who are behaving themselves and paying good money for services should receive good service in return, no matter what they look like. There were white people who were against slavery long before the Civil War, there were white people who were supportive of the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century, and there are still people in the 21st century who are determined to do what they can to help people suffering from forms of discrimination. Stories come and go, but the lessons we learn along the way and see our families and friends acting out in small, daily ways can stay not just for one lifetime, but the ones that follow. Major changes don’t happen overnight, and it can take generations for them to build, but it’s all the steps and all the people along the way who get us there and keep us moving forward. What I’d like people to remember is that this children’s series is one of those steps. You may not remember every step on the staircase as you go up, but each one gets you a little further up than you were before.

Stories of Rainbow and Lucky

I’ve been wanting to cover this series for some time. It’s an unusual series from the mid-19th century, written on the eve of the American Civil War, by a white author with a young black hero. Rainbow is a teenage black boy who, in this first installment of the series, is hired by a young carpenter, who is only a few years older than he is, to help him with a job in another town. The entire series is really one long story, like a mini-series, and each book is an installment in the story. 

This first book focuses mostly on the young, white carpenter Handie Level, why he needs to take this job in another town, and why he decides to hire Rainbow to come with him. The rest of the series follows the two young men, particularly Rainbow, through their adventures, learning life lessons, even dealing with difficult topics like racism. (Lucky is a horse, and Lucky enters the story later.) It’s unusual for this time period for black people to be the heroes of books and for topics like racism to be discussed directly. It’s also important to point out that our black hero is not a slave, he is not enslaved at any point in the series, and the series has a happy ending for him. People don’t always treat him right, but he does have friends and allies, and he manages to deal with the adversity he faces and builds a future for himself.

I want to explain a little more about the background of this book, but it helps to know a couple of things before you begin. First, the author was a minister who had written other books and series for children, Jacob Abbott. He had a strong interest in human nature and the details of everyday life, so his books are interesting for students of history. He explains some of the details of 19th century life that other people of his time might have taken for granted, and he also liked to explain the reasons why his characters behave as they do in the stories, exploring their personalities and motivations. Second, as part of the author’s character studies and also just for the fun of it, he made many of his character names puns that offer hints to the characters’ roles or personalities, so keep an eye out for that when new characters are introduced. Some of these pun name or nicknames are obvious, but others require a little explanation. Rainbow’s employer, Handie Level, is a level-headed carpenter who’s good with his hands, so the meaning of his name is pretty straight-forward. “Rainbow” is the nickname of our black hero, not his real name. We are never told what his real name is. He apparently has one, but even the author/narrator of the story admits that he’s not sure what it is. He is nicknamed “Rainbow” because he is “colored”, and that may require a little explanation.

During the course of the books, the author explains that “colored” was one of the more polite words used for African Americans during the mid-19th century. The author wanted to make his stories educational for children of his time, so there are points when characters discuss how to address African Americans politely, explaining which terms are acceptable and which are not acceptable. The basic rule that the author establishes of not referring to anybody by a name you think they wouldn’t want to be called still holds true today, no matter who you’re talking about. It’s important to consider other people’s feelings in how you describe them, and it’s good to teach children to notice and care about other people’s feelings. However, some of the polite racial terms the author recommends in the books sound out-of-date to people today and might leave modern readers wondering if they really are polite. The answer to the question is that they were considered polite at the time the book was written, but since then, some of the conventions regarding polite racial terms have changed.

A major shift in the terms used took place during the Civil Rights Movement, around 100 years after this series was written. People were intentionally trying to distance themselves from the emotional baggage associated with the racial terms that had been used previously, so instead of using “Negro” and “colored”, they began using “African American” as the formal term and “black” as the generic, informal term. This change in terms was meant to help create a sense of a fresh start at a time when cultural attitudes were changing. Because this book was written in the 19th century, the terms they use as the polite terms are the ones that were formerly used as the polite terms before that cultural shift. Even though most people wouldn’t speak like that anymore, you can still see the use of these terms occasionally, particularly in the names of organizations that were created prior to the shift in racial terms, like the United Negro College Fund (UNCF, founded 1944) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP, founded 1909). So, yes, “Rainbow” is a pun nickname because he is “colored” in the sense of the racial term. Apparently, the author was amused that the term made it sound like he was colorful, like a rainbow, although I think he is also a colorful personality.

The way a person speaks does offer hints to their background and character. Jacob Abbott had a fascination for analyzing the details of human behavior and the ways other people react to the other people around them them. He was aware of what was considered polite in his time and how the words people use affect other people. In these stories, he deliberately offers teachable moments to show child readers the differences between people who behave politely and considerately and the people who do not. As you go through the stories, feel free to study the characters and their behavior. The author meant for people to notice who these people are and why they do the things they do.

This book is easily available to read online in your browser through NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN CHILDREN & WHAT THEY READ, I’m going to do a detailed summary below. If you’d rather read it yourself before you read my review, you can go ahead, but some people might want to know in detail what they’d be getting into. There’s nothing here that I think would be racially offensive because it’s quite a gentle, sympathetic story. However, I can immediately see a couple of reasons why this book and its series hasn’t become a better-known children’s classic. 

I wasn’t kidding when I said that the author goes into detail about some aspects of daily life and society in the 19th century. This story and its series, like others by the author, was meant to be education, so there’s a lot of teaching going on, both in the form of moral advice and general life lessons and in the specifics about how to handle money and negotiate business arrangements. It could still be interesting for someone studying daily life and social attitudes in the 19th century, but 21st century children might find it a bit dull. There’s more explanation than there is action and adventure, although I wasn’t bored while reading it, and there are a few interludes with character backstories, stories that the characters tell each other, and a strange dream Handie has. In the middle of the book, there’s kind of a touching story about a little boy and his widowed mother that I enjoyed, and it explains some of the reasons why the characters are in the situation they’re in.

Handie and Rainbow are the two main characters of the series, although most of this book focuses on Handie and his family. Their money troubles, an inheritance that Handie receives, and the arrangements that he makes on behalf of his family create the situation that causes Handie to hire Rainbow to help him with some work, which requires traveling to another town to manage his inheritance. The entire series tells the story of why they’re doing this, what happens to them on the journey to this new town, what they find there, and what it means for their futures, but it’s told in five installments. There are some spoilers at the end of this story to future stories in the series, which ruins some of the suspense, but this isn’t really meant as a suspense story. It’s a story about a couple of promising boys in the teenage years and what they do that sets them up for their future. One of them just happens to be black, and that’s something that figures more in the later stories in the series. This particular book has a few moments when the characters discuss race and the difficulties and discrimination that black people encounter in life, but it’s not a major focus. There is going to be outright racism in the stories, but this book mostly sets up the backstory of the characters and their situation.

Handie Level (his first name is short for Handerson, we are later told) is a poor boy who is reluctant to go to school because his clothes are so poor, but yet, he is eager to learn. Our narrator, an unnamed neighbor of the Level family, describes how Mr. Level has difficulty earning much money because he is not very strong and is physically deformed. He manages to earn sufficient money to keep himself, his wife, and their son in a basic way as a kind of repair man. He is very good at fixing things in his little workshop. However, he isn’t very good at managing the little money he has, and his wife isn’t very attentive about maintaining the house or the family’s clothes, making them look more poor than they actually are. It’s true that they don’t have much, but they could do better if they managed their resources better. It’s partly because they feel sorry for their poor state and not very hopeful about it improving that keeps them from striving to do better. In reality, they’re not that much worse off than their neighbors, but this feeling that they are is what keeps Handie from going to school and letting others see his poor state. Since he has not been to school so far and can’t read, Handie worries that he would be embarrassingly behind the other children if he tried to go.

One day, the kind neighbor/narrator sees Handie trying to teach himself to read. Wanting to help the boy, the kind neighbor gives him a book that will help him learn to read better than what he was trying to use. (The author of the story is probably inserting himself here as the friendly neighbor, especially because he also wrote other books about children’s education, children’s readers, and series of simple stories aimed at teaching children to read.) Handie is grateful and begins making more progress in his learning.

Handie also becomes more helpful to his parents as he grows older and takes an interest in learning to mend his own clothes. When his mother helps him to mend his clothes, he looks much better, and Handie praises his sewing ability. His mother is pleased at the praise, and we learn that her husband has been more in the habit of criticizing her efforts at everything rather than praising her. This constant criticism and lack of encouragement is another reason why she has not been trying harder to maintain the household and the appearances of her family. Handie’s praise encourages his mother, and with Handie’s help, she begins making more effort around the house and doing more mending. With his clothes looking nicer and his new ability to read, Handie feels more comfortable going to school, and he begins progressing in life.

As Handie grows up, he becomes more and more helpful to his parents, both around the house and in his father’s repair business. He begins taking jobs of his own and bringing in a little money. He helps his family improve their circumstances. Then, a new opportunity comes along. The man at the mill says that if Handie or his father can buy a horse and wagon, he would pay them good money to haul lumber for him. It’s a tempting offer, and it could be a job that Handie’s father could do that would pay him more than what he’s doing now, but Handie doesn’t know where they would get the money for the horse and wagon for either of them to use. Handie has been good about saving money from what he earns, but the amount they would need is a large sum.

When Handie finally talks to his father about the job offer, Mr. Level is upset. He has been very worried lately, and he reveals to Handie the reason why. Even though they own their house, there is a mortgage on it, and the mortgage holder (a lawyer in the village) is now insisting that the Levels pay him the full sum or the family will be turned out. Mr. Level doesn’t know where he will get the money to pay the full amount, and he doesn’t know where they can possibly live if they have to leave. Handie and his mother had no idea that Mr. Level had taken out a mortgage on the house, and they are distressed about the looming threat of eviction. The amount of money they would need to save their house is about the same as what it would take to buy a horse and wagon.

While the Levels are debating about what they can do, the story flashes back a few years to a little boy named Solomon Roundly and the reason why Mr. Level is in such financial trouble. Solomon belongs to an industrious but poor family on the other side of the village from the Level family. The family is saving up to buy their own farm when Solomon’s father suddenly dies of an illness. The neighbors do their best to comfort Mrs. Roundly and young Solomon. Among the neighbors, there is a black lady and her 12-year-old son, who sometimes looks after young Solomon and plays with him or takes him fishing. (The book uses the term “colored” to describe the black boy and his mother because that was one of the more polite terms at the time. There is a point later in the series where the narrator specifically explains this.) The narrator says that he doesn’t remember the black boy’s real name because everyone has called him Rainbow for as long as anyone can remember, and they’re not even very certain whether he ever had another name.

One day, another local boy, called Josey Cameron, is accidentally injured when he tries to throw a stone into an apple tree to knock down an apple, and the stone comes back at him and hits him just above his eye. The boy cries with fright and pain, and Mrs. Roundly takes him inside and tends to the wound. Mrs. Roundly asks young Solomon to fetch Rainbow and see if Rainbow can take the injured boy home in his cart. Rainbow agrees to take Josey home, and Mrs. Roundly tells him to be sure to drop the boy off close to his house but not right in front of it and to let him walk the rest of the way so that his mother will see that he is not hurt too badly. If Mrs. Cameron sees them drop off her son right at the door, she might panic, thinking that he couldn’t walk at all. The reason why this little incident matters is that it happens shortly before Mr. Roundly dies, and it starts off a chain of events which explains Mr. Level’s mortgage.

Mr. Cameron is so grateful for Mrs. Roundly tending to his son’s wound and arranging for his ride home that he arranges a little present for the Roundly family. He is a daguerreotypist, meaning that he makes daguerreotypes, which is an early form of photography. Basically, he has a photography studio. He has Mr. Roundly pose for a daguerreotype as a reward to his family for their help. Mrs. Roundly is happy to see the picture of her husband when they receive it, but later, after her husband’s death, she finds it a painful reminder of the loss. Young Solomon, seeing his mother crying over the daguerreotype of his father, decides that if it makes her so unhappy to see it, maybe he should get rid of it.

Solomon takes the daguerreotype and goes to see Rainbow and asks him for a ride into the village. Rainbow is happy to give him a ride, but he asks him why he wants to go there. Solomon says he’s going there “on business”, which makes Rainbow laugh because Solomon is so little. Yet, Solomon insists that’s the case and tells Rainbow he’ll see it’s true when they get there. 

On the way, Solomon insists that Rainbow tell him a story. Rainbow tells him the only one that he knows, a story about a man who killed a bear. (I find hunting stories rather gruesome, although I suppose 19th century children might have found this interlude thrilling.) Rainbow knows this story because his mother read it in an almanac once. Solomon asks Rainbow if he can read. Rainbow says he can’t read very well. His mother is too busy working to teach him, and it’s hard to learn on his own. He wishes he could go to school, but he says that the local people don’t like him to go. The other boys don’t want to sit near him, and people make trouble for him. Solomon wishes he could do something that would help, but he can’t think of anything.

In the village, Solomon asks Rainbow to take him to Mr. Cameron’s. When they get there, Solomon asks Mr. Cameron to make a daguerreotype of him, just like he did with his father and to replace his father’s daguerreotype in its case with his instead. Mr. Cameron is surprised at the request, especially since Solomon admits that his mother didn’t send him and he wants the picture for free, but he agrees to do it as a favor to the little boy. When Mr. Cameron makes the daguerreotype, Rainbow is standing behind Solomon, and he ends up in the picture as well. When Solomon sees it, he says that he didn’t mean Rainbow to be in the picture with him, but Mr. Cameron says that he doesn’t see a problem with it. In fact, he thinks that Rainbow’s presence really improves the picture and makes it “prettier.” Rainbow is surprised and flattered that Mr. Cameron, as a man of artistic sensibilities, thinks his face could make a picture more beautiful, and Solomon decides that the picture will serve his purpose as well with Rainbow in it. 

When he gets home, Solomon puts his new daguerreotype in the place where his mother kept his father’s picture, and he puts his father’s picture away for safe-keeping. In the morning, his mother asks him about the new daguerreotype, and Solomon explains what he did. He says that he did it so that his mother would think of him now, and not his father, so she would be less sad. His mother agrees that’s a good thing to do, and she says that she doesn’t mind having Rainbow in the picture, either, because Rainbow has been so kind to Solomon.

Taking her son’s words to heart, Mrs. Roundly decides that she needs to start thinking of her son more and planning for the future again. She has some money that her husband left her, so she decides to see the lawyer in the village, Mr. James, about investing it on her son’s behalf, so her son will be able to buy a farm when he is grown. Mr. James is the same lawyer who holds the mortgage on the Levels’ property, and the money that Mr. Level borrowed from Mr. James is the money that Mrs. Roundly invested with him. Mr. Level was in debt at the time, and he promised to repay the loan with interest, using his house as collateral for the loan. The money that Mr. Level must repay is being managed by Mr. James, but it’s actually for young Solomon Roundly and his mother. 

Mr. Level is not good at managing his money, he has been careless about making his payments on time, and because he didn’t tell Handie or his mother about it, there was no one else to remind him or make sure that he repaid the money he borrowed. Mr. James has already extended the loan and given Mr. Level chances to make payments, and Mr. Level hasn’t done it. Mr. James can’t in good conscience allow Mr. Level to not repay a widow and a fatherless boy the money he owes them because he knows they really need it. That’s why he’s insisting on payment now or he’ll take the house.

When we return to the present after the flashback that explains the nature of the problem, Handie decides that the only thing to do is to see Mr. James himself and try to negotiate with him on behalf of his father and family. On his way, he meets Captain Early, who offers him a ride. Handie accepts and decides to ask Captain Early for advice about debts and mortgages. Because his father doesn’t understand much about money matters, Handie also doesn’t really understand mortgages or what the family’s options are. 

Captain Early says that if the property that’s mortgaged is worth more than the current mortgage, it could be possible to take out a second mortgage from a different person and use it to pay off the first one, thus buying some time to fully repay the debt. Handie has some misgivings about this approach. Captain Early doesn’t think it would be hard to find another investor who would be willing to lend money in the hopes of earning interest on it, but Handie now knows that his father isn’t good at paying his debts or even the interest on them. Still, it’s the only sensible solution that anyone has proposed so far, so he decides to discuss the possibility with Mr. James.

When Handie goes to see Mr. James, they discuss the situation. Handie explains that he didn’t understand the state of his father’s finances before or he would have helped his father pay the debt, and Mr. James explains why he’s reluctant to allow them more time to pay. The reason why the matter is so pressing is that Mrs. Roundly and her son are living in a rented house, and the man who owns it is in need of money and wants to sell the property. If Mrs. Roundly gets her money back, she could buy the home herself, and she and her son could continue to live there. If she doesn’t, she will have to worry about where she and her son will live. To let the Levels continue living in their home while not repaying the debt would result in the Roundlys being evicted, and that would hardly be fair, since it was really their money in the beginning.

Handie agrees that it would be unjust to not repay the debt to the Roundlys and put their situation in danger, and he promises to try to work things out so he and his father can repay the money. Mr. James appreciates Handie’s practicality and understanding, and he says that it’s too bad that Handie is only 19 years old. If he was 21, he would be a legal adult, and he would be willing to invest in Handie himself to repay Handie’s father’s debt. The only reason why he can’t do it now is that, until Handie is a legal adult, his signature on any agreement wouldn’t be legally binding. Also, technically, under the law, Handie’s time and money don’t belong to him but to his father. Even if his father would allow him to have time and money to himself, everything that belongs to Handie, and even Handie himself, legally belongs to his father until he’s a legal adult. 

As for what Captain Early said about taking out another mortgage or loan, even if Handie tried to arrange such a thing, any loan made to him would really, legally, be another loan to his father. Even if Handie gave his father the money to settle his debt or any other loan, there would be no guarantee that his father would actually use the money for that purpose. Legally, he can do what he wants with any money Handie gives him, even if Handie is the one who earned it, and even if he just wastes it instead of settling his debts. The truth is that Mr. James has already approached potential investors about making another loan to Mr. Level, but nobody wants to loan him money. Mr. Level has been complaining openly to people in the village about how unfair it is that he’s going to lose his house because he hasn’t repaid his loan. By doing all that complaining, he’s publicly outed himself as a bad debtor, and while people feel sorry for him, nobody wants to trust him with their money.

The situation looks hopeless to Handie. All he can think of is that his family will have to sell their house and move somewhere else. Because they can get more money from the sale of the house than they need to cover the debt, they could use that money to move somewhere else. Mr. James says that whoever buys the house might lease it back to them so they can continue to live there. They would just be paying rent to continue living in the house rather than paying the mortgage. It’s not a great solution, but it’s the only one open to them, and they will be left with some money from it. Handie explains the plan to his parents and to Mrs. Roundly, and they all agree to it.

It will take a couple of months to settle the sale of the house, so Handie tells his father that they must try to earn as much money as they can during that time. Mr. Level says that there’s no way they can earn enough to stop the sale of the house in that time, but Handie says that it doesn’t matter. Whatever money they can earn will help in setting them up with a place to live and improving their financial situation. Thinking again about the offer of a job delivering lumber, Handie decides that, rather than trying to buy a horse and wagon, maybe he could rent one. He does so, his father begins delivering lumber, and he and his father begin saving up money and paying down the debt.

Then, Mr. James sends Handie a message to come see him. Mr. James has received word that Handie’s uncle has died and left him a small farm called Three Pines. Because his uncle left the farm to Handie and not to his father, Mr. James is to hold it in trust for him until he is 22. (This is one year past the age of adulthood, but this is what his uncle specified.) There is money to go with the property, and as the executor of the estate, Mr. James is directed to use the money to fix up the property and rent it out to a tenant on Handie’s behalf until Handie is old enough to have it. The bequest would be helpful to Handie if he could use it immediately to pay his father’s debt, but there is still the issue that Handie is underage. While Mr. James can rent out the property and use the money on Handie’s behalf, it would be against the terms of the will to use the money to pay Handie’s father’s debts. While helping his father would indirectly help Handie, that’s not quite good enough to satisfy the terms of the uncle’s will.

What Mr. James suggests is that they follow the terms of the will that require him to use the money from the estate to hire someone to fix up the property, and to that end, he will hire Handie to do the work and pay him for it. It seems odd to be hired and paid to work on a house that’s technically his, but it’s a logical solution to the problem. Because of the lawyer’s strict interpretation of the will and his role in executing it, he doesn’t think it would be appropriate to give Handie an advance on his work so he can settle the debt right away, insisting that Handie must do the work before getting any money. Handie thinks he’s being too strict, which is not really in his best interests at the moment, but he doesn’t see how he can argue. The proposition that Mr. James makes for him would still allow him to earn more money than he is currently earning.

When he tells his parents about the bequest and Mr. James’s proposition, they are happy that Handie’s uncle left him something but disappointed that Mr. James is unwilling to use the situation to help them more immediately. Handie himself thinks that Mr. James should have made a little exception to the rules to give him an advance on the money, although he has a dream that night that gives him a different perspective. In his dream, a fairy argues with a clock, telling it that it would do some good for it to go a little faster sometimes and a little slower at others, according to people’s needs. The clock says that the trouble is that, if he speeds up for one person, he might go too fast for another person’s needs, and if he slows down too much, it might cause trouble for someone who needs time to go faster. Because changing the flow of time can hurt one person at the same time as it helps another, it’s better for him to just keep the correct time. 

When he wakes up, Handie thinks about his weird dream and realizes that Mr. James is like the clock because he has to go strictly according to the rules, stable and predictable, to keep the situation steady for everyone. Sometimes, he might be tempted to do someone a favor by tilting the balance for them, but that can throw off other people who are also depending on him to follow the rules. Handie also considers the purpose behind his uncle’s will. His uncle and his father didn’t get along well, and his uncle was aware that his father was terrible at handling money. Handie himself has now become acquainted with his father’s lack of money sense and how it affects the rest of the family. He realizes that his uncle left his farm to Handie because he had heard that Handie was a practical boy and a good worker and would be more likely to take care of it. Therefore, he skipped over Handie’s father and left the farm directly to Handie, to be held in trust for him until he was a full adult to make sure that Handie’s father couldn’t use it for his own purposes or that Handie wouldn’t sacrifice something that would make a real difference to his future in his efforts to help his father. His uncle was planning for the long term, not the short term, something which Handie’s father never does but which Handie will have to learn to do if he wants a better future. Mr. James understands this thinking as well as Handie does, and that’s why he’s so adamant that they follow the terms of the will exactly.

When Handie speaks to Mr. James again, Mr. James reminds him that his father has a legal right to Handie’s time and anything that he earns through the use of his time. Time is a valuable resource, and Handie’s father owns his as a piece of property until Handie turns 21 years old. (In the book, Mr. James says, “You see the law requires that children should do something to reimburse to their parents the expense which they have caused them in bringing them up. … . They are required to remain a certain number of years to assist their fathers and mothers by working for them or with them. The time when they are finally free is when they are twenty-one years old.” This isn’t how society or the law would look at it in modern times, but I’ll have more to say about that later.) What Mr. James proposes to Handie is that he literally buy Handie’s time from his father, the remaining 2 years until Handie is 21 years old, for enough money to pay off the mortgage and give him plenty of extra money. If he does that, Handie will be working for Mr. James instead of his father for the next two years, and whatever he does or whatever he earns in that time would be for Mr. James. Handie agrees to this proposal because it would take care of his father’s money troubles. 

However, Mr. James improves the offer by saying that Handie has the ability to buy his own time, in which case he will be working for himself, owning his own time and his own earnings. He has spoken to a gentleman in the village who is willing to establish a loan for Handie, which he can use to buy his time from his father. As long as Handie stays healthy and continues working during the next two years, he will have more than enough money to repay that loan. Handie asks what happens if he gets sick or dies. Mr. James says this arrangement will require him to take out life insurance as security, to repay the loan in case something happens to him. The farm Handie has waiting for him can also be security for the loan in case Handie is sick or injured, and Mr. James will also endorse the note, meaning that he will pay the debt if Handie is unable to do it. It’s suitable for Mr. James to do that as the trustee for Handie’s inheritance and more legally-binding because Handie is still a minor.

Handie explains this new proposal to his parents, and they all agree to it. Handie’s mother is worried that this arrangement will involve Handie leaving home, and she doesn’t know what they’ll do with out him, but Handie says it’s necessary for him to go to the farm he’s inherited and begin fixing it up. It will bring in more money in the long run, and he will come home to his parents when everything is order and the farm is ready to lease to a tenant until Handie is 21. When they accept the proposal, Mr. Level is able to pay off his mortgage and save his ownership of his house, and he has enough money left over to buy his own horse and wagon to use in his new delivery job. With the family’s fortunes looking much better, Handie prepares to go to farm and begin his work there.

Hiring Rainbow

So far, the story has mostly focused on Handie and his family, and we haven’t seen much of Rainbow since he was helping young Solomon, but this is a small village, and Handie does know who Rainbow is. This is the part of the story that establishes the relationship between Handie and Rainbow and how Handie decides to hire Rainbow to help him with the work on his new farm.

As Handie prepares to go to the farm, which is near another town, Mr. James talks to him about the arrangements he’s made to provide Handie with money to pay him the wages for working for his own estate and also to allow him to buy whatever supplies and hardware he will need for repairs around the farm. Because Mr. James won’t be there to oversee things directly, he’s made arrangements to send money to Handie through another lawyer who lives near the farm. 

Handie is young, but he’s had experience as a carpenter. He can handle most of the work himself, but carpenters frequently need assistants to act as an extra pair of hands, helping them by holding boards in place or handing them tools as needed. Mr. James says that it would be appropriate for him to hire an assistant to help him, and he will provide money from the estate for that purpose. Since Handie doesn’t know anyone in this new town and wouldn’t know who to hire there, he decides that it would be better to bring an assistant with him from his village. He chooses Rainbow because, even though Rainbow is only 14 years old at this point, he’s big and strong for his age and is a good worker. He hasn’t had any training in carpentry at this point, but he doesn’t really need any experience to be an assistant. Rainbow is good at following instructions and is eager to do a good job and please people, and that’s more important.

Before he asks Rainbow if he wants the job, Handie tells Mr. James what he’s thinking to see if he thinks it’s a good idea. Mr. James says that, before he talks to Rainbow, he needs to decide how much money he would be willing to pay Rainbow out of the estate and what his accommodations would be while they’re in the other town. Handie proposes what he thinks would be a decent wage for an assistant and says that he will pay for Rainbow’s room and board. They will have to board somewhere in town until the farm is suitable for them to live in. Mr. James says that may be difficult because not every boarding house would be willing to have a “colored” tenant. Tenants in boarding houses all eat together at the same dining table, and not everyone will want to see at the same table as a black person. (This is just like Rainbow said that the other boys at school wouldn’t want to sit with him and would make trouble.) Handie is confident that he can find a place for them to board anyway, so Mr. James says that the plan sounds fine to him, as along as Rainbow agrees to it and Rainbow’s mother approves.

Handie goes to Rainbow’s house, but Rainbow’s mother says that he isn’t home because he’s working in Mrs. Roundly’s garden. Deciding that he should offer the job directly to Rainbow first before talking to his mother, Handie goes to find Rainbow.

Rainbow is working with young Solomon in the garden, and when they stop to rest, Rainbow says that he has a new story to tell, besides his usual bear one. A man read it to him recently out of a newspaper. It’s about a thief who was caught trying to steal money from a miser, and there’s an interlude in the main story where Rainbow tells this story. (Actually, it’s more like the thief was trying to get the miser’s money through extortion because he writes the miser a threatening note, demanding that he leave a sack of money in a particular place.) The miser’s sons set a trap for the thief and catch him.

As Rainbow finishes the story, Handie comes along and explains his job offer to Rainbow. It would require the two of them living in another town about 30 or 40 miles away for about 2 or 3 months. Feeling like he should tell Rainbow the hardest parts of the job, he says that the work will be physically rough, and he’s not sure exactly where they will be staying or what the “fare” (food) will be like, but he promises that, if Rainbow comes with him, he will pay him and that Rainbow will eat as well as he does himself. The physically hard parts of the job don’t sound appealing, but like most boys his age, Rainbow is adventurous, and the idea of going to another town, exact destination unknown, sounds exciting. Young Solomon thinks it sounds exciting, too, and he says he wants to go along. Solomon tries to prove to Handie how much he can lift, and Handie says that’s pretty impressive, and he would take him, if he could.

Turning serious, Handie asks Rainbow what he really thinks of the job offer. Rainbow says that he likes the idea, but he’s not sure what his mother will think and if she will be all right at home without him. Handie says that Rainbow can talk it over with his mother, and Rainbow persuades him to come along to see her and explain the job himself. At first, Handie is worried about the objections that Rainbow’s mother, Rose, might make, but actually, Rose is a sensible woman and sees that this is a good job offer for her son. She will miss him while he’s gone, but she doesn’t want him to miss out on this opportunity because of that. Since they’ve all agreed that Rainbow will have the job as Handie’s assistant, Handie and Rainbow begin their packing and preparations for the journey to Handie’s farm.

Even though Rainbow’s latest new story was one told to him by someone else, we are told at this point that Rainbow has made progress in learning to read and is now doing well enough at it to find it enjoyable rather than a chore. He is now able to read from the New Testament. His mother laments that he can’t write as well as he can read. She hasn’t been able to teach him more because she’s not that good at writing herself. Because Rainbow can’t write very well, he won’t be able to write letters to her while he’s away. Rainbow says that Handie could help him with that, and his mother tells him that, while Handie is his employer, Rainbow should call him Mr. Level. Handie is almost a grown man, and he is acting as grown man, doing professional work and being Rainbow’s employer and supervisor. (The book uses the term “master”, but they don’t mean it in the slave sense. This story was written and published before the Civil War, and slavery is legal during this period, but Rainbow is a free person, who is being employed at his own consent and paid a salary. The term “master in this case is more in the sense of a supervisor, someone who will be directing Rainbow’s work and overseeing the results.) Rose tells Rainbow that, if he has any problems on this job or if he does anything that causes a problem, he needs to be honest and tell Mr. Level (Handie) about it. If Handie knows what the problems are, he can help fix them, and hiding them would only make them worse. She has a little rhyme about it:

“Wrong declared
is half repaired;
while wrong concealed
is never healed.”

She also tells him that if anyone in this new town tries to give him a hard time or tease him because he is “colored”, he shouldn’t mind them. Rainbow says that’s very hard sometimes. Rose says that she understands but that fighting people wouldn’t do any good. He is likely to be outnumbered (that’s literally what it means to be a “minority”), so it’s better to use patience and show as little reaction as possible. They’re more likely to stop their teasing if he doesn’t give them the reaction they’re trying to provoke. Rose uses some local dogs as an example, pointing out how each of them responds to teasing. The one that just responds to teasing with a look of contempt doesn’t get teased as much. Rainbow points out that the dog who doesn’t react could probably head off further teasing if he put a scare into the teaser, but Rose says that only works if someone is big enough to put a scare to a teaser without actually hurting him and if the bully doesn’t have a bunch of confederates backing him up.

She further reminds Rainbow that the Gospel says, “that we must study to show kindness to those that do not show kindness to us.” She says that, while he’s away, she wants him to continue reading the New Testament and saying his prayers. She also makes a point that she wants him to think about the meaning of what he’s reading and have it in his mind that he will follow it in his life. She hopes that perhaps, during his time with Handie, Rainbow will improve his reading and writing ability and that Handie will help him. Before Rainbow leaves the village, he goes around to say goodbye to some friends and neighbors, and one of them gives him an inkstand and pens so he can write.

This installment of the series ends with Handie and Rainbow leaving on their journey to the new town, Southerton. We are told that, “Handie and Rainbow had a very pleasant ride, but they met with an accident on the road which led to a singular series of adventures. They, however, at last arrived at Southerton in safety, and spent two months there in a very agreeable and profitable manner.” This is kind of a spoiler for the next book in the series, which is all about their adventures on their journey. We know that they eventually arrive safely and proceed about their business, but the narrator promises to tell everything in more detail in the next volume. Actually, there are also spoilers for the rest of the series because we are also told that everything goes well with Handie’s farm, Mr. James is able to find a good tenant to rent it, and when Handie eventually returns home, he finds that his parents have been doing well and that Handie is able to repay the loan that bought his time from his father. There’s no suspense about any of that, whatever else happens in the following stories. In fact, the book says that the loan worked out so well for Handie that Rainbow thinks that he’d like to try a similar arrangement when he’s older. Handie says that, by that time, he might have the money to make him a loan himself.

I covered some of this above, but there are a few more things I’d like to talk about. Although the plot is a little slow and must of it focuses on how business deals work and the importance of hard work and prudent living, I actually thought it was an interesting book. What I found most interesting about it was the look at the daily lives and concerns of people in the mid-19th century.

I was a little surprised at the way the lawyer explained the laws concerning the ownership of Handie’s time and the laws about the obligations between children and parents. The relationships between children and parents and how they should behave toward each other, specifically what children owe to their parents are central to the story. 

The parents in the story aren’t perfect people. Handie’s parents have some obvious flaws, particularly Handie’s father. Handie and his mother would have some justification for being upset with Mr. Level for getting their family into this financial hole and then depending on Handie to work out a solution, but they’re not really angry with him. Mr. Level is within his legal rights to use his money and theirs in whatever way he wants as the head of the household and Handie’s father, even though it’s obvious that he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. Nobody questions Mr. Level’s legal authority over his family’s financial affairs, although everyone knows he isn’t good at handling money, and they haven’t been able to get him to improve before. However, Mr. James and Handie recognize that whatever solution they work out together can’t violate Mr. Level’s rights to make decisions about his family’s affairs and must respect his authority over his son. What Mr. James suggests to Handie is a way of emancipating Handie’s financial affairs from his father’s while providing Mr. Level with generous compensation, which improves the circumstances of the entire family.

The part about children legally owing their parents some form of compensation for the costs of raising them surprised me. I’ve heard of that as a social convention, but I didn’t think there were actual laws about that. I’m not completely sure whether the author was right about that part or not because I had some trouble finding a source to verify that, but if anyone else knows the answer, feel free to comment below and tell us. 

In modern times, there are laws about the care of children, and parents can be charged with neglect if they fail to provide certain necessities for their children, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a modern law about children giving compensation to their parents. After all, children can’t choose their parents like they can choose from among possible employers and negotiate their terms, so it’s not quite like entering into a business arrangement. I can see the logic of children helping the parents who raised them as part of family loyalty and affection, but the amount of care that family members show each other is difficult to codify because it’s hard to measure and put a price tag on human feelings. Emotional support is a natural and important part of family life, and it occurs to me that might be difficult to prove how much family members might have shown to each other. People value it, and it’s hard to say how much of that might be a service that they render to each other in a family. 

It also occurs to me that individual families in the past may not have looked at their family through a legal lens, even if they had the legal means to do so. When Handie speaks to his parents about reorganizing their family’s financial affairs and about his new position, repairing the farm he inherited on behalf of his own estate, Handie tells his parents that, when he returns home from this job, he will live with them again but that he will pay them for his room and board. His mother tells him that paying to live with them won’t be necessary because he’s their son, but Handie insists because he will be working and earning money as an independent person, no longer a dependent of his father. 

What that exchange tells me is that Handie’s mother doesn’t view him as an economic resource for their family. He’s just their son, and she loves him and would care for him, even if he couldn’t pay her for it. Their family isn’t overly concerned about money, they hardly even know how to manage the money they have, but they do understand family and human feeling. There are upsides to that because they are prepared to support each other just out of love and family loyalty, even when that would hurt their financial situation. The downside is that Handie has realized that, for their family’s future security, they’re going to have to be a little more strict about the financial aspects of the life they share together. While he is grateful for his parents’ feelings for him, he thinks that insisting on upholding his financial obligations to his parents will be more beneficial to them in the long run. 

Maybe people in real life looked at it in a similar fashion, depending on their own family’s circumstances. Maybe there were times when they didn’t care that much about keeping track of each family member’s financial contributions and insisting on exact repayment from each other because their feelings for each other were in the balance and/or because some family members might not be in a position to compensate each other financially to the same degree because of health reasons or other issues. If the law is really as Mr. James says it is, the rules about children compensating their parents might have only been invoked in situations where there was some serious dysfunction in the family, like if a child resisted working or helping out at home at all, and the parents were desperate. If the parents were satisfied with their relationships with their children, they probably wouldn’t bother to keep strict accounting of their children’s monetary value or get petty about the laws with them. At least, that’s my theory. In the case of the story, the characters are in a pretty serious financial problem, with the threat of losing their home, so they seriously need to straighten out their finances according to the law.

So far, because most of the focus of the story is on the Levels’ financial woes and how they straighten out their affairs, the story hasn’t gone into detail about race relations. However, I already know that this becomes more of a central theme in later installments of the story. At this point, we know that Rainbow couldn’t go to school like Handie did because he wasn’t welcome there. Nobody uses the term “segregation”, but that’s basically what it is. Nobody explains the laws regarding this kind of segregation, so I’m not sure if there’s an official law about that for this village or not, but there seems to be at least a social convention about that. 

Rainbow says that people have teased and taunted him about his race, although when he’s about to leave home with Handie, many of the local boys say goodbye to him in a friendly way. The book says that many of the local boys like Rainbow because he is kind, which made me wonder how many of those boys were the ones who didn’t want Rainbow in school with them. The story isn’t clear on that point, although I have heard of that concept of some white people liking black people as long as those black people “know their place.” I suspect that the situation in this town may be something like that. Maybe most of the townspeople accept Rainbow in a general way, as a neighbor and a worker and someone they might wave to or chat with, but they can get offended or even nasty if he starts getting above the station that they think he should occupy in life. We don’t have any specific names of people who have harassed Rainbow, so we don’t know if any of them are also sometimes friendly, as long as they think they have the social upper hand. It just strikes me that many of Rainbow’s relationships with the people in this village are probably conditional ones, the condition being that he doesn’t seem like he’s trying to be as good as or better than they are.

Handie and Rainbow haven’t been far from home at this point in their lives, and going to this new town will be a major adventure for them. Mr. James knows that Rainbow may have some problems from the people they meet along the way and that Handie may have trouble finding places for them to eat and sleep on their journey because Rainbow is black. However, Handie decides that he really wants Rainbow and that he’s willing to take responsibility for the both of them and deal with whatever problems they encounter. When Handie promises Rainbow that Rainbow will eat as well as he does, he’s promising that either he will make sure that people give Rainbow the services that they both need or that he will forgo those services himself. He will only stay and eat in places that accept Rainbow as well, whatever that means for them both along the way. Handie is becoming a young man, and as befits a real man, he’s taking responsibility for someone younger and is determined to look after him as both an employer and friend. There will be more to say about this as we continue through the story.

The Secret Language

The Secret Language by Ursula Nordstrom, 1960.

“Sooner or later everyone has to go away from home for the first time. Sometimes it happens when a person is young. Sometimes it happens when a person is old. But sooner or later it does happen to everyone. It happened to Victoria North when she was eight.”

Victoria North is attending boarding school for the first time at the Coburn Home School. Victoria is only eight years old, and this is her first time being away from home at all, so she is very nervous and shy. When she arrives at the school, she is met by an older girl named Ann, who shows her where her room is in the dormitory. Ann shares a room with Victoria and is supposed to show her around and tell her the rules, but she doesn’t really explain much. Victoria still feels lost and has trouble even finding the table where she is supposed to sit at dinner.

At dinner, one of the other girls, Martha Sherman, starts uses funny words, and she tells the other girls that they are part of a secret language that she made up. However, she refuses to tell anybody what they mean. Martha is moody and rude to the other girls at dinner, so the housemother sends her to her room before the meal is over.

Overcome with homesickness, Victoria cries at dinner and during the songs they have to sing afterward. No one has any patience with poor Victoria. Ann tells her that she’s being a crybaby. Other girls laugh at her when they see that she’s been crying. Victoria doesn’t know how she’ll be able to handle boarding school if every day is going to be like this!

The other girls in the dormitory say that Miss Mossman, the housemother, is strict. She blows her whistle at them and makes them line up for inspection every morning. Miss Blanchard, another teacher, is nicer, and she tries to reassure Victoria that things will get better when she gets to know the other students and makes some friends. However, nobody seems to want to be friends with Victoria. Nobody except Martha.

Martha is the only girl who seems interested in talking to Victoria. Martha doesn’t like Coburn Home School, either. More than anything, Martha wants to live at home and just go to an ordinary day school instead of being boarder. Victoria knows just how Martha feels! The other girls are surprised at how well Martha seems to get along with Victoria because Martha doesn’t usually want to be friendly with anyone.

The two of them start to talk about their homes and families. Martha’s father is an importer. She keeps saying that her parents are going to let her come home from boarding school and just go to day school, but it quickly becomes apparent that it isn’t likely. Victoria only has her mother, who works and sometimes needs to travel for work. She doesn’t even remember much about her father. Martha likes math, a subject which Victoria finds hard, but Martha says that she doesn’t reading, which is Victoria’s favorite subject. The two complement each other well.

Although Martha misses home, like Victoria does, and doesn’t really want to be a boarder, she is more experienced about boarding school life, and she helps Victoria to adjust to the school. Martha starts teaching Victoria about pieces of boarding school lore, like school rhymes and the traditions made up and passed down by students, and she also begins teaching her the secret language that she made up. There are only three words in Martha’s secret language, but Martha explains to Victoria what they mean, and the girls decide that they’ll make up more together. Martha becomes Victoria’s best friend all through the rest of her first year at boarding school.

Being friends with Martha makes boarding school feel better to Victoria. Martha still constantly talks about hating boarding school and how she definitely won’t come back next year, although Victoria realizes that’s just a wish of hers. Victoria also comes to realize that many other kids at the boarding school feel the same way. Even the ones who like the school admit that they’d really rather be at home with their parents. They daydream about just going to school during the day and coming straight home afterward, where they can just relax at home and eat what they want and not have to answer to whistles or line up for inspections. When Ann’s family decides to bring her home, Martha and Victoria ask Miss Mossman if they can share a room, and she agrees as long as the girls behave themselves.

Victoria is fascinated at the things that Martha knows about life at boarding school. Martha teaches her about “pie beds.” (I always heard it called “short-sheeting” when I was a kid, although I was never good at making beds the normal way in the first place, so I never fully grasped how to pull off the trick, and I didn’t go to summer camp or boarding school, where people typically did this anyway.) The girls argue about what costumes to wear to the school’s Halloween party, but the school’s handy man helps them make ice cream cone costumes that win a prize for the most original costume. The costumes are uncomfortable to wear, but Victoria is pleased and thinks that Martha should get the credit because the costume concept was her idea. Martha says that, next year, they’ll start planning their costumes earlier and come up with an even better idea. That’s the moment when Victoria realizes that Martha is no longer talking about how she’s definitely not coming back next year.

After the girls come back from Christmas vacation, Victoria is homesick again, but it turns out that their old, strict housemother has left to take care of her father, who is ill. Instead, they get a new housemother, Miss Denton, who is much nicer. She doesn’t blow whistles at the girls to wake them up. Victoria likes Miss Denton right away, and even the other girls in the house start calling her “Mother Carrie” as Miss Denton requests, even though the name strikes them all as silly at first. Martha finds Miss Denton to be overly sweet (“ick-en-spick” in the secret language), although she admits that she’s better than Miss Mossman.

Martha also finds herself liking Miss Blanchard, who teaches math. Miss Blanchard was nice to Victoria in the beginning, but Victoria can’t bring herself to like her much because she has so much trouble in math. Victoria has a fanciful imagination and likes to imagine that certain numbers are boys and others are girls, and Martha finds it frustrating because the idea doesn’t make sense to her, and Victoria doesn’t even follow an exact pattern, like odds vs. evens in her designation. Meanwhile, Victoria is confused by the math tricks that Miss Blanchard teaches Martha. Martha thinks they’re fun, but Victoria isn’t as good at math and has trouble following them.

The two girls find themselves arguing sometimes because of their different preferences, but they remain friends. It’s more that, now that they’re getting comfortable with each other and their school, more of their individual personalities are coming out. Victoria is also surprised to realize that, while she still frequently misses her mother, she no longer agrees with her mother about certain things. When her mother comes to visit the school, she worries about Victoria sleeping in the top bunk of their bunk bed, but Victoria herself loves it and has to assure her mother that she likes the top bunk. One thing that boarding school has done for Victoria is to give her a sense of independence and room to develop her own identity and preferences. She no longer has to get her mother’s permission for everything she does, as long as her housemother approves.

Victoria and Martha are both imaginative, and they begin enjoy their shared adventures at school. They try to hold a midnight feast in their room and search for hidden passages or secret compartments in the dormitory because Martha has heard or read that these things happen in boarding schools. Neither of those adventures goes as planned, but Miss Denton allows the girls to build a little play hut of their own with help from the school’s handy man. Miss Denton also gives the girls a little lockbox to keep some of their treasures in, and they hide it so they can have a buried treasure.

As the year comes to an end, Victoria knows that she’ll be coming back to boarding school next year, and the prospect doesn’t seem so bad as it did before. Martha isn’t sure whether she will or not, talking sometimes about what they’ll do next year but still hoping to live at home with her parents. But, if Martha doesn’t come back to school, it just wouldn’t be the same for Victoria!

My Reaction and Spoilers

One of the things I found interesting about this book is that it is set in the US. The iconic boarding school stories for children tend to be British stories, but the Coburn Home School is in New York state. The girls’ parents live in New York City.

Most of the story focuses on the girls’ relationship with each other and their growing sense of self-identity and confidence at their boarding school. They talk about classes they take and how they each feel about the other’s favorite subject, but they aren’t shown in classes themselves. The school is also a co-ed school, with both boys and girls, but the boys don’t enter into the story much because most of the action takes place around the girls’ dorm. The boys live in a different dorm. There is only one instance where a boy is shown talking to Victoria, with a hint that he might have a crush on Victoria, another new development in Victoria’s life at school. The little developments in the girls’ lives and attitudes through the school year and each little experience and adventure they have are the main focus of the story. These are the things that are helping the girls understand and develop their identities, self-confidence, and sense of independence.

Toward the end of the book, Miss Denton encourages the girls to think about all of the things they’ve learned this year, and not just the ones they’ve learned in class. The girls don’t fully understand and appreciate that Miss Denton is talking about personal growth and development, but they do consider things they’ve learned, like how to make beds, that midnight feasts aren’t as fun as they sound, and how Victoria learned not to be homesick. These are some of the little things that are part of their school experience and that are slowly making them more grown up and independent than they used to be.

Although Martha is a little older than Victoria and sometimes chides her for being babyish about some things (like putting a lose tooth under her pillow) or still homesick, the truth is that Martha has been just as homesick the entire time. Martha doesn’t appear to be as upset about boarding school as Victoria because she is not a new student in this book, like Victoria. She already went through her first year at boarding school before Victoria got there, so she no longer openly cries about being away from home. Still, the reason why she keeps talking about going home and living with her parents all the time is that she misses them. While the girls’ adventures during the school year and Victoria’s realizations about how boarding school gives her the opportunity to do things and be with people she wouldn’t at home make her feel better about coming back next year, Martha still feels uncertain about it. Martha has also come to love being friends with Victoria and even loves Miss Denton, but her feelings of homesickness leave her feeling torn about what she really wants.

There are hints that Martha will probably return to boarding school anyway, but Miss Denton reassures Victoria that she will be fine at boarding school even if Martha decides not to come next fall, reminding Victoria that she is now one of the “old girls” instead of a scared new one, like she used to be. Victoria also starts to feel that way herself. Martha will probably be back the next year to be with Victoria, Miss Denton, and Miss Blanchard, but readers can be reassured that, even if she doesn’t return, Victoria will be all right with her new sense of identity and independence. This first year at boarding school with Martha may be the beginning of a lifelong friendship or just one step to Victoria finding herself and building other friendships. Maybe it’s both. Victoria’s future life will be fine in general as she continues growing up and finding her way, learning to manage her life one step at a time.

There is a modern 21st century documentary about young children going to boarding school for the first time at 8 years old, What’s Life Like in a Private British Boarding School? | Leaving Home at 8 Years Old, on YouTube. The school in that documentary is British, but I was struck by the common feelings in the documentary and the book, even though they take place decades apart in different countries. There are just some parts of the human experience that last through the generations. The documentary also shows the parents’ side of the boarding school experience, the reasons why they choose to send their children to boarding school, and how they cope with their feelings about sending their children away and being separated from them.

Boarding school isn’t always easy for parents in terms of emotions, and there are hints of that in The Secret Language. We never see Martha’s parents in the book, so we don’t know what’s going on with them, but Victoria’s mother fusses over Victoria when she gets the chance, and she talks about how great it would be if she could arrange things so that Victoria can be home with her all the time again, too. If Victoria’s mother wasn’t a working single mother who has to travel for work, she probably wouldn’t have sent her away to boarding school at all. Miss Denton is very in tune with people’s feelings, and I think that she’s aware of all the complexities in the lives of the girls and their parents. She does her best to look after the girls emotionally, and that’s part of her urging the girls to consider other people’s feelings, to be thoughtful about each other, and to think about the ways they’ve been changing inside as well as outside. I think that the universal nature of the girls’ and adults’ feelings in the book are a sign of the author’s emotional awareness, understanding of how different types of people feel.

Ursula Nordstrom, the author of the book, was actually a famous children’s book editor. She is credited with helping to transform mid-20th century children’s literature to have more of a focus on children’s feelings, experiences, and imagination instead of being morality tales, focused on what adults want children to know or understand. The Secret Language was the only children’s book that she wrote herself. This YouTube video explains about her life and career.

Mandy

Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards, 1971.

At St. Martin’s Orphanage, there are usually about 30 children at a time, and the matron does her best to nurture her parentless charges. Mandy is a ten-year-old girl who has lived in the orphanage her entire life. She is intelligent, and she loves reading and daydreaming. She is allowed to work part time at a grocery store, and she spends most of her money buying books. She also loves nature and taking walks by herself. She enjoys spending time alone because she likes to daydream and admire flowers and other beauties of the natural world.

However, Mandy isn’t really happy, either. Even though the orphanage is kind to her, she gets along well with the other orphans, and she has her books and other things to keep herself busy, she is lonely and still misses having parents and the family life she’s never known. Because she has no memory of these things, it’s difficult to say whether she truly understands what she’s missing, but she definitely feels the lack of them in her life. As she gets older, she begins to feel more and more melancholy about it. She knows only that something is missing from her life, and she becomes more desperate about it. She craves a place that she can call her own, a place where she really belongs.

There is a wall behind the orphanage, and Mandy, with her vivid imagination, becomes increasingly curious about what’s on the other side of the wall. She asks Ellie, the maid at the orphanage about it, but as far as Ellie knows, it’s just more of the countryside. She’s never actually explored it herself. Mandy likes to imagine that there might be a castle and a unicorn beyond the wall.

One day, Mandy decides to try climbing over the wall to see for herself. What she sees is an apple orchard and a path through it. When she climbs down from the wall and follows the path, she finds an old, disused cottage with the remains of a garden. The cottage is empty of furniture. Mandy lets herself into the cottage and finds it dusty and in need of repair, and there’s no sign than anyone has been there for years. However, there is a marvelous room in the small house that is decorated with real seashells! Mandy is fascinated, and she wonders who used to live there.

The idea comes to Mandy that she could “adopt” the house and care for it as if it was her own. Obviously, nobody has been there for a long time, and nobody would know or care if she cleaned it up, but she would feel good, having a place of her own and something to care for. When she returns to the orphanage, Ellie tells her that she asked the matron what was on the other side of the wall, and she says that it’s a large, old estate, where nobody lives anymore. Mandy is pleased with that because, if no one lives on the estate where the cottage is, there will be no one to notice when she goes to visit the cottage.

She asks for gardening advice from the gardener at the orphanage without telling him exactly why she wants to know, and he even lets her borrow some tools. Mandy loves tending to her very own garden, and she uses some of her pocket money from the grocery store to buy seeds for the garden and some things for the house. Mandy loves seeing how the cottage and garden improve under her care, but her roommate, Sue, begins to wonder where she keeps disappearing to, and the adults begin to wonder what she is doing with the things she buys and borrows.

The matron tells Mandy that she’s worried about what Mandy is doing because it could be dangerous for her to go off alone where nobody knows where she’s going. Mandy lies to her, saying that she had a project of making a garden for herself but that she gave it up because it was too much work. The matron says that she understands why she would want to have a place to call her own and offers her a spot in the orphanage garden to tend as her own. Mandy feels terrible about lying to the matron, but the thought that the matron might make her give up the special place she’s found because it doesn’t really belong to her or because it’s too dangerous for her to go there alone is just too much.

As the seasons change, Mandy enjoys slipping away to her cottage whenever she can, working in her garden and watching the animals that live nearby. However, the matron has become increasingly suspicious of Mandy’s odd behavior, Sue is angry with her for keeping secrets from her, and there are signs that someone has been at the cottage while she wasn’t there. There are footprints outside the cottage and the hoofprints of a horse, and there are signs that someone has been fixing things. Fortunately, this mysterious person doesn’t seem to mind her being at the cottage. Her mysterious friend leaves little presents and notes for her. More and more, Mandy fears that her secrets will be discovered, but when she becomes ill and needs help at the cottage, she becomes grateful for the help of a friend who knows where she is. Having a place to call your own is good, but having friends and a family who care make a place a real home.

Update: A site reader pointed out that I should have explained that Julie Andrews Edwards is the same Julie Andrews who played Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins in the Disney musical, and the queen in The Princess Diaries movies. When I was younger, I didn’t realize that she also wrote children’s books. She is also known for writing The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, which I haven’t covered yet. Julie Andrews’s early life was difficult because her parents divorced and each married other people during WWII. At various times, Julie Andrews lived with each of her parents and stepparents and traveled around as she began performing with her family as a child. Her family was poor, and she later described her stepfather as being a violent alcoholic. Her chaotic early life may have been a factor in this story about a lonely girl looking for a place to belong and a real sense of family.

My Reaction and Spoilers

This is a sweet story about having a place to call home and a real family. Mandy craves for these things, even before she truly understands what it means to experience them. Parts of the story are sad and sentimental, but others are just enchanting. This book fits well with the Cottagecore aesthetic. The cottage in the orchard is charming, and Mandy’s care for it reminds me of other children’s books, like Dandelion Cottage, where children have their own secret places to fix up and care for.

Mandy gets wrapped up in her special secret place, tending the garden and watching the animals there, but it gets her into trouble with her friend and roommate, Sue, and with the matron of the orphanage because of the secrets she’s keeping and the way she keeps helping herself to things she really shouldn’t take and slipping away to spend time at the cottage without telling anyone where she’s going. Mandy loves the cottage because she can imagine it as her own home, a place that belongs to her and where she belongs, but Mandy needs people, too. Sue’s friendship for her helps her when she gets into trouble, the matron turns out to be more understanding than Mandy feared, and Mandy’s adventures with her cottage bring her into contact with people who become the family Mandy really needs. Once Mandy has the family she needs, she no longer feels compelled to keep the cottage all to herself, and she decides to share it with the other girls at the orphanage. Mandy’s new home with her new family is every bit as charming and magical as her cottage. It’s a big, old house with secret passages that she explores with her new brother.

However, I think that it’s important to note that not everything in the story is easy and happy for Mandy. All through the story, she struggles with her emotions, experiencing sadness and loneliness and trying to understand what they mean. Her new family doesn’t fully accept her immediately, either. They are never mean or rejecting of her. They are friendly and helpful people from the first time they meet Mandy, but it takes some time of them getting to know her before they decide that they want her to be a permanent part of their family. There isn’t a lot of high drama, and her new brother is never jealous of her or mean to her. However, the family does take some time to make their decision after Mandy spends Christmas with them, and that adds to Mandy’s inner distress.

There are points in the story when Mandy’s fate seems uncertain, and she considers running away from the orphanage. The headmistress becomes concerned about Mandy because of her melancholy and tells the family considering her that Mandy has begun asking her questions again about her parents and how they died, something that she hasn’t done for years, showing that she has become preoccupied with the concept of family life and her lack of it. The family is concerned for Mandy and understanding of her feelings, but I thought that having the family take time to get to know Mandy and to consider what having her join their family would mean was realistic. I think the drama was softened a little to keep the gentle feel of the story, but there’s enough emotion and inner turmoil that it doesn’t feel like Mandy’s problems resolve too easily.

Sue and Mandy bring up the question about whether Mandy’s discovery of the cottage and her new family was a matter of luck. Sue is envious because it seems like everything happens to Mandy. Mandy asks her new father if that’s a matter of luck, but he says that Mandy is special and that things happen to her because she is brave and goes looking for them. She is a quiet person, but she takes her life into her own hands and pursues what she wants, where other people might be too timid to do it. Technically, Mandy broke rules and took some risks to care for her secret cottage, but she did it because it was important to her, and it worked out in the end. Her new father seems to appreciate Mandy’s spirit and determination.

Go Jump in the Pool!

This is the second book in the Bruno and Boots series (also called the MacDonald Hall series), which is about a pair of boys at a Canadian boarding school for boys and their humorous adventures and pranks. 

Once again, Bruno and Boots are faced with a problem when Boots’s parents consider sending him to a different school.  MacDonald Hall, unlike its athletic rival York Academy, doesn’t have its own swimming pool. MacDonald Hall is superior to York Academy in academics, but they often lose to them at swim meets because the MacDonald Hall team can only train at the local YMCA once week.  Boots’s father is an athlete who once competed in the Olympics, and athletics are very important to him.  Because of York’s superior athletic facilities, he’s considering sending Boots there instead. Bruno and Boots ask their headmaster why the school doesn’t have a pool, and he says that they want to build one but haven’t been able to raise the necessary money. Of course, Bruno, the idea man, immediately starts getting ideas.

Boots loves MacDonald Hall and doesn’t want to leave his friends, especially his best friend and roommate, Bruno. Although Bruno’s schemes often cause chaos, they do produce results in the end, so he is able to convince his friends to go along with them.  While Boots writes letters home, talking about how great MacDonald Hall is and how much he loves it there, hoping to sway his parents’ minds, Bruno begins scheming for a way to raise the money so that MacDonald Hall can build a new pool.

First, Bruno gets the other students at the school to hold a rummage sale, selling things of their own and even some furnishings from their dorm rooms. The girls from Miss Scrimmage’s school across the road also join in their efforts, including donating some items that they liberated from their headmistress’s rooms. Mr. Sturgeon, the headmaster of MacDonald Hall is upset when he finds that the boys are holding a large public sale without his permission, and there are some complications because of the items that the girls stole from Miss Scrimmage, including the shotgun that she keeps for protection. While almost everyone would be relieved by someone else buying that gun and removing it from Miss Scrimmage’s dangerous hands, the purchaser turns out to be a robber, who uses the gun in a holdup. Chaos ensues when the police come to arrest Miss Scrimmage because the gun had her name and address engraved on it. However, Mr. Sturgeon manages to get the situation under control by explaining about the sale and giving Miss Scrimmage an alibi for the crime, and he is persuaded not to punish the boys by his wife, who is sympathetic to the boys, and a member of the school’s board of directors, who is impressed by the boys’ initiative and school spirit. However, Mr. Sturgeon tells the boys not to hold any more sales and that he needs to know about any future fundraising efforts.

Their next fundraising project is a talent show with students from both MacDonald Hall and Miss Scrimmage’s. It doesn’t go too badly, although there are complications. Mrs. Sturgeon’s attempts to take pictures of the performers startle the performers with bright flashes that cause a few accidents. Elmer’s bird calls accidentally attract an owl that flies away with Miss Scrimmage’s hat. Then, several of Miss Scrimmage’s girls modify their dancing costumes to make them skimpier, scandalizing Miss Scrimmage. In spite of the incidents of minor chaos, Mr. Sturgeon appreciates that the boys have managed to raise more money, and they’ve also managed to get some of the more shy students, including Elmer, to participate in school activities.

Mr. Sturgeon does put a stop to some of Bruno’s more inappropriate ideas. He refuses to let them hold a casino-themed fundraising event or bet on a race horse because he can’t condone gambling, and he won’t let them enter a fellow student in an eating contest out of concern for the student’s health. However, Bruno convinces his fellow students to enter any contest they can find with a cash prize. Unfortunately, some of the contests also have non-cash prizes, which is how they end up with a massive amount of jelly beans and a refrigerator. When Bruno asks Mr. Sturgeon for permission for them to hold a funny photo contest at the school, he agrees on the condition that the photos be tasteful enough for a school environment. Of course, the students’ attempts to deliberately produce humorous pictures also lead to some antics and bizarre pranks.

After that, the boys hold a kind of carnival that they call “Individual Effort Day” because each student gets to do their own kind of fundraising effort, making and selling things or producing some form of entertainment. While everyone, including the girls at Miss Scrimmage’s school, who are also participating, tries to come up with an original idea, some of the students try spying on each other and stealing ideas. Mr. Sturgeon particularly enjoys the game that Bruno and Boots are holding, where people pay to throw wet sponges at them. He accurately hits both of them and also hits Miss Scrimmage when she passes by. Cathy and Diane’s haunted house scares Miss Scrimmage, and Mr. Sturgeon gets hooked on an elaborate pinball game built by Elmer.

When Mr. Sturgeon points out that the boys have mostly been getting money from the students and parents of MacDonald Hall and Miss Scrimmage’s, Bruno takes his attempts to get money from the public too far by setting up a toll stop on the road that runs by the school. It’s illegal to get money under false pretenses, so Mr. Sturgeon calls a halt to all the fundraising efforts. However, he changes his mind when he finds out that some of the boys’ parents, including Boots’s parents, have been considering sending their boys to York Academy because of the pool issue. Realizing that the boys have been trying to save the school and continue going to school with their friends, Mr. Sturgeon lifts their punishment, although he still gives them a warning that if they do anything illegal again, it will jeopardize the rest of their lives.

The boys still have the problem that they are thousands of dollars short of their goal, even after Cathy wins a large cash prize in a recipe contest. There is still one student at the school who hasn’t contributed to all the fundraising efforts, though: Boots’s old roommate from the previous book in the series, the wealthy but stuffy and fussy hypochondriac, George. George has resisted getting involved in all the weird activities happening on campus because he considers them all “vulgar”, but when they finally explain to him that the point of it all is to raise funds for the school, he approves. If there’s one thing George knows how to do well, it’s manage money. George convinces them that they don’t need to raise more money from other people if they know how to put their money to work for them in the stock market. The other boys are a bit dubious about letting George invest their money, but George knows what he’s doing. Meanwhile, Boots’s parents have been taking all the letters he’s been writing them about how great MacDonald Hall is and how happy he is there to heart. In the end, they just want their son to be happy.

I always liked the Bruno and Boots series when I was a kid. The pranks aren’t quite as funny to me as when I was a kid, but I like it that the boys’ antics always have a purpose. I don’t like stories where people play pranks just to be mean, but the boys’ escapades in this series are always in support of their school and their friends.

There are also aren’t really any villains in the series, and there are no villainous characters in the story. Even when people are in opposition to the boys, they aren’t really evil. There is the rival school, which is snobby and rude to the boys, but other than giving the boys a motive for fundraising for the pool project, they don’t play much of a role in the story. The headmaster of MacDonald Hall is a good man who really cares for the boys, and even when he punishes them, he has their welfare at heart. The boys, especially Bruno, have a tendency to go too far with their schemes, and they do need someone to restrain them at times. George wasn’t a very likeable character in the previous the book, and even here, he’s kind of fussy and not too fond of Bruno and Boots. However, he also cares about the school, and this time, he has just the talents that they need. The other boys at the school also appreciate what George does for them, and they hail him as a hero.

I also appreciated that, in the end, Boots’s parents acknowledge that it’s more important for him to be happy with his school and his friends than for him to seriously train for the Olympics. Boots’s letters are overly enthusiastic about the things he’s been learning in class, and I’m sure his parents know that he’s not really that excited about his math lessons, but they can read between the lines and realize that the purpose of his letters is to indirectly ask them not to make him switch schools. Even if MacDonald Hall wasn’t able to get a swimming pool of their own, I think his parents would have agreed to let him stay there if he insisted that he just wouldn’t be happy anywhere else.

Freckle Juice

Freckle Juice by Judy Blume, 1971, 2014.

Andrew admires his friend, Nicky, for all his freckles. Andrew thinks freckles are interesting, and if he had a bunch of freckles, maybe his mother wouldn’t notice when his neck was dirty and make him wash it every morning.

When Andrew asks Nicky how he got so many freckles, Nicky says that he was just born with them. However, a classmate, Sharon, overhears the boys talking and claims that she has a secret family recipe that can give a person freckles. She offers to sell her secret recipe to Andrew for 50 cents.

Andrew isn’t sure that he really believes that Sharon has a recipe that can give him freckles, but he figures that he has nothing to lose by trying it. After all, if it doesn’t work, he can always ask for his money back.

Sharon’s recipe is a disgusting conglomeration of weird ingredients. Does it actually stand a chance of working, or will the only thing it gives Andrew be a stomach ache?

My Reaction and Spoilers

This is a short, easy book for kids in early elementary school, but it’s also a fun story about self-acceptance. Through this experience and the help of the kids’ understanding teacher, he comes to realize that there’s no point in envying other people, but there are benefits to learning to appreciate yourself. It turns out that, while Andrew was envying Nicky for his freckles, Nicky never liked them himself. The kids’ teacher helps them both to appreciate themselves for the qualities they have, pointing out that Nicky’s freckles suit him while they just wouldn’t look the same on Andrew. Hopefully, the kids also learn to beware of miracle cures and anything people like Sharon have to sell!

The Witch’s Spoon

The Witch’s Spoon by Mary Cunningham, illustrated by Marilyn Miller, 1975.

Tom and Lauren are spending a week with their grandmother at her beach cottage during the summer. They have visited the cottage many times before, and they love revisiting all their favorite places, the bunk beds on the cottage’s sleeping porch, like the tree where they always see baby owls (which they call the owl tree), and the place where they once found some lost coins (which they call the money spot). They know the cottage well, inside and out. This summer, though, there are a few things that are different.

The first thing that the kids notice that is different is that their Grandma has added a new item to her curio cabinet: a big silver spoon with a long handle. They ask their grandmother about the spoon, and she explains that it’s a witch’s spoon. She recently inherited it from the children’s Great-Aunt Hannah (that would be their grandmother’s sister), who used to live in Massachusetts. The spoon is a family heirloom from the time of the witchcraft trials in Salem (“when witches were thought to be as much of a problem to people as air pollution is now” – this is from the mid-1970s). Their grandmother says that there are good witches and bad witches, and good witches would use spoons like this one to stir love potions. Tom doesn’t believe in witches, but Lauren is fascinated by the spoon and the idea of love potions. She is sure that she senses magic from the spoon.

The next thing that will make the children’s visit here different from previous years is that their grandmother has decided that they’re old enough to have a June Day. June Days are a family tradition, and it’s not just because it’s June. During a June Day, the usual household rules are suspended for one day, and the children are allowed to go wherever they want and do anything they want, all on their own. Grandma says that she will prepare meals at the usual times, but for that day, it’s up to the children whether or not they show up for them, so they don’t need to interrupt their adventures. If the children aren’t there to eat their meals, Grandma will share the food with their nextdoor neighbor, Mr. Bunby. There are only a few safety rules that the children have to follow: they are expected to by careful when attempting any activity that might have an element of danger, and they have to leave their grandmother a note about the general area where they are going, like the beach or the nearby woods, so if they’re not back by dark, she’ll know where to look for them. The June Day ends when it gets dark, and the children must be home by then.

The grandmother understands that there is a certain element of risk in letting the children go off by themselves, and she reminds them that “every box has its pill.” That means that, while their children can choose what they’re going to do, they have to face the consequences of their choices, no matter what they might be, good or bad. “If you open the box and find a bitter pill, you have to swallow it.” Getting to make their own rules and decisions for a day doesn’t get them out of taking the consequences of whatever they do. If they get hurt or get into serious trouble, not only will they suffer the hurt or trouble they cause, but their parents may not let them come back next summer, so they need to keep that in mind when making their choices. Freedom still comes with responsibility, and that’s what the children need to be old enough to understand before they can have a June Day. Tom says that they understand, and that they won’t do anything too wild. Their grandmother tells them that they can have their June Day in two days, so they will have time to look forward to the treat and plan for it.

Tom and Lauren have different interests, so each of them decides to make up their own plans for a private adventure. Tom already knows what he wants to do for his June Day. There is a cave near the beach where the children usually aren’t allowed to go, but there are rumors that there is a giant cavern inside where pirates have hidden their treasure. Getting inside the cave will be difficult and involves an element of risk, but he is determined to spend his June Day hunting for pirate treasure. He doesn’t want to persuade Lauren to join him because he thinks she’ll be too scared to do it.

Meanwhile, Lauren thinks how she’s always wanted to hold a baby owl in her hands. She loves animals, and she decides that she’ll try to hold a baby owl on her June Day. She decides she won’t tell Tom about it, because he would probably think that was a silly thing to do. Lauren thinks that she even might try to make a baby owl a pet, just for the rest of the week.

There is one other thing that is different about this year, though. Their grandmother informs them that their cousin, Elizabeth, will be joining them at the cottage this year. Elizabeth’s father is the brother of Tom and Lauren’s father. Years ago, he moved to Italy and married a woman there, and they had only one daughter, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Elizabeth’s parents died in a car accident, and Elizabeth has been living with her three aunts in Rome. She has never been the United States before and has never met either her grandmother or cousins, so the children’s grandmother has decided to invite her to visit this year.

Tom and Lauren aren’t thrilled at the idea of meeting their Italian cousin. It’s partly jealousy at sharing their grandmother with a girl they don’t really know. Elizabeth was named after their grandmother, and Lauren worries that Grandma will like her better because of that. Tom complains that she’ll probably be fat and smell like garlic because people in Italy eat a lot of spaghetti. It’s a mean thing to say, and even Lauren thinks it sounds ridiculous, but the children’s negative attitudes are also because they realize that Elizabeth’s presence will complicate their secret plans for their June Day. In order to have their secret adventures by themselves, they will also have to avoid their cousin trying to tag along.

In spite of their negativity and thoughts about playing pranks on Elizabeth so she won’t want to stay, Lauren realizes that she is also curious about this cousin and seeing what she’s like. When Elizabeth arrives the next day, she is a slim girl with dark hair, who doesn’t smell like garlic at all. Elizabeth speaks fluent English as well as Italian because she goes to an international school in Rome, so the children are able to talk to each other easily. Lauren feels jealous about the attention that their grandmother showers on Elizabeth, but Elizabeth is nice to Lauren. Elizabeth likes to knit, and she says that she would like to make a sweater for Lauren. Lauren asks her if she’ll have enough time because she’s only visiting for a week, and Elizabeth says that if it’s not finished by the time she has to leave, she will mail it to her. Lauren begins to feel a little sorry that she thought bad things about Elizabeth, but she also still feels jealous because of all the things Elizabeth knows how to do. Elizabeth can play the flute and wears pretty clothes as well as knitting and speaking multiple languages. Then, their grandmother announces that Elizabeth will be allowed to choose one item from her curio cabinet to take back to Italy with her. Tom and Lauren aren’t even allowed to open the curio cabinet without permission!

Their grandmother tells Tom and Lauren that they will each have a chance to choose something from the cabinet when they’re older. The only reason why Elizabeth is choosing now is that she lives far away and can’t come very often. Tom and Lauren each have favorite items in it that they tell Elizabeth to definitely not take before they get a chance to choose, and Lauren suggests that Elizabeth take the witch’s spoon. The witch’s spoon hasn’t been in the cabinet long enough for Tom or Lauren to have developed an attachment to it. Elizabeth is intrigued by the story that witches used it for making love potions, and their grandmother says that, in times of trouble, you can look into the bowl of the spoon and see answers. Elizabeth says that it’s an Italian tradition that a good witch gives children presents on January 6th (see The Legend of Old Benfana). She tries to see her deceased father in the spoon and is disappointed when she can’t. Their grandmother says that it might not be magical anymore or maybe people only saw in the spoon what they wanted to see.

Tom and Lauren continue making their secret plans for their June Day, each kind of wondering what the other is planning to do. When the day arrives, they each get up early and put their plans into action before anybody can ask them what they’re going to do. Of course, their plans don’t turn out the way they thought. Lauren’s attempt to hold a baby owl and maybe make one a pet don’t take into account how the mother owl would feel about that. In the cave, Tom accidentally falls and drops his flashlight, so he’s trapped and unable to find his way out. Neither one of them was specific enough in their notes for anybody to find them quickly when they get into trouble. Fortunately, Elizabeth turns out to be not only a tag-along but a helpful partner in their adventures. Through their various adventures and disasters on this special June Day, the three children come to feel like they really are cousins. At the end of the story, the grandmother makes a special tea blend, and Elizabeth stirs it with the witch’s spoon, turning it into a love potion, but for family love.

My Reaction and Spoilers

The book doesn’t say exactly where the story takes place, but I think it’s supposed to be the California coast because that’s where the author lived. The descriptions of the pine forest near the cottage and beach fit the California coast, and the same author wrote another book called The Rescue that takes place at a cabin in California.

The story has some nice cottagecore vibes, with the children having fun and adventures in nature. There are times that they reminisce about past summers at the cottage as well as enjoying the current summer. They once kept a lost, wild baby ferret as a pet temporarily one summer before releasing it back into the woods, and they always have to look for baby owls in the owl tree when they arrive at the cottage. They spend time at the beach, swimming, wading, sunning themselves, and looking for seashells. Lauren has a favorite type of seashell, called angel’s toenails. When Tom explores the cave, he likes seeing the stalactites, and he sees bats and a type of blind fish in the stream of the cave.

Few children these days have the same level of freedom that these children have at their grandmother’s seaside cottage, although for somewhat obvious reasons. Their grandmother speaks to them honestly and sincerely about the nature of risk-taking and accepting the consequences of their actions, but adults will realize that there are obvious problems with each of their plans for June Day. Even as a kid, I would not have tried to pick up a baby owl or keep one as a pet. Wild animals do not want to be made into pets, and they don’t want their babies to be picked up and held by humans. Owls are cute, but they are also birds prey with sharp beaks and talons and will fight back if they feel like someone is intruding on their personal space. Even my child self would have thought of that long before Lauren tries her June Day experiment. Of course, that’s mostly because my elders impressed on me that nobody should mess with wild animals. The reason why we know that certain things are bad ideas is that people actually tried them and found out from personal experience. Maybe some people have to try things themselves before they understand or believe why they’re bad ideas. I have to admit that I once tried to pick up a dead cactus pad when I was about four years old because I had the idea that dead things couldn’t hurt me, so I figured out that it wouldn’t hurt to touch dead cactus. That’s the Arizona version of this type of experimenting with interacting with the natural world, and I was very, very wrong. One benefit of this kind of hands-on experimenting is that the lessons you learn stay with you forever, but as the grandmother of this story says, you have to accept the results of your experiments, whether it’s a clawed head or a handful of cactus spines.

Tom is the one who takes the greatest risk in this story. When he first considers using the June Day to explore the cave, he knows that they’re not usually allowed to go there. The question that immediately came to my mind was why, and the obvious answer is that the adults know that the cave is too dangerous. Tom considers the difficulties of getting into the cave but not the dangers he can encounter inside. Just because the rules have been suspended for the day doesn’t mean that the dangers have also been suspended for the day, which was what their grandmother was trying to get the children to understand. It’s not unlike learning that cactus spines are just as sharp when the cactus is dead as when it was alive. Fortunately, Lauren and Elizabeth manage to rescue Tom without anyone getting hurt.

The adventures that Tom and Lauren end up sharing with Elizabeth help them bond as cousins. They also learn that, while Lauren has some unique skills and lives a very different kind of life in Rome that is exciting in its own way, she isn’t perfect and neither is her life. Elizabeth is an orphan who still misses her parents. The skills that she has are ones that she’s learned from her aunts, who each have their own standards for what Elizabeth should learn and do. Elizabeth’s aunts love her and care for her, but she isn’t always allowed to do what she wants. This summer represents an unusual amount of freedom for her, too.

I think Tom and Lauren might have taken Elizabeth’s sudden arrival better if their grandmother had prepared them for it instead of springing it on them without warning or discussion of how it would affect their summer plans. The grandmother might have also prevented some hard feelings by talking to all of the children about the gift for Elizabeth from the curio cabinet. I understand why Tom and Lauren wanted to prevent Elizabeth from suddenly taking things that they were attached to. If she had, it would have caused some hard feelings among the cousin. If I were the grandmother in this situation, I think I would have sat all three children down and told them that I wanted to give each of them a special gift from the cabinet. Tom and Lauren would have to leave their gifts in the cabinet for the present, partly because the heirloom Tom values most is a pearl-handled gun, and I think he’s too young to have that unsupervised. However, it would be understood that each of the children would own a special heirloom, and they could discuss their choices among themselves so there wouldn’t be hard feelings or the impression that one child was given more choice than the others.

There aren’t really occult themes in the story. The witch’s spoon only does one thing that appears like magic at one point, and there is a logical explanation for that. The love potion tea really just caps off the children’s day of adventure, when they bond over helping each other. The children know that the spoon probably really isn’t magic. The real magic in their imaginations and the time they spend together as family.

Ruth Fielding in Moving Pictures

One day, while Ruth Fielding is out with her friends, Helen and Tom, they see a film crew working by the river. (Because this is the 1910s, they are making a silent film and using the kind of old-fashioned movie camera that needs to be cranked, like the one shown in the picture to the right.) They talk about whether to not they would like to be in movies themselves. The girls think it sounds exciting, but Tom thinks that they’re too young. The girls say that they are not too young because the actress who is being filmed looks like she’s about their age. As they watch, the young actress accidentally falls into the river, which is freezing cold because it’s winter. Ruth and her friends hurry to help pull her out before she drowns. When they get her out of the river, Ruth is appalled at how unconcerned the director is for the actress’s health while she’s clearly suffering from the cold. Ruth and her friends take the actress, Hazel Gray, back to the Red Mill where Ruth lives, where she can warm up and recover.

While Hazel is resting at the Red Mill, she and Ruth tell each other about themselves. Like Ruth, Hazel is also an orphan. Her parents were actors, and some friends raised Hazel to be an actress after her parents died. Ruth tells Hazel that she has been thinking about writing a movie scenario (script) just for fun, and Hazel offers to show it to the director if she does. Ruth isn’t sure she likes the idea because she didn’t like the director, Mr. Grimes. Hazel explains that, while the director can be callous and abrasive, he is a famous director who really knows his business and can help actors and scenario writers make their careers.

The next day, Mr. Hammond, the manager of the film company, comes to the Red Mill to see how Hazel is and to ask Ruth about how the accident happened. He seems concerned about whether or not Ruth’s description of what happened matches what Mr. Grimes told him. Ruth explains what she saw to Mr. Hammond, and she also tells him what she thinks about Mr. Grimes’s lack of concern about Hazel’s welfare. Mr. Hammond says that it’s impossible to change other people, indicating that he knows how callous and unpleasant Mr. Grimes can be, but he promises to make sure that Hazel gets a fair deal for her acting and the accident she suffered.

While he is there, Mr. Hammond becomes fascinated by the quaintness of the Red Mill. He thinks that it would make an excellent setting for a movie. Ruth says that she would love to write a scenario about the Red Mill herself. Mr. Hammond asks her if she’s ever written a scenario before, and Ruth admits that she hasn’t, but there has to be a first time for everything. Mr. Hammond is amused and says that he would be very interested in any scenario that Ruth might write. However, he suggests to her that, before she writes a scenario about the Red Mill, she write a short story about something else, something exciting, so he can see what her writing is like. Ruth happily agrees, and after she returns to boarding school with her friends, she starts writing.

Ruth and Helen are now seniors at their boarding school, and they are starting to think nervously about their lives after graduation. They know that they want to go on to college, but they find the prospect intimidating, too. Neither of them is quite sure what they want to do with their lives. The idea of growing up in general sounds frightening.

The girls aren’t the only ones showing signs of growing up but feeling awkward about it. Ruth finds herself getting unexpectedly jealous about Tom having a crush on Hazel. Helen says that Ruth simply hasn’t been paying attention to the things the boys are doing. All of Tom’s friends at his school have crushes on actresses, and they’ve been collecting pictures of them from the newspapers and pinning them up in their rooms. At the same time, Tom seems oddly sullen that other people are starting to treat Ruth and his sister as young ladies. It’s one thing for him to have a crush on Hazel, who is a couple of years older than they are, but he doesn’t seem to like the idea of Helen and Ruth seeming too grown up.

These things are in the back of Ruth’s mind as she finishes writing her story. After she sends her story to Mr. Hammond, a fire breaks out in one of the dormitories at the school because of a neglected candle. The dormitory that is destroyed is the one where Ruth lives with her friends. Ruth is tempted to try to save their belongings, but the teachers tell her that it’s just too dangerous. They’re just thankful that all the girls are safe.

After the fire, there is the question of rebuilding the dormitory. At first, they think that the insurance money will pay for a new dorm, but it turns out that the school’s forgetful headmaster accidentally let the insurance policy lapse. Some of the girls at the school are from wealthy families, and they are sure that their parents would be willing to contribute to the building of a new dorm, but Ruth sees a couple of problems with that. First, while the wealthier students’ families would certainly be able to contribute sizable amounts toward the building project, the families of poorer students may hesitate to contribute at all because they may be embarrassed that they cannot possibly match the donations the wealthier families can contribute. Second, the girls are overly relying on their parents. While the parents may be glad to help, Ruth thinks it would be better to find a way that the students themselves can contribute to the building fund. The other students agree that they would all like to find a way for everyone to contribute.

An idea for a group project the entire school can participate in comes to Ruth when Mr. Hammond sends Ruth a check to pay for her first story. He thinks that Ruth has a great talent for writing, and he’s going to make her story into a short, one-reel movie! That makes Ruth realize that, if she can write a short story for a short movie, she can write one for a long, five-reel picture. If she can write a long scenario for a movie, all of the girls in the school can be in the film! She thinks that she can persuade Mr. Hammond to produce the picture and distribute it to the surrounding town, and the royalties from the movie can pay for the dorm reconstruction.

Mr. Hammond agrees to help Ruth and her friends make a movie on behalf of the school, and the school’s headmistress agrees to allow the students to participate in the project. The donations that the school has already received from the parents have paid for the removal of the ruins of the old dormitory and the beginning of the construction of the new one, and the money the girls earn from the movie can pay for the completion of the building project. Ruth already has an idea for the plot of the movie, one about girls at a boarding school, so they can film the movie on their own campus. Mr. Grimes turns out to be the film director, and he is still temperamental, but he shows more patience when dealing with the students than he had before.

There are complications, of course. Hazel Gray is one of the professional actresses helping with the movie, and Ruth is still jealous about how fond she seems of Tom. Then, there is drama when the other girls learn which girl left the candle unattended and vent their wrath on her. The girl, Amy, was already a troubled student with an unhappy home life. Then, Amy gets upset when the boy she likes seems to be getting too friendly with Ruth, and she runs away. Ruth and the other girls have to search for her, and they learn the embarrassing secret behind the dormitory fire and some other secrets that Amy has been hiding from them.

Not exactly a mystery, but there are some things that Ruth and her friends discover some secrets about their prickly fellow student, Amy, and when she runs away, the other girls have to figure out where she went and rescue her. Although Ruth and the other girls are unhappy with Amy because of the dormitory fire and because Amy frequently has a sour attitude, but they become more sympathetic when they learn more about some secrets that Amy is hiding. The embarrassing secret behind the dormitory fire is that Amy is afraid of the dark. She doesn’t want to admit it to the other girls because she doesn’t want to be teased, but that’s why she left a candle burning in her room; she was afraid of returning to her room after dark. The school has electric lights, but she grew up in a more old-fashioned town and isn’t used to them.

Worse still, Amy is terrified that her father will find out that she caused a fire at school. He is already harsh with her, and it has gotten worse since he remarried. He seems to view the child from his first marriage as a nuisance, and it seems like he sent her to boarding school to get her out of the way as he starts a new life with her stepmother. Actually, Amy’s father’s reasons for sending her to boarding school were not just to get her out of the way. Ruth and the others learn that part of Amy’s difficulties with her stepmother have partly been because Amy behaved badly toward her because her aunts disliked her and were a bad influence on Amy. It wasn’t just that the boy she liked seemed to like Ruth that made her run away; she had gotten an angry letter from her father that not only accused her of doing something bad before she left home but also saying that he has heard rumors about her involvement with the fire. He is coming to the school to find out for himself what she’s been doing there, and Amy is terrified of what he will do when he gets there.

To find Amy, the girls and Curly (the boy Amy likes) have to think of all the things they know about Amy and the places she could have gone. Curly knows more than the girls do because Amy confides in him. I appreciated that Ruth and the other girls are much more active in this story in solving the problem of Amy’s disappearance than they often are in other books. In the earlier books in this series, Ruth and her friends frequently rely on chance and coincidence to reveal hidden information and other people to carrying out the final action, but this time, they use their own reasoning to figure out where to look for Amy and go after her themselves. In some ways, I think that the more active roles that Ruth and the others play in the story are because they are growing up. Amy is younger than Ruth and her friends, and they feel responsible for her. In earlier books, adults and others were looking after them and helping them, but now, they are older than someone else. I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops in other books in the series.

When they find Amy, she has had a bad reaction from poison oak or poison sumac, and everyone feels sorry for her. Amy gets the first sympathy that she’s had for some time. Amy straightens out her relationship with her father when he comes and realizes that she was unfair to her stepmother. The other girls at school forgive Amy for the fire when they find out what she’s been through, and her father makes a generous donation to the building fund.

One of the most unique features of this book is that the characters are growing up, and it’s part of the story. That’s something that doesn’t happen in other, later Stratemeyer Syndicate books. In this book, Ruth and her friends graduate from their boarding school. As the girls think about their graduation and going on to college, they’re a little intimidated because they don’t know what they want to do with their lives, but Ruth discovers her talent for writing movie scripts/scenarios. (These are silent films in her time, so there’s no dialog for the “script.” Any dialog that the audience needs to understand would have been shown in text in the intertitles. I think that’s why they call this form of script a “scenario” in the book.) There is some awkwardness in the way the boys and girls in the story start looking at each other because they realize that they’re becoming young ladies and young men. They’re not used to thinking of themselves and each other in that way, and they’re developing crushes.

You won’t find this sort of thing much in the on-going Stratemeyer Syndicate book series, like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Those characters are frozen in age on purpose, and the Ruth Fielding series was part of the reason why. In early Stratemeyer Syndicate book series, like Ruth Fielding and the Rover Boys, the characters did age. They grew up, graduated from school, got married, and eventually, had kids of their own. The problem for the Stratemeyer Syndicate was that, when their characters got married and became parents themselves, they were starting to get too old to be teen detectives and young adventurers. Their child audiences wanted to read about kids like themselves or teenagers or young adults, not people who were more like their own parents. So, whenever characters started getting too old for the target audience, they would have to end that series and start a new one. After going through the Rover Boys and Ruth Fielding and some of their other popular series in this way, they realized that they could keep a book series going much longer if they just didn’t let the characters age.

That’s why Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys are frozen in age somewhere in their late teens or early 20s, and the books typically leave it vague which it is. It’s mostly important that readers know that the characters are young but old enough to travel and have adventures by themselves. Nancy Drew is not going to school, and if she takes any classes in individual books, she isn’t studying for a degree. If she did, her series would eventually end because she would graduate and move on to adult life. Similarly, the Hardy Boys are learning to be private detectives by working with their father, who is a private detective, but they will always be in that apprentice phase, so their series can continue. There are times when the characters date other characters or have crushes, but their romances don’t progress to anything serious because that would also age the characters. Every decade or so, the books in those series get revamped or the characters get a new, updated series that incorporates modern technology and culture, but the characters stay roughly the same age throughout. It’s basically what happens with new Scooby-Doo cartoon series, but with books, and the Stratemeyer Syndicate did it with their characters first.

Part of the reason that I wanted to read the Ruth Fielding books was that I knew the characters would age, and I also knew that she was a kind of prototype for Nancy Drew. The Nancy Drew series started around the time Ruth Fielding’s series ended, as a replacement for Ruth Fielding. Fortunately, we’re not at the end of Ruth Fielding’s series yet. The series doesn’t end with her boarding school graduation. It continues through her time in college and into her career in the movies.

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1911, 1987.

When Mary Lennox arrives in England following the deaths of her parents, people think that she is a peculiar child. She was born and raised in India. She is very thin, and her skin has a yellowish tint because she was frequently ill there. She also has a sour disposition, and it’s not just because she is grieving for her parents. Mary comes from a wealthy family, but she has been emotionally neglected for most of her life. She has not experienced real affection from anyone in her life, so she feels little affection for anyone. Her father worked for the British government in India, and between his work and his own illnesses, he never really had time for Mary. Her mother was a beautiful but frivolous woman who spent most of her time at parties or entertaining her friends. Her mother never really wanted a child at all, and she left Mary’s care and upbringing to an Indian nurse, with the instructions that the nurse keep Mary out of sight as much as possible. Her mother just didn’t want to bother with her. Because her mother didn’t want to be bothered with hearing Mary cry, even as a baby, the nurse and other household servants gave Mary anything she wanted and let her do as she pleased to keep her content. As a result, Mary became a spoiled and unmanageable child, and governesses who came to teach her never stayed very long because she was so temperamental.

Everything changed when Mary was nine years old. A cholera epidemic broke out, and Mary’s nurse was the first to die in their household. (Mary’s frivolous mother even admits, in Mary’s presence, that she was warned to leave the area weeks ago, but she wanted to stay for the sake of a dinner party. When the nurse dies, she realizes for the first time that she’s been a fool.) The other servants forgot about Mary in their panic, and people fled the area. Mary is discovered alone in the house by soldiers, who inform her that her parents died during the night. Mary is cared for temporarily by a clergyman and his family, but she doesn’t get along with the other children because she is spoiled and temperamental. She likes to play alone, pretending that she is planting a garden, so the other children tease her about being Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary from the nursery rhyme. Then, she is sent to England to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, at Mistlethwaite Manor. She knows nothing about her uncle or England, only that her uncle supposedly lives in an isolated house and never sees people.

The trip to England opens Mary’s eyes a little to the world and the ways of other people. She begins to notice that other children are treated differently from the way she’s always been treated. Other children seem to belong to adults who care for them, their mothers and fathers. Mary has never really felt like she belonged to anyone. In fact, many of her mother’s friends were completely unaware that she even had a child because Mary was always kept out of sight, and her mother had always lived like she wasn’t a mother at all. Mary has so little connection to her own parents that she doesn’t miss them at all when they’re gone. People keep saying that it’s such a shame that her mother was so beautiful and charming and that her daughter is so unattractive and unpleasant, but the adults also comment to each other that if Mary’s mother had spent any time with her or cared for her, Mary might be very different. Mary doesn’t think of herself as being unpleasant, although she often thinks other people are unpleasant.

On her arrival in England, she is met by her uncle’s housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, a no-nonsense woman. Mrs. Medlock tells her that her uncle’s manor is grand but gloomy and peculiar. It’s 600 years old, located near a moor, has over 100 rooms (most of them closed up and unused), is full of fine things, and has a garden around it. It all sounds very different from India, and Mary finds it hard to form an opinion about it. Mrs. Medlock is surprised at how unresponsive Mary is, and Mary says that there isn’t much point in her thinking or feeling anything because what she thinks and feels won’t change her situation. She has to go live at the manor whether she likes it or not. Mrs. Medlock admits that is true and that she doesn’t expect that Archibald Craven will pay much attention to her. He was married, and he and his wife loved each other very much, but his wife died, and that’s part of the reason why he lives like a hermit now. He also has a crooked back and doesn’t like for many people to see him. This begins to awaken some feelings in Mary. For the first time in her life, Mary feels a little sorry for her uncle, hearing about the sad death of his wife. It reminds her of something from a book. Mary begins to think that life at Mistlethwaite Manor sounds like it’s going to be lonely and dreary. Mrs. Medlock says that she will be expected to entertain herself most of the time.

Mary’s first impressions are indeed as lonely and gloomy as she expects. When she arrives, he is met by more servants, not her uncle. Mrs. Medlock is told that Mary’s uncle doesn’t want to see her and that she should be taken to her rooms. She is told that her uncle is leaving for London in the morning, and that she will be expected to keep to her rooms.

The only person who is pleasant to Mary is Martha, the house maid. Mary is surprised at Martha’s friendly and open manner because the servants in India always behaved in a servile way, even taking blows and abuse without complaint. When Mary sees the moor for the first time in daylight, Martha asks her if she likes it. Mary says that she doesn’t, but Martha tells her that it’s only because she’s not used to it and that she’ll like it better when she gets used to it. Mary asks Martha if she likes the moor, and Martha says she does. She describes to Mary all of the things that she likes about the moor, including the plants, the smells, the fresh air, and the sounds of the bees and birds. Martha waits on Mary a bit, but not in the way that the servants in India did. Mary is shocked to discover that there are some things that Martha expects her to do for herself, like dressing herself.

There is some racial talk at this point in the story, but the attitudes of the characters are somewhat mixed. Some of it seems to be inappropriate or derisive (mostly on Mary’s part), but some of it also seems friendly or interested in other races (mostly on Martha’s part). Martha says that things in India were different because there were more black people there inside of white people. The story uses the word “black”, apparently not making any distinction between people from Africa and people from India, like all non-white people are “black” by default. (My conclusion, from this part of the book and some later comments, is that Martha actually doesn’t know the difference.) Martha confesses that, when she first heard that Mary was coming from India, she might even be black herself. Mary is enraged at the idea that anyone would think of her as being “black” or a “native”, and she calls Martha a “daughter of a pig” because that’s what people in India would have thought of as one of the worst possible insults. Martha is unphased by this temper tantrum and just tells Mary that there’s no cause to be angry and that girls shouldn’t use language like this. Martha says that she wasn’t at all upset when she thought that a black girl might be coming to live at the manor because she’s never actually met a black person before and was looking forward to having that new experience. She says that she has nothing against black people and has heard that they are quite religious. Mary tells Martha that she doesn’t know anything about black people because they are only servants, not people, and she bursts into tears. Mary thinks this because the only non-white people she’s ever known were servants, and she doesn’t want to be thought poor and servile. To placate Mary, Martha admits that she doesn’t know much about these things, but Mary is the one who is about to get some new learning experiences.

Martha, who describes herself as being a somewhat common person, says that her mother always said that it’s a wonder that rich children don’t all turn out like fools because they don’t do many things for themselves, and she says that it will be good for Mary to learn how to do some basic things to take care of herself, like how to get dressed without help. Mary tells Martha that it was “not the custom” for children in India to dress themselves because that was only life she ever knew. The servants used to dress her and do things for her like she was a little doll instead of a person, and at first, Mary doesn’t know what to do or say when Martha speaks to her in a personal way, like a human being, or insists that she do things for herself. It helps that Martha comes from a large family with twelve children. She might know a lot about the world and other cultures, but she knows a lot about what to do with children and what children can be capable of doing, and these are things Mary needs to learn.

Mary is surprised when Martha tells her about one of her brothers, Dickon. Dickon has a way with animals, and he has tamed some wild animals, including a wild pony that he can now ride. Mary has never been allowed to have a pet before, although she has always wanted one. Mary has rarely been interested in anything, but Dickon begins to fascinate her.

Since there is little in the house to amuse a child, Martha insists that Mary go outside by herself and explore. Nobody will entertain Mary, so she must learn to play and amuse herself. For a start, Martha says that Mary can go look at the gardens. Intriguingly, Martha mentions that one of the gardens is locked. Mary asks why, and Martha says that the garden used to belong to Mrs. Craven and that Mr. Craven has kept it locked since she died ten years ago. He even buried the key somewhere. In spite of herself, Mary begins to be very curious about the locked garden and the reason why it is kept locked. As she explores outside, she discovers that the house is surrounded by several walled gardens, most of which have open doors in their walls. It is winter, so most of the gardens are bare. It is dreary, but Mary sees a robin and is cheered by its singing.

Mary is not accustomed to people liking her or to liking other people, but she begins making friends with the gruff old gardener, Ben Weatherstaff. He can whistle for the robin, and it comes to him, and that intrigues Mary. The gardener tells Mary about robins and about the friendly robin in particular. Seeing him interacting with the bird prompts Mary to mention that she is lonely, a revelation that surprises her. Her nurse didn’t like her, and she was never allowed to play with other children, so she has never had any friends. Ben Weatherstaff understands about loneliness because he doesn’t have much company, except for the birds. He is accustomed to plain speaking, and he comments that he and Mary have much in common, both being sour of disposition and plain looks. Mary is surprised at this candor and at the image it has given her of herself. The only people who interacted with her before were servants, who were paid to praise their employers. It never occurred to Mary before how other people really saw her and that her lack of human contact and affection is part of the reason why she feels so sour, behaves badly, and has trouble feeling emotional connections to other people because, to her, that was just normal life. The move to England is starting to show her that what she has always thought of as normal isn’t really, and her version of normal wasn’t even really healthy for her. She is touched when the robin acts like it wants to be friends with her, the first living thing that really seems like it wants to like her, and Mary finds herself liking a living thing for the first time, too.

It starts to become routine for Mary to explore the gardens every day, and she begins to grow healthier with the fresh air and activity. The cooler climate of England agrees with Mary more than the warmer climate of India, and her explorations and time alone awakens her mind and imagination. Martha’s practical mother hass Martha give Mary a gift of a skipping rope and tells her to have Mary spend as much time outside as possible. Mary begins to like Martha’s mother and Dickon from the stories Martha tells her about them. She’s not accustomed to liking people, and it surprises her that she can like someone just by description, without even seeing them. Martha poses a question to Mary about whether or not she likes herself, a question her mother once asked her when she was being critical of other people. Mary never thought about it before, but she has to admit that, now that she thinks about it, she doesn’t really like herself, and she can now see why other people didn’t like her before.

Mary begins to grow closer to Martha, who is also lonely, in her own way. She misses her mother and all her brothers and sisters when she’s working at the manor, and the other servants make fun of her for her common speech and Yorkshire expressions. Mary doesn’t make fun of her speech because, after living in India, she understands that some people just speak different dialects and doesn’t consider it unusual to not understand everything a person says, so Martha doesn’t mind spending time with Mary and talking to her, answering her questions as best she can. It isn’t always easy because, as she admits to Mary, there are things about the house and Mr. Craven that she’s not allowed to talk about. Mr. Craven is a very private person, and Mrs. Medlock won’t let the servants gossip too much.

Mary asks Martha more about the locked garden and why Mr. Craven hates it. Martha says that she might as well know that he used to love it when Mrs. Craven was alive because the two of them tended it together and spent a lot of time there. There was a tree with a branch shaped like a seat, where Mrs. Craven liked to sit. One day, the branch broke, and Mrs. Craven was hurt so badly by the fall that she died the next day. Ever since, Mr. Craven can’t bring himself to enter the garden or even hear anybody talk about it.

Something that Martha refuses to explain to Mary is the mysterious crying noises that Mary sometimes hears. She makes excuses, like it’s the wind or another maid with the toothache, but Mary is sure that it’s a child crying inside the house. Mary tries to explore the house, but Mrs. Medlock stops her from poking around too much. It’s only outside that Mary is truly free to explore.

Then, while watching the robin the garden, Mary finds both the key to the locked garden and the door inside. At first, the old garden looks dead, but then, she finds some tiny growing things. Mary begins tending the garden herself, realizing that, if she weeds the garden, there will be more room for the plants to grow. She asks Martha some questions about plants and gardening, and Martha explains some things, saying that Dickon knows more about gardening. Martha is pleased by Mary’s new interest in gardening. She doesn’t know that Mary has gotten into the locked garden, but her mother said that it would do Mary good to have a little space to make a garden for herself. Without telling Martha her secret, Mary says that’s just what she wants to do. Martha helps helps Mary write a letter to Dickon, asking for his help getting gardening tools and seeds and getting her garden started.

When Mary finally meets Dickon, she lets him in on the secret of the locked garden, but she swears him to secrecy about it. Mary has come to identify with the garden because, like Mary herself, it’s been neglected for a long time. For ten years, it was left alone, and nobody cared whether it lived or died, but Mary cares. She is determined to help it live, and she doesn’t want anybody to stop her. Dickon also finds the secret garden fascinating, and he is willing to help tend it in secret. He shows Mary how to tell which plants are alive or dead, and he explains what they will need to do to restore the garden to its former glory.

Mr. Craven inadvertently gives Mary permission for her secret activities when he sees her for the first time, to check on how she’s doing. He apologizes to Mary for being a negligent guardian, admitting that he has forgotten to hire a governess for her. He is forgetful because his health is poor, but he says that he does care about her welfare. Mary begs him not to give her a governess right away because her health is improving from playing outside in the gardens. Mr. Craven admits that what she says agrees with advice that Martha’s mother has given him about caring for Mary, so he says that she may go without a governess for now and may spend as much time outside as she likes. He asks her if she would like any toys, dolls, or books, and Mary asks him if she can have some earth for planting things instead. Mr. Craven says that she reminds him of someone else, but he agrees that she can have any patch of earth that she likes, as long as it’s not being used for anything else. He is going to be traveling abroad for his health until next winter, so Mary knows that she will have plenty of time for working in the secret garden and Mr. Craven’s technical, if unknowing, permission.

The mystery of the crying that Mary sometimes hears is solved when she boldly investigates the sound one night and finds a strange boy, about her age. She asks him who he is, and he says that he is Colin Craven, Archibald Craven’s son. When Mary explains that Mr. Craven is her uncle, the two of them realize that they are cousins. Colin explains that people aren’t allowed to see him or talk about him because he is ill. His father worries that Colin will have a crooked back, like he does, and Colin doesn’t want anybody to see him like that. He admits to Mary that people used to take him places when he was younger, and people would stare at him and whisper about him, and he hated it. He could tell that people thought he looked sickly and that they were sorry for him. Colin thinks that he is too sickly to live to adulthood because he has heard people talking about the possibility of him having a lump on his back and the possibility of him dying when they think he couldn’t hear them or couldn’t understand. However, he has understood all of it from a young age, and it has always terrified him. He doesn’t even trust his doctor because his doctor is a relative of his fathers and stands to inherit the manor if Colin doesn’t live to adulthood. Colin can tell that the doctor is hoping that will happen. The doctor hasn’t actively tried to harm Colin, but he hasn’t been very much help, either.

Colin is every bit as spoiled as Mary was when she first arrived in England. Like Mary, he has been shut away from most people and looked after by servants, who give him anything he wants and do whatever he says because they feel sorry for him and because he throws fits when they don’t. His father rarely sees him because he looks like his mother, which makes him sad, and he fears that he will see Colin become deformed or sicken and die. In meeting Colin, Mary finds herself confronted by a child very much like herself, but it turns out that she’s more than a match for him. In fact, she’s exactly what Colin has needed, to the amusement of all the servants. She doesn’t give in to Colin’s imperiousness nor his hysterics. She offers him the reassurance that he has needed that he is not deformed nor likely to die when he admits to her what his real fears have been. She provides him companionship and also gives him new things to think about besides his worries. Because he rarely leaves his room, he doesn’t know anything about the secret garden, but after she has determined that he can be trusted to keep the secret, she tells him about it. Colin badly wants to see it, and Mary asks Dickon to help take Colin out to see the garden in his wheelchair. As the children enjoy and work in the garden, restoring it to life, it also offers new life to the neglected children. As the flowers grow and bloom, the children blossom, too.

You can also read it in your browser through Lit2Go, which also includes audio readings of each chapter. There have been many different printings of this book with different illustration. The edition I used for the pictures on this review was from 1987. It has been made into movies several times.

My Reaction

Benefits of Nature and the Power of Positive Thinking

I love the atmosphere of The Secret Garden! The old manor house is wonderfully old-fashioned and gloomy. Mary’s bedroom has tapestries on the walls, and the house is mysterious and maze-like inside and surrounded by walled gardens and the open moor. Like Mary at the beginning of the story, I’ve never lived anywhere with a moor, and Martha’s descriptions of the plants and smells of the moor helped.

One of the most prominent themes in the story is the love of nature. The children see miracles in nature, and they find their interactions with growing plants healing to their spirits and bodies. There is also a strong emphasis on the power of positive thinking. The children come to realize that many of their emotional and health problems stem from their negative thoughts, and they make a conscious effort to focus more on positive things, replacing old, negative habits with healthier ones. The improvements they experience in their lives and attitudes give them encouragement to keep working on improving their thinking habits.

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s thoughts on healing and the power of positive thinking come from a time in her life when she suffered from severe depression and “nervous prostration.” While struggling to recover from her emotional disorder, she researched Christian Science, metaphysics, New Thought, and spiritualism. The philosophies of the characters in the story seem to be an amalgamation of different philosophies and schools of thought, not strictly adhering to anything in particular. There isn’t anything particularly religious about the children’s thinking, which I think makes sense because these neglected children probably haven’t been schooled much in religion. The children’s thoughts seem to be based on bits and pieces that they’ve read or heard about from others and some pieces of Eastern philosophy from Mary’s time in India, along with some things which seem to be their own invention. Colin thinks that the healing he experiences and the power of nature are some form of magic, and he decides that he’s going to spend his life experimenting with this type of magic and telling others about his discoveries. I found this part of the story interesting because Colin’s scientific concepts of magic and magical experiments remind me of Gerald Gardiner and the origins of Wicca (this Timeline documentary on YouTube explains it – the part about his youth is 10:30 in – that’s the part that reminded me the most of this book). Gerald Gardner was ill as a child because he was an asthmatic. The climate in Britain, where his family lived, didn’t seem to suit him, so his parents arranged for him to travel with a nanny. He spent much of his youth living away from Britain, in areas with warmer climates. The change of climate helped him, but during his travels, he also developed an interest in ritual healing magic and folk remedies, which he also believed helped him, and he conducted magical experiments to perfect his rituals. He combined these ideas and experiments with his own research into spiritualism and philosophical systems to form Wicca. Gerald Gardner was born before The Secret Garden was written, but his magical experiments and promotion of the Wicca movement occurred decades after this book was written, in the 1930s and 1940s, so Frances Hodgson Burnett couldn’t have used him for inspiration. I think it’s more that he found inspiration from similar spiritualist and philosophical sources, and he also used the natural environment in dealing with a chronic illness, as the author and the characters in the book did.

I don’t really believe in the more magical/metaphysical aspects of this type of philosophy, but a person’s environment can have a very real effect on their emotional and physical health. In my list of Cottagecore books, I talked about how people found solace in nature during the stress of the coronavius pandemic, and people have sought comfort in nature and the countryside for other forms of stress for generations. It’s a theme that often appears in vintage children’s literature, which made assembling the list of books with Cottagecore themes easy. People are often calmed by environments with plants and rooms with windows that allow them to see the outside world because they feel more natural. The need to feel in touch with the natural world was something discussed in the documentary about Gerald Gardner. It seems to be a fundamental human need, although people may experience it in different ways or on different levels.

There are also some scientific reasons why a person’s environment and the amount of time they spend outdoors can influence their health. Colin thinks of his magical experiments as a form of science, but more measurable forms of science include temperature, humidity, and the influence of sunlight in producing vitamin D in the human body. It’s not as romantic to look at it from this point of view, but these things to make a real difference to a person’s health. Some people’s bodies seem better adapted to certain types of climate, and moving to a different environment can potentially improve their health, depending on what conditions they have. The reason why my family moved to Arizona from the Midwest was that my grandfather suffered from arthritis from a relatively young age, and he was told by his doctor that he would improve in a warm, dry climate. My mother was also frequently ill in the Midwest, and her doctor said that it was because the winters in Ohio were too long and the summers were too short, so she was vitamin D deficient. People absorb vitamin D through the skin from sunlight as well as food, so spending time outside regularly can help them absorb more vitamin D. (Don’t overdo the sun bathing. Some time in the sun is good and can give your vitamin D a boost, but too much can lead to sun burns and skin cancer. There are happy mediums.) After the move to Arizona, both my mother and grandfather improved in health because the climate was better for their health conditions, and both of them could spend more time outside throughout the year.

They’re not the only ones I know of who have experienced this. Arizona has also been a destination for people with asthma for decades because they also seem to benefit from a warm, dry climate with plenty of sunshine and outdoor activity. In the Timeline Documentary about Gerald Gardner, they mentioned that one of the things Gardner did for his health after he returned to live in England was to become a nudist. I wondered if part of that could have been to maximize the amount of exposed skin that could absorb vitamin D. From what I’ve read, there does seem to be a link between low levels of vitamin D and asthma, but I’m not a healthcare professional, so I can’t be completely sure. My knowledge of this sort of thing is mainly anecdotal.

In the story, Mary didn’t seem to do well in India’s hot climate, but she felt better in England, where the climate was cooler. (I wondered early in the book if it was partly because her parents had her dressed in fashionable English clothes that were unsuited to India’s environment, but the book doesn’t clarify that point.) In England, she spends more time outside, partly because she needs to find ways to entertain herself, and also because being outside feels more comfortable to her than it did in India, so she receives more of the benefits of outdoor, physical activity. It seems like the key is noticing what your body seems to need and finding an environment that supports those needs or making lifestyle changes that allow you to take better advantage of the environment where you are. Of course, if you’re dealing with an illness, you should discuss treatment and lifestyle with your doctor and follow their guidance.

Racial Issues

There are some racial issues in this book, as I described above. The characters in the story have some false notions about people from India, although I found it interesting that Martha, who has never met anyone from India or people from different races in general, seems more positive and open to the experience of meeting different types of people than Mary. Of course, Mary has met people from India before, so she’s not curious about them. She thinks that she knows what they’re like, but her attitude is colored by her dysfunctional upbringing and her overall negative view of life and people in general. Even though she speaks about the Indians she knew in a derogatory way, I notice that, as she and Colin begin healing, she draws on her knowledge of Indian mysticism. She didn’t like her life in India because she was unhealthy and unloved there, but it does seem to have left its mark on her.

I’m not sure whether different editions of this book have changed the parts about Mary’s racial attitudes or not, but I know that there are some simplified or abridged editions, for those who might enjoy the general story without dealing with the objectionable parts.

The Wouldbegoods

The previous book in the Bastable Children series, The Story of the Treasure Seekers, ended with the children and their father going to live with their “Indian uncle.” The uncle isn’t identified by name, but he is apparently their real uncle, and he had only recently returned from living in India in the previous book, when he invited the Bastables to come live with him at Christmas. Since then, he has been helping the children’s father with his business, and the children are once again going to school, but not boarding school because their father doesn’t believe in boarding schools. However, the six Bastable children are still motherless and not accustomed to being supervised much in their free time.

During the spring, the children of one of their father’s friends come to stay for a visit. The Bastable children don’t like the other children much at first because they seem too timid and too well-behaved. The imaginative Bastable children decide that what these other kids need is a good game of pretend to get them out of their shells. One of the Bastables’ favorite books is The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling, so they decide to make their own jungle and act out scenes from the book. They give their guests the book to read, pointing out parts that they want to act out, while they go set up the jungle. They use the garden hose to create a waterfall, and they haul a bunch of their uncle’s taxidermy animals out of the house to set the jungle scene. They also set loose some guinea pigs and a pet tortoise and cover their dog in coal dust so he can be a wolf. Their father’s friend’s son, Dennis (called Denny), starts really getting into the game, but his sister, Daisy, prefers just to read the book. Matters come to a head when the boys frighten Daisy too much with their tiger costumes, and she faints. It is at that moment that their father and uncle arrive with some friends, seeing the children all gathered around Daisy, whom they first fear has died of fright. Some of the boys are nearly naked, their skin covered in brown dye so they’ll look like Mowgli from the book (no modern children should dye their skin for a costume like that, and that should be something adults explain to them, if they read this book), the taxidermy animals are all wet from the hose, the coal-covered dog is on the sofa inside, and the tortoise and one of the guinea pigs are never seen again.

Naturally, the adults are angry at the situation, and the children admit that their game went too far. The uncle swats the boys with his cane (not the girls because it would be ungentlemanly to hit a girl), and all of the children are sent to their rooms and put on a temporary diet of bread and water as punishment. Their father briefly talks of the possibility of boarding school, which shocks the children because they know how he feels about it. What the adults decide to do instead is to send the children to the country for the summer. Their friend from the previous book, Albert’s uncle, is an author, and he has rented a house in the country, where he will be writing. He always appreciates the children’s imagination and playacting, and he agrees to take all eight children, both the six Bastables and Denny and Daisy. (Albert isn’t there, so he’s probably somewhere with his mother.) Of course, since Albert’s uncle (who is never identified by any other name) will be writing much of the time, readers can guess that the children will have little supervision in the country.

The old manor house that Albert’s uncle has rented is a fascinating place. It has a moat around it, and a secret staircase, although it’s not really secret anymore because people already know about it. The eight children immediately begin doing things wrong in the country because they don’t know what they’re supposed to do and what they aren’t supposed to do, and adults usually only tell them what they’re not supposed to do after they’ve already done it. They ring a bell that is only supposed to be rung in emergencies, and they play in some hay that the horses are supposed to eat. Then, the girls in the group bring up an idea they’ve had.

The girls are still feeling guilty over the earlier bad behavior that got them sent to the country in the first place, so they’ve decided that it’s time for them all to reform their characters. Daisy in particular suggests that they form a society to do it because she knows that when people are serious about undertaking a good cause, they form a society for it. The boys aren’t as enthusiastic about the idea of forming a society around just being good, which doesn’t sound very fun or interesting, but the girls talk them into it. Oswald wants to know how it will be organized and who will be in charge, so they begin setting out some rules. Basically, all of the children are in the society, and nobody is allowed to leave it without telling the others. As long as they are in the society, they must always try their best to be good, and every day, they must try to do some good deed, which they will record in special book. After a debate about the name of their society, they decide to call it the Society of the Wouldbegoods. They also decide that this society must be kept secret from the adults, which is a major reason why their efforts turn out the way they do.

The first evening after they form the society, the children are unusually well-behaved but glum because they’re working so hard to be good. Albert’s uncle notices their odd mood, but they can’t explain to him why they feel this way, and he doesn’t press them. They also quickly have trouble finding good deeds to do, especially ones that are fun or interesting.

Dicky’s first good deed effort is to try to fix a window that seems broken to him, but it turns out that he doesn’t understand the reason why the window is the way it is. Because he changes it, a milk pan accidentally falls out the window into the moat. Oswald decides that the only good deed they can do is to retrieve the milk pan and fix Dicky’s mistake. They immediately recruit the other children to help them drag the moat, but none of them really knows how to do that, and by the terms of the society, they can’t ask the adults or tell them what they’re
trying to do. The only thing they can find to use for dragging the moat is a bed sheet, which they ruin by getting it dirty and tearing it, and it still doesn’t help them retrieve the milk pan. Failing that, they decide to make a raft and use it to reach the pan. This works better, but when they reach for the pan, the raft overturns and dumps everyone in the water, and Dora hurts her foot badly on an old tin in the water. Fortunately, the cook sees them fall in the moat, and she hurries to get Albert’s uncle, who gets the boat from the boathouse and rows out to rescue the children. (Apparently, the kids didn’t know there was a boat before they built the raft.)

Their next good deed goes better, although they don’t entirely think of it as a good deed. The children become fascinated with some soldiers who are training nearby. They like to watch the soldiers as they ride by and have their drills and exercises. When they wave to the soldiers, the soldiers blow kisses to the girls, which gives them a thrill. The kids dress up as soldiers and ask Albert’s uncle if they can borrow the old armaments that are decorating the walls of the old manor house as their weapons, and he says yes. (Oh, Good Lord, why? Nothing bad happens to the kids because of those old weapons, and they apparently don’t damage any of the antiques, but given their track record, this was taking a real risk.) The soldiers are amused by the children, and the next time they pass by, they stop and take a rest with the children. The captain of the soldiers takes some time to explain the soldier’s weapons to the children and tells them that they will soon be sent to the front overseas. (This is way too early to be World War I, and they refer to the Southern Hemisphere, so I think they’re talking about the Second Boer War, which was happening while this book was being written and published.) Before the soldiers leave, the children decide that they want to give them a parting gift, so they get some money from their father and give each of the soldiers a pipe and some tobacco, because the soldiers were all smoking during their rest break. Modern children’s books wouldn’t have the kids encouraging their smoking habit, but in this turn-of-the-century book, the gift goes over well. Sadly, the children never see any of the soldiers again after they leave for the front and don’t know what happened to them. Still, they did something nice for the soldiers.

The children’s experiences with the soldiers sets up their next attempt at a good deed, with mixed results. Part of it gets very uncomfortable, but it has a happy ending. The children notice an older woman who also watches the soldiers and seems to get very emotional when she sees them. They find out that her son is also a soldier who is already at the front, and she is very worried about him. The children decide that they should do something nice for her, so they try to weed her garden without permission. The problem is that the children
don’t know how to tell the difference between vegetables and weeds, so they also pull up her turnips and cabbages. The woman is angry with them, but they apologize and say that they’ll talk to their father about making things right with her.

Then, the children have to bring her a postcard addressed to her that was accidentally delivered to them with the mail for the manor house. They don’t even read it ahead of time although they could because they don’t want to do anything else wrong. This is a rare serious moment in this series because the postcard is from the army, and it says that the woman’s son is dead. The woman is very upset, and the children sympathize with her.

Then, the children decide that they can do something else nice for the woman by making a tombstone for her son. They know that he must have been buried at the place where he was killed on the battlefield, so he won’t have a normal tombstone in England, and they think it would be nice to make a memorial for him. The concept of making a memorial for someone who is buried elsewhere is actually a real thing. It’s called a cenotaph (although I don’t think these children know that word because they keep calling it a “tombstone”), and they are commonly done for soldiers who are killed overseas and buried there or whose bodies can’t be retrieved. (The musician Glenn Miller has one because his plane went down in the English Channel during WWII, and his body was never recovered.) Making a memorial of this type for the grieving family of a soldier would be a nice gesture, if it was done well and with the input of the soldier’s family. The kids do the best they can, carving a wooden tombstone and inscribing a beautiful message on it, but they don’t tell the soldier’s mother about it until after they’re finished. At first, the older woman thinks that they’re making fun of her grief, but Alice persuades her that’s not the case and convinces her to take a look. They decorate the tombstone with flowers and offer a lovely message about the soldier’s service to his country. The soldier’s mother is touched, and she appreciates the sentiment, although she has the children move the memorial to a more private spot. She likes it that the children continue to put flowers on the memorial, and she becomes friendly with them.

This episode also has a happy ending because it turns out that the reports of the soldier’s death were wrong. He was actually missing and injured, not killed. His mother and the children learn the truth when he comes home and sees the children decorating his “tombstone.” Fortunately, he is amused by the memorial and the touching sentiment expressed by the children, and his mother is overjoyed at his return. The children celebrate by chopping up the tombstone and using it for a bonfire.

Around this time, the children realize that they don’t have very many good deeds to record in their book, so they decide that they can make notes about any good thing that they notice someone else doing. Nobody is allowed to write about themselves or to persuade someone else to write something about them because bragging about their own good deeds wouldn’t be good or noble. It’s a fortunate decision because many of the children’s other adventures in the country aren’t directly related to the Society of the Wouldbegoods or their good deed efforts, but they count some of the things that certain children do during their adventures as good deeds (and Oswald gripes about things he did which he thought should have been counted but weren’t).

One day, the children are sent out on a long walk because Albert’s uncle has a headache and the children are making too much noise in the house. They decide to check out a tower that has some spooky local legends about it because it contains a tomb about halfway up the tower. The others credit Denny for a good deed because he offers to go first into the spooky tower. (This tower is somewhat based on a real landmark, but the
author took some creative liberties with it. The man who is supposedly entombed there, Richard Ravenal, isn’t a real person. He was created for this book, but he gets a mention in the lore of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.) The children have a frightening encounter there with a beggar. They give him a coin as a good deed, but he sees that the children have more money with them, so he locks them in the tower from the outside, telling them that he won’t let them out until they give him the rest. Oswald notices that there are bolts on the inside of the tower door as well as the outside, so he quickly locks them to make sure that the beggar can’t get inside. This turns out to be a good decision because, when the children toss the rest of their money to him, it isn’t as much as he thought they had, and he pounds angrily on the tower door. (Oswald thought that the others should have counted his locking the door as a good deed because it saved them, but they decide not to because it was really more “clever” than “good.” Oswald thinks that’s an unfair technicality.) The children are safe inside the spooky old tower until the beggar leaves, and they are able to signal to someone else to unlock the door from the outside. This incident wasn’t the children’s fault (for a change), but the adults insist that, from this point on, they take the dogs with them when they go very far from the house.

The children make some other attempts at doing good deeds on purpose, but again, they go horribly awry because the children don’t know what they’re doing, and they don’t talk to anybody else about their ideas before they do them. After they cause a disaster that ruins a fishing contest and wrecks a barge full of coal, which costs their father a lot of money to fix, Albert’s uncle explains to them the full consequences of what they did and how much trouble they caused for a lot of people. The children feel terrible about it, and Alice starts to cry. She doesn’t fully reveal the existence of their society to Albert’s uncle, but she does say that they’ve been working so hard at being good and doing good things, but nothing they do works out. She says that they must be the worst children in the world and dramatically says that she wishes they were all dead. Everyone is shocked by this, and Albert’s uncle calmly tells her that they’re not the worst children in the world. He says that he knows they’re all feeling bad about what they’ve done, and he does want them to feel badly because they have seriously caused some real problems, and he doesn’t want them to do these things again. However, he says that he doesn’t want them to give up on the idea of being good because that’s something that they will learn better how to do over time. Also, he notes that, in all the time he’s known then, none of them have ever done anything intentionally mean or wicked, they’ve never lied about what they’ve done, and they’ve always been sorry when things have gone wrong. Being truthful and genuinely regretful for causing harm are worthy qualities.

Oswald feels bad abut that part because he has realized that there’s one thing he’s done that caused a disaster, and he hasn’t admitted it to the others yet. What he did was unintentional, and he didn’t know the incident was his fault at first, but he’s been trying to work up the courage to confess since he realized what he did. Albert’s uncle’s kind words make Oswald confess right away, and Albert’s uncle is appreciative of his honesty for that, too. The others call credit Oswald’s confession as a good deed. He doesn’t think it is, but they say it counts because it was a difficult thing for him to do, and technically, he didn’t have to do it. At that point, nobody had guessed that he was responsible for one of the problems, and if he had kept quiet, it wasn’t likely that anybody would have found out. He had been honest because he simply wanted to be honest and do the right thing, even knowing that people might get mad at him or punish him for what he did.

Albert’s uncle forgives the children, although he still expects them to learn from their misadventures. At this point, the children also begin to consider just how far the Society of the Wouldbegoods will go. So far, it hasn’t been a great success, but they do appreciate what Albert’s uncle says about not giving up on the idea of trying to be good. Still, the children (especially Oswald), decide that it’s time to set an ending point for the society. They decide that each of them will try to do one more good deed of some kind, and when each of them has
one more deed to their name to put in their book, they’ll dissolve the society. From that point on, if any of them want to be good, they’ll do it on their own, when and how they choose do it. (The boys in the group are particularly relieved at this idea, although they’ve all been feeling some strain from the society.)

The children’s escapades still continue, some related to good deed efforts and some just part of summer activities that they do for fun. They try to hold a circus with some farm animals, which get loose. There’s a bonfire that gets out of control and burns a farmer’s bridge (although the children put it out themselves before it gets worse). Dora finds a baby who’s been left alone in his carriage and kidnaps/cares for it. At first, she thinks that maybe he’s the long-lost heir of a noble house who was kidnapped by gypsies, like in books,
and has been abandoned, so she must adopt him and care for him until he can be reunited with his family. Like many of the children’s good deeds, it has mixed results, but this one ends up being more on the side of good. She shouldn’t have just taken the baby from its carriage, and he technically wasn’t kidnapped until she took him. However, it turns out that his nanny was neglecting him, leaving him all alone while she flirted with her boyfriend. When the adults discover that the children have the baby and why they have him, the nanny’s neglect is exposed, and she gets fired.

A couple of the boys later buy a pistol, which they make all the children promise not to tell the adults about. (I thought at first that it was a toy pistol, but it apparently fires real bullets. God only knows why anybody thought it would be a good idea to sell these boys a real gun.) The boys were thinking at first that it would be handy to have if there was a burglar, but one of the boys accidentally shoots a fox with it and kills it. The other children, although they were pretending to be fox hunters, are upset at finding a real dead fox and bury it with a proper funeral before they know that it was one of the other boys who killed it. They get into some trouble over it from the master of fox hounds. The boy who shot the fox explains that, at the time he shot it, it was caught in a metal trap, and it bit him when he tried to let it loose, which is when he accidentally shot it. Albert’s uncle confiscates the pistol because none of this would have happened if the boys hadn’t been playing with a gun, and Oswald thinks that it would serve him right if they really did get a burglar in the house and were unable to fight him off. (I’m pretty sure that they’d be more likely to accidentally shoot one another or one of their own dogs before they shot anybody else.)

Toward the end of the summer, Albert’s uncle agrees to be a host for an antiquities society that wants to see the old manor house and investigate a nearby site for possible Roman ruins. Albert’s uncle is beside himself when he discovers that, rather than being host to a small club, more than 100 people show up to accept his invitation to have tea before touring the grounds. The children, inspired by a book called The Daisy Chain, decide that it would be amusing to bury some pottery that they made themselves, just so the antiquarians will definitely have something to find. That part turns out fine because the antiquarians can easily tell the pottery made by the children from actual antiquities, and they are amused by the children’s “relics.” The problem is that the children also decide to bury some pottery they found in the library along with their own pottery, and those were real relics. The antiquarians get excited when they find those, but Albert’s uncle realizes that those pieces of pottery belonged to the real owner of the rented manor house. The children have to go to the head of the antiquarian society to admit what they’ve done to get the antique pottery back.

From there, the children are inspired by something a tramp says to them to open up a stand offering free drinks (lemonade and tea), but it goes wrong when some people take advantage of their kindness. They also take part in some war games without realizing that it’s all a game or training exercise. Then, while acting out the pilgrimage from The Canterbury Tales, they meet a kind lady, who turns out to have a romantic past with Albert’s uncle! They’re not sure that they like the idea of Albert’s uncle getting married, but they’re willing to try to help him reconnect with his lost love if it will make him happy and for goodness’s sake!

My Reaction

This book reminds me of a couple of more modern books, The Adventures of the Red Tape Gang by Joan Lowery Nixon from the 1970s and Why Did the Underwear Cross the Road? by Gordon Korman from the 1990s, which are both books about kids trying to do good deeds with unintentional and hilarious results.

Just as in the first book in the Bastable Children series, much of what the children do in this story is due to the children’s naivety and imagination and a lack of adult supervision. Oswald makes it a point to say that they were not entirely neglected by the adults while they were in the country. Although Albert’s uncle frequently had to spend time writing, he did spend plenty of time with the children, and their father and Denny’s father came to see them regularly, along with some other adults. The children enjoyed spending time with the adults and doing things with them, but Oswald doesn’t describe much of what they did with the adults because the things they did on their own were the most interesting. (In the sense of dangerous and disastrous, but also exciting.) At various times in the story, they meet up with adults who are happy to talk to the children and explain things about their business or how things work, but the children also like acting on their own initiative, without asking adults for advice or opinion or taking time to really prepare for things they want to do, like when Oswald didn’t want to take the time to actually train an animal to do something when the children decided that they wanted to have a circus with animals. The children’s innocence and ignorance are played for comedy, but child readers would probably appreciate the children’s sense of independence. Few modern children would be given even half of the opportunities the Bastables have to do things on their own and cause as much trouble as the Bastables do.

Racial Issues

In the first book of the series, I talked about some racial issues in the story, and there are also issues with racial language and attitudes in this book. I don’t know whether or not this book has been reprinted with altered language, like the first one. Some of the incidents in this book might take more editing than the first one, like where the kids darken their skin for acting out scenes from The Jungle Books or giving pipes and tobacco to the soldiers.

There is an instance of the use of the n-word in this book, and this time, it’s something Oswald says rather than something the adults say. Basically, he was talking about hard the children were working, and he was trying to imply that they were working like slaves, but instead of saying the word “slaves”, he says the n-word. Children’s word choice is influenced by the books they read reads and the things adults say around them, and we’ve already established that adults around them use the n-word in a casual way.

Again, this brings up the question of whether or not the author herself this that using the n-word is acceptable or if she’s just trying to portray the way some people around her talked. In a way, I think she does address this topic indirectly, although that might be unintentional. There is a point in the story when the children talk about unpleasant things found in poetry, like death and the devil, and they note that a person doesn’t always have to like the things they read or write about. It struck me that, perhaps, the author was trying to explain that she doesn’t always like, advocate, or believe in things that occur in her stories. This conversation isn’t directly related to the use of the n-word, so I’m not sure whether that would be one of the things that the author didn’t really like or not. It might have been a more general notion, like when authors write about sad things that happen or the things the children do that they really shouldn’t. It is a reminder, though, that characters are not exactly the same as their characters, and they may differ in important ways. The nature of the characters suits the story, but may not be a reflection of the author’s life and attitudes.

There is also one instance of an anti-Catholic attitude, but it’s played for humor. The kids are on a tour of Canterbury Cathedral, and their tour guide says, “This is the Dean’s Chapel; it was the Lady Chapel in the wicked days when people used to worship the Virgin Mary.”

(I’ve heard this accusation about Catholics worshiping the Virgin Mary before, all too many times, mostly from my Protestant grandmother. I belong to a family of mixed religions, and I had experiences like this from a very young age. Catholics don’t worship Mary. Catholics honor Mary, which is different. We also have a sense that those who were bound together by faith never lose that spiritual connection to the living members of the church when they die, so living Catholics can still communicate with the departed spiritually through prayer, which is what the whole thing about praying to saints is about. It’s about communication and spiritual support rather than worship. Catholics don’t have to do this if they don’t want to, but it’s always an option, if they feel the need of spiritual support from another soul who might understand their situation, because there is a sense that the spiritual connection is always there. Mary and the other saints are not substitutes for God or Jesus but rather part of an extended spiritual family that supports its other, younger, and more vulnerable living members in a spiritual way as they all, living and dead, serve and worship the same God. I suppose a simpler way of putting it is the concept that those who love us never leave us, or as C. S. Lewis put it in the The Chronicles of Narnia, once a king or queen of Narnia, always a king or queen of Narnia. Some bonds are unbroken by death. The punchline to the tour guide’s comment is in H. O.’s response.)

When the children think about the connotations of changing the name of the chapel from Lady Chapel to Dean’s Chapel because of changing worship styles, H. O. speculates, “I suppose they worship the Dean now?” You can imagine how well that question is received. Yeah, do they worship the Dean, or is the Dean just someone they’ve honored by naming something after him? You tell me if there’s a difference.

War and Soldiers

The scenes with the soldiers and war games remind me of something that the author couldn’t have known when she wrote the book. In the following decade, Britain would be involved with World War I (called the Great War before WWII), and many boys, like the kids in this story, would end up going to war. Oswald thinks that it would be exciting to be a soldier, but real war isn’t a game, and he might have many of his illusions shattered. Knowing what I know about this generation’s future, I have some real concern for the children in this story. There’s a very real risk that they could be killed in battle, just as the young soldier in this book that they built that tombstone for in this story could have died in the war that was being fought during his time. This story doesn’t go that dark because the Bastable Children series is a humor series, but there are moments of real sentimentality in the stories. E. Nesbit couldn’t have known about the war that was coming, but she did know about wars that existed during her lifetime. Introducing the children to the soldiers in this story introduces some serious concepts to the children, who are largely naive about many aspects of life, still thinking of many dangerous things as sources of excitement and adventure. We don’t know what happened to any of the soldiers the children befriended, but the knowledge that the old woman’s son almost died brings it to the children’s awareness that death is a very real possibility in that type of “adventure.” It’s a lesson that will accompany them into their future.
