The Mysterious Horseman

This book is part of a loose series of books by Kate Waters, showing child reenactors at living history museums, having adventures in the roles of the characters they play. While most of the books are set in Colonial times at Plymouth and Colonial Williamsburg, the setting for this story is the Connor Prairie living history museum in Indiana, which shows life in a small town in the 19th century.

The story centers around a boy named Andrew McClure. He is the only one of his siblings left still living with their parents. His older sister is now married, and his baby brother died of an illness during the last year. His family is still grieving for his little brother. Andrew’s best friend is a boy named Thomas Curtis, who lives nearby, and Andrew works part time at a local inn to earn some money.

One day, while Andrew is doing some sweeping at the inn, he overhears some men talking in the taproom. He doesn’t hear their entire conversation, but he hears them talking about a mysterious rider without a head who chased a schoolmaster. Andrew is startled, and he wonders if that has something to do with the new schoolmaster who is supposed to arrive in town.

When Andrew is done with his work, he goes to the schoolhouse, and he finds his friend Thomas and Thomas’s sister, helping the new schoolmaster to clean the schoolhouse and prepare it for lessons to start. Andrew wants to talk to Thomas about what he overheard at the inn, but the schoolmaster only wants to talk to the boys about lessons.

Later, Andrew does have a chance to talk to Thomas, and both of the boys are spooked by the idea of a headless rider. They even think that they hear the rider on the road! The frightened boys go see Thomas’s father, the blacksmith, and tell him about the rider. Fortunately, the blacksmith knows what the men were talking about, and he can settle the boys’ fears.

I didn’t know about this book until I was looking up Kate Waters’s books for my younger cousins. I was surprised because Kate Waters’s living history museum books are mostly set on the East Coast or focus on the Colonial era. This 19th century book set in Indiana somewhat departs from the theme and has a different feel from the other Kate Waters books, but I enjoyed it. I’ve been to Connor Prairie because I have relatives in the area, and I enjoyed my visit. It’s been years since I’ve been there, so I didn’t immediately recognize the setting. When I read the explanation in the back of the book, I was fascinated to realize that I had visited that location before.

Andrew has a fascination for life on the frontier because he often watches people pass through his town on their way further west, and he daydreams about going west himself. His family is also still coming to terms with the death of his little brother, so the subject of death is still on Andrew’s mind. The deaths of children due to illness were sadly common in the 19th century and on the frontier, and the mourning in Andrew’s family adds to the melancholy and spooky atmosphere of the story.

Most adults and older children will probably recognize what the men at the inn where actually talking about when they were discussing the headless rider who chased the schoolmaster. When the boys talk to Thomas’s father, he immediately recognizes the story as the plot of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, originally published in 1820, about 16 years before the story in this book is suppose to take place. The men at the inn were just discussing the plot of the story, not something that they saw on the road themselves.

The Boxcar Children

It’s June, and the Aldens are trying to decide what to do for the summer. Benny says that his friend Max remarked that the Aldens always seem to find something exciting everywhere they go, but Max doesn’t think anybody could find anything exciting about the little village where his father likes to go fishing. Max says that it’s a tiny and isolated village on an island with little to do, and he doubts even the Aldens would find anything interesting or exciting there. The only people who usually go there are summer visitors going fishing, like Max’s dad. Mr. Alden has been thinking over other plans for the summer, but he says that, if the children want to take a short visit to his village, called Port Elizabeth, to test out Max’s theory of how boring the place is and see if they can find something exciting about the place, it’s fine with him. The Aldens think that purposely visiting a dull town and seeing what they can find there sounds interesting by itself, so they decide to go.

When they arrive, they find that the place is as small as Max described. It doesn’t take them long to explore the town. There is a small store, but it’s well-stocked with all the food they need. There’s a big old house that seems to be abandoned, and there’s a quaint little schoolhouse with a bell and an odd-shaped chimney.

The people of the town seem suspicious of them at first. They don’t get many outsiders coming to their town, and they can tell immediately that the Aldens are rich because of their car and their clothes. However, because the Aldens are friendly and polite visitors, people gradually begin warming up to them.

The Aldens learn that most people in town work for the local sardine factory. There aren’t many other job prospects in the area, and they don’t have access to higher education or even outside sources of information, like television, so the local kids don’t aspire to much more. Local kids work, too.

One day, a pair of twins approach Violent while she’s painting a picture and start talking to her about painting. They’ve never really owned any proper art supplies themselves, only some crayons, but they’ve been interested in learning to paint since a professional artist came to town to paint the seaside. They also tell Violet and her siblings that the town has had trouble keeping teachers. Most people don’t want to stay in the town very long because it’s so small, and there’s so little to do. Because they change teachers so often, the kids never really advance much in their classes. Every teacher basically keeps starting over in their lessons. The last one told them to study this summer to make progress and prevent themselves from forgetting what they’ve learned, but the local kids don’t really know how to study or what to study, and they’ve never had a teacher who taught any of the really fun subjects, like art.

The local kids ask the Aldens if they could help them study this summer, and the Aldens get the idea to set up their own summer school in the local schoolhouse. They speak to the lady who owns the schoolhouse, Miss Gray, and she gives her permission. The Aldens recognize her as a famous author, but now, she lives like she’s a recluse in her big, old house. She also asks the Aldens whether or not they know a blond man who smiles a lot, but the Aldens don’t know who she’s talking about.

The people in town don’t have much money, and they save what they can in cash rather than using a bank. However, something odd has happened recently because a man has bought a couple of coins from some of the locals for more than the face value of the coins. The locals don’t know why he was willing to do this, but they’re always grateful for anything extra they can get. The locals have started calling this blond man “the money man” because he not only buys coins but also various other odd, old things that most of the locals think of as junk. They don’t know why he wants these things, but they’re just glad he’s willing to pay something fro them. Mr. Alden is very interested in this man and wants to know more about him.

The Alden kids buy some art supplies and school supplies so they can get started with lessons for their summer school. Even though they provide some supplies and have some textbooks in the schoolhouse, they find that there are things they need because previous teachers in town haven’t left some of the things they need, like easy reading books. They improvise as best they can, with Benny helping the kids in class write simple stories about themselves and their lives to use for reading lessons. The local children talk more about the “money man” and how he trades them new toys for old ones they’ve had. The children think that’s great, but the Aldens are suspicious about the “money man’s” apparent generosity.

It isn’t long before Mr. Alden and the children have an encounter with the blond “money man.” The man, called Freddie, notices that Mr. Alden has a rare penny on his watch chain and offers to buy it. He explains that he deals in coins and antiques. Mr. Alden can tell that Freddie is knowledgeable but slick when it comes to buying collectible items. Mr. Alden refuses to sell the man his coin or his watch, and after he leaves, the children tell their grandfather what they know about his dealings with the local people.

It has become apparent that Freddie is cheating the locals, buying antiques and collectibles from them while either paying them much less than what they’re really worth or trading them for newer but cheaper items. Because this town is relatively isolated and the people don’t have much money, they’ve spent generations keeping and reusing antique items without knowing how valuable they’ve become. The local children are thrilled when he lives them newer and more colorful toys in exchange for their old ones, because they don’t know how much their antique toys are worth. Technically, Freddie hasn’t done anything illegal because the people he’s been buying from and trading with have agreed to the deals so far and been satisfied with what they’ve gotten, but that’s only because they don’t know that they could have gotten much better deals from someone else. Freddie’s dealings aren’t really fair or ethical, and Mr. Alden and the local author have become concerned that he may take even bigger advantages of the local people than he already has.

When some valuable collectors’ books disappear from the little village’s neglected library, the author, Miss Gray is convinced that Freddie is responsible. How can they catch him and prove to everyone what he’s been doing?

As with many of the earlier Boxcar Children books, there is an element of mystery but more emphasis on the adventure and the kids’ summer experiences than on the mystery. We have an obviously suspicious right at the beginning, and we have a sense of what he’s doing that’s a problem pretty quickly. This is one of those mysteries where the protagonists have an obvious villain and a good understanding of what’s going on, but the mystery is about getting the evidence and proving it. Part of the issue at first is that duping people into trading things with him or selling them to him for less than what they’re really worth is more unethical than illegal because, as long as the participants are satisfied with the trade and willingly agree to it, it’s difficult to prove that they were deceived. It’s when the villain crosses the lines and actually steals something nobody agreed to give him or sell him that they can really start to nail him for what he’s been doing.

Part of the solution felt a little contrived because it turns out that the villain has been hiding his ill-gotten gains in a location that is right under the children’s noses, and there is something special about the place that allows them to watch the villain without being observed. It’s an interesting set-up, but I usually prefer a more traditional style mystery where there’s more for the amateur detectives to figure out.

Thimble Summer

Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright, 1938, 1966.

It’s summer, and Garnet is a 9-year-old girl living on a farm with her parents and brothers in a rural community in Wisconsin. The story is episodic, with each chapter describing things that happen to Garnet over the course of one magical summer when she found a silver thimble down by the river. Garnet thinks that the thimble itself is magic, but maybe the magic is just in the happy summer adventures that follow.

The book is a Newbery Medal winner. It’s available to borrow and read for free online through Internet Archive (multiple copies, including one in Chinese).

The Silver Thimble

It’s been hot and rainless, and the crops are in danger of being ruined if they don’t get some rain soon. It’s a real worry because, if the crops are bad, Garnet’s family won’t be able to pay their bills. When Garnet and her brother Jay go swimming in the nearby river, Garnet finds a silver thimble. It’s a lucky find, and Garnet becomes convinced that the thimble is magic and that something wonderful is about to happen. Jay thinks that’s silly, but that night, the rain they’ve so badly needed comes! Garnet and Jay are so overjoyed with the rain that they go out running in the rain in the middle of the night, until they are frightened by lightning striking something, and their mother calls them back.

The Coral Bracelet

Garnet’s best friend is a girl name Citronella, who lives nearby. Citronella’s great-grandmother lives with her, and she tells the girls stories about what it was like when she was young. She tells them about Indians (Native Americans) who would sneak into her family’s house in bad weather to get warm and leave them presents as thanks. (I don’t know if any Native Americans ever did this in real life, but she says it like it really happened.) Then, she tells the girls about a special coral bracelet that she wanted at the general store when she was young and some foolish risks she took to get it.

The lucky thing that happens in this chapter is that Garnet’s father gets a government loan to build a new barn.

The Lime Kiln

The family needs to make lime for building their new barn. The kiln needs to burn for three days straight, and they all need to take turns tending it, day and night. Jay and Garnet are allowed to stay up all night there with their father. Friends help them, and neighbors come to visit and talk with them. Garnet brings along a picnic with sandwiches and apple pie that they eat at midnight.

The Stranger

While they’re tending the kiln, a strange boy comes along and asks them for food. His name is Eric, and he’s a parentless boy who travels around and makes his living from odd jobs. He tells them about his life and travels, and Garnet’s father hires him to help the family build the new barn.

Locked In

Garnet likes having Eric at the farm, but she’s also a little jealous that Jay wants to spend more time with Eric now than with her. Garnet starts spending even more time with Citronella, and the two girls build a tree house together. The girls tell stories in their tree house, and because it’s going to rain again, Garnet suggests that they go to the library in town. They get so engrossed in their books that they lose track of time and get locked in the library. Garnet thinks this is a fabulous adventure until Citronella points out that it’s Saturday, and the library is closed on Sunday. If they can’t find a way out, they could be there for the rest of the weekend!

Journey

It’s harvest time, and everyone is occupied in picking crops and canning foods. Garnet helps, and she is temporarily put in charge of the threshing machine. Unfortunately, she falls asleep and lets the straw stack pile up until it falls over and makes a mess. Eric tells her not to worry about it, but Jay yells at her and tells her that she had no business helping out as a girl and that she should be at the house with the women. Garnet is so upset at the way Jay has been critical of her lately that she decides to run away and hitchhike around, like Eric used to do.

“As a Ragpicker’s Pocket”

Garnet is still running away, and she takes a bus to the next town. By the time she has explored the town and looked at all the store windows, she isn’t so upset and can see the funny side of what happened with the thresher, and she’s about ready to go home. She buys a few things for her family at the dime store and a hot dog to eat. Then, she has a horrible realization: she’s out of money. How is she going to get back home?

Fair Day

Garnet goes to the fair with her family and neighbors, and she enters her pig, Timmy, in a contest. Timmy was the runt of his litter, but Garnet has taken special care of him, and she thinks that he has a good chance of winning a prize.

Ice-Cream Cones and Blue Ribbons

Garnet and Citronella enjoy the wonders of the fair while Garnet is waiting for the pig contest. They spot the lady sword-swallower darning her socks, they ride the rides, and they have snacks. The girls get stuck on the Ferris wheel when it stops working, and Garnet worries about getting down in time for the judging of the pig contest.

The Silver Thimble

The silver thimble hasn’t been mentioned since the first chapter, but when Garnet looks back on all the good things that have happened this summer, she’s still sure that it’s magic. All the good things that have happened started right after she found it. She shows the thimble to Eric, and the kids talk about what they want to do with their futures.

My Reaction

This story is more like a collection of stories, some of which continue each other. The book is somewhat episodic, leading up to the fair at the end of the summer. The stories are pretty gentle, slice-of-life adventures. Eric has had a hard life, but he doesn’t want to dwell on it too much, and things improve for him when he decides to stay with Garnet’s family. There are hints that Eric might marry Garnet someday, and the two of them might stay on the family’s farm. Eric has had enough of traveling in his young life, and he wants to be a farmer and thinks that he would like to save up money and buy land near the family’s farm. Jay wants to be a sailor or something else that will let him travel and see the world, although he thinks that he might want to come back to the farm when he’s done traveling and farm it with his father and Eric.

The book fits with the Cottagecore genre, and it would make good bedtime reading. Foodies will enjoy the mentions of old-fashioned treats, like apple pie, griddle cakes, and vinegar candy. Garnet also imagines that each of the kitchen things have their own personalities.

I liked Garnet’s name, which is very unusual in the early 21st century. Citronella is an even more unusual name, but I prefer Garnet. I think it’s charming, and it’s one of the less-common gem names used for girls. In the story, Garnet mentions that the librarian frequently gets her name wrong because gemstone names are popular in her time and area. There are other girls in town named Ruby, Pearl, Opal, and Beryl, and the library usually calls her Ruby, the most popular of the gemstone names.

There are some stereotypical mentions of Native Americans in the story. They’re not derogatory, and they’re minor parts, but there were a couple of things that struck me as being a little stereotypical, like the kids saying that they’re Comanche Indians doing a rain dance when they’re running around in the rain. I also didn’t care for the way the characters kept pointing out which people were “fat” or “fleshy.” They’re not really shaming these characters, just sort of remarking, but I just felt like it was rude and unnecessary. You see this sometimes in older children’s books. Fortunately, none of the fat characters are considered bad characters in this story, as they sometimes are in other books. There aren’t really any bad characters in the story in general. Jay is annoying at times and says things that put down his sister and girls in general in a bratty, macho kind of way, but nobody in the story is a villain.

Stories of Rainbow and Lucky: Handie

Stories of Rainbow and Lucky

I’ve been wanting to cover this series for some time. It’s an unusual series from the mid-19th century, written on the eve of the American Civil War, by a white author with a young black hero. Rainbow is a teenage black boy who, in this first installment of the series, is hired by a young carpenter, who is only a few years older than he is, to help him with a job in another town. The entire series is really one long story, like a mini-series, and each book is an installment in the story. 

This first book focuses mostly on the young, white carpenter Handie Level, why he needs to take this job in another town, and why he decides to hire Rainbow to come with him. The rest of the series follows the two young men, particularly Rainbow, through their adventures, learning life lessons, even dealing with difficult topics like racism. (Lucky is a horse, and Lucky enters the story later.) It’s unusual for this time period for black people to be the heroes of books and for topics like racism to be discussed directly. It’s also important to point out that our black hero is not a slave, he is not enslaved at any point in the series, and the series has a happy ending for him. People don’t always treat him right, but he does have friends and allies, and he manages to deal with the adversity he faces and builds a future for himself.

I want to explain a little more about the background of this book, but it helps to know a couple of things before you begin. First, the author was a minister who had written other books and series for children, Jacob Abbott. He had a strong interest in human nature and the details of everyday life, so his books are interesting for students of history. He explains some of the details of 19th century life that other people of his time might have taken for granted, and he also liked to explain the reasons why his characters behave as they do in the stories, exploring their personalities and motivations. Second, as part of the author’s character studies and also just for the fun of it, he made many of his character names puns that offer hints to the characters’ roles or personalities, so keep an eye out for that when new characters are introduced. Some of these pun name or nicknames are obvious, but others require a little explanation. Rainbow’s employer, Handie Level, is a level-headed carpenter who’s good with his hands, so the meaning of his name is pretty straight-forward. “Rainbow” is the nickname of our black hero, not his real name. We are never told what his real name is. He apparently has one, but even the author/narrator of the story admits that he’s not sure what it is. He is nicknamed “Rainbow” because he is “colored”, and that may require a little explanation.

During the course of the books, the author explains that “colored” was one of the more polite words used for African Americans during the mid-19th century. The author wanted to make his stories educational for children of his time, so there are points when characters discuss how to address African Americans politely, explaining which terms are acceptable and which are not acceptable. The basic rule that the author establishes of not referring to anybody by a name you think they wouldn’t want to be called still holds true today, no matter who you’re talking about. It’s important to consider other people’s feelings in how you describe them, and it’s good to teach children to notice and care about other people’s feelings. However, some of the polite racial terms the author recommends in the books sound out-of-date to people today and might leave modern readers wondering if they really are polite. The answer to the question is that they were considered polite at the time the book was written, but since then, some of the conventions regarding polite racial terms have changed.

A major shift in the terms used took place during the Civil Rights Movement, around 100 years after this series was written. People were intentionally trying to distance themselves from the emotional baggage associated with the racial terms that had been used previously, so instead of using “Negro” and “colored”, they began using “African American” as the formal term and “black” as the generic, informal term. This change in terms was meant to help create a sense of a fresh start at a time when cultural attitudes were changing. Because this book was written in the 19th century, the terms they use as the polite terms are the ones that were formerly used as the polite terms before that cultural shift. Even though most people wouldn’t speak like that anymore, you can still see the use of these terms occasionally, particularly in the names of organizations that were created prior to the shift in racial terms, like the United Negro College Fund (UNCF, founded 1944) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP, founded 1909). So, yes, “Rainbow” is a pun nickname because he is “colored” in the sense of the racial term. Apparently, the author was amused that the term made it sound like he was colorful, like a rainbow, although I think he is also a colorful personality.

The way a person speaks does offer hints to their background and character. Jacob Abbott had a fascination for analyzing the details of human behavior and the ways other people react to the other people around them them. He was aware of what was considered polite in his time and how the words people use affect other people. In these stories, he deliberately offers teachable moments to show child readers the differences between people who behave politely and considerately and the people who do not. As you go through the stories, feel free to study the characters and their behavior. The author meant for people to notice who these people are and why they do the things they do.

This book is easily available to read online in your browser through NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICAN CHILDREN & WHAT THEY READ, I’m going to do a detailed summary below. If you’d rather read it yourself before you read my review, you can go ahead, but some people might want to know in detail what they’d be getting into. There’s nothing here that I think would be racially offensive because it’s quite a gentle, sympathetic story. However, I can immediately see a couple of reasons why this book and its series hasn’t become a better-known children’s classic. 

I wasn’t kidding when I said that the author goes into detail about some aspects of daily life and society in the 19th century. This story and its series, like others by the author, was meant to be education, so there’s a lot of teaching going on, both in the form of moral advice and general life lessons and in the specifics about how to handle money and negotiate business arrangements. It could still be interesting for someone studying daily life and social attitudes in the 19th century, but 21st century children might find it a bit dull. There’s more explanation than there is action and adventure, although I wasn’t bored while reading it, and there are a few interludes with character backstories, stories that the characters tell each other, and a strange dream Handie has. In the middle of the book, there’s kind of a touching story about a little boy and his widowed mother that I enjoyed, and it explains some of the reasons why the characters are in the situation they’re in.

Handie and Rainbow are the two main characters of the series, although most of this book focuses on Handie and his family. Their money troubles, an inheritance that Handie receives, and the arrangements that he makes on behalf of his family create the situation that causes Handie to hire Rainbow to help him with some work, which requires traveling to another town to manage his inheritance. The entire series tells the story of why they’re doing this, what happens to them on the journey to this new town, what they find there, and what it means for their futures, but it’s told in five installments. There are some spoilers at the end of this story to future stories in the series, which ruins some of the suspense, but this isn’t really meant as a suspense story. It’s a story about a couple of promising boys in the teenage years and what they do that sets them up for their future. One of them just happens to be black, and that’s something that figures more in the later stories in the series. This particular book has a few moments when the characters discuss race and the difficulties and discrimination that black people encounter in life, but it’s not a major focus. There is going to be outright racism in the stories, but this book mostly sets up the backstory of the characters and their situation.

Handie Level (his first name is short for Handerson, we are later told) is a poor boy who is reluctant to go to school because his clothes are so poor, but yet, he is eager to learn. Our narrator, an unnamed neighbor of the Level family, describes how Mr. Level has difficulty earning much money because he is not very strong and is physically deformed. He manages to earn sufficient money to keep himself, his wife, and their son in a basic way as a kind of repair man. He is very good at fixing things in his little workshop. However, he isn’t very good at managing the little money he has, and his wife isn’t very attentive about maintaining the house or the family’s clothes, making them look more poor than they actually are. It’s true that they don’t have much, but they could do better if they managed their resources better. It’s partly because they feel sorry for their poor state and not very hopeful about it improving that keeps them from striving to do better. In reality, they’re not that much worse off than their neighbors, but this feeling that they are is what keeps Handie from going to school and letting others see his poor state. Since he has not been to school so far and can’t read, Handie worries that he would be embarrassingly behind the other children if he tried to go.

One day, the kind neighbor/narrator sees Handie trying to teach himself to read. Wanting to help the boy, the kind neighbor gives him a book that will help him learn to read better than what he was trying to use. (The author of the story is probably inserting himself here as the friendly neighbor, especially because he also wrote other books about children’s education, children’s readers, and series of simple stories aimed at teaching children to read.) Handie is grateful and begins making more progress in his learning.

Handie also becomes more helpful to his parents as he grows older and takes an interest in learning to mend his own clothes. When his mother helps him to mend his clothes, he looks much better, and Handie praises his sewing ability. His mother is pleased at the praise, and we learn that her husband has been more in the habit of criticizing her efforts at everything rather than praising her. This constant criticism and lack of encouragement is another reason why she has not been trying harder to maintain the household and the appearances of her family. Handie’s praise encourages his mother, and with Handie’s help, she begins making more effort around the house and doing more mending. With his clothes looking nicer and his new ability to read, Handie feels more comfortable going to school, and he begins progressing in life.

As Handie grows up, he becomes more and more helpful to his parents, both around the house and in his father’s repair business. He begins taking jobs of his own and bringing in a little money. He helps his family improve their circumstances. Then, a new opportunity comes along. The man at the mill says that if Handie or his father can buy a horse and wagon, he would pay them good money to haul lumber for him. It’s a tempting offer, and it could be a job that Handie’s father could do that would pay him more than what he’s doing now, but Handie doesn’t know where they would get the money for the horse and wagon for either of them to use. Handie has been good about saving money from what he earns, but the amount they would need is a large sum.

When Handie finally talks to his father about the job offer, Mr. Level is upset. He has been very worried lately, and he reveals to Handie the reason why. Even though they own their house, there is a mortgage on it, and the mortgage holder (a lawyer in the village) is now insisting that the Levels pay him the full sum or the family will be turned out. Mr. Level doesn’t know where he will get the money to pay the full amount, and he doesn’t know where they can possibly live if they have to leave. Handie and his mother had no idea that Mr. Level had taken out a mortgage on the house, and they are distressed about the looming threat of eviction. The amount of money they would need to save their house is about the same as what it would take to buy a horse and wagon.

While the Levels are debating about what they can do, the story flashes back a few years to a little boy named Solomon Roundly and the reason why Mr. Level is in such financial trouble. Solomon belongs to an industrious but poor family on the other side of the village from the Level family. The family is saving up to buy their own farm when Solomon’s father suddenly dies of an illness. The neighbors do their best to comfort Mrs. Roundly and young Solomon. Among the neighbors, there is a black lady and her 12-year-old son, who sometimes looks after young Solomon and plays with him or takes him fishing. (The book uses the term “colored” to describe the black boy and his mother because that was one of the more polite terms at the time. There is a point later in the series where the narrator specifically explains this.) The narrator says that he doesn’t remember the black boy’s real name because everyone has called him Rainbow for as long as anyone can remember, and they’re not even very certain whether he ever had another name.

One day, another local boy, called Josey Cameron, is accidentally injured when he tries to throw a stone into an apple tree to knock down an apple, and the stone comes back at him and hits him just above his eye. The boy cries with fright and pain, and Mrs. Roundly takes him inside and tends to the wound. Mrs. Roundly asks young Solomon to fetch Rainbow and see if Rainbow can take the injured boy home in his cart. Rainbow agrees to take Josey home, and Mrs. Roundly tells him to be sure to drop the boy off close to his house but not right in front of it and to let him walk the rest of the way so that his mother will see that he is not hurt too badly. If Mrs. Cameron sees them drop off her son right at the door, she might panic, thinking that he couldn’t walk at all. The reason why this little incident matters is that it happens shortly before Mr. Roundly dies, and it starts off a chain of events which explains Mr. Level’s mortgage.

Mr. Cameron is so grateful for Mrs. Roundly tending to his son’s wound and arranging for his ride home that he arranges a little present for the Roundly family. He is a daguerreotypist, meaning that he makes daguerreotypes, which is an early form of photography. Basically, he has a photography studio. He has Mr. Roundly pose for a daguerreotype as a reward to his family for their help. Mrs. Roundly is happy to see the picture of her husband when they receive it, but later, after her husband’s death, she finds it a painful reminder of the loss. Young Solomon, seeing his mother crying over the daguerreotype of his father, decides that if it makes her so unhappy to see it, maybe he should get rid of it.

Solomon takes the daguerreotype and goes to see Rainbow and asks him for a ride into the village. Rainbow is happy to give him a ride, but he asks him why he wants to go there. Solomon says he’s going there “on business”, which makes Rainbow laugh because Solomon is so little. Yet, Solomon insists that’s the case and tells Rainbow he’ll see it’s true when they get there. 

On the way, Solomon insists that Rainbow tell him a story. Rainbow tells him the only one that he knows, a story about a man who killed a bear. (I find hunting stories rather gruesome, although I suppose 19th century children might have found this interlude thrilling.) Rainbow knows this story because his mother read it in an almanac once. Solomon asks Rainbow if he can read. Rainbow says he can’t read very well. His mother is too busy working to teach him, and it’s hard to learn on his own. He wishes he could go to school, but he says that the local people don’t like him to go. The other boys don’t want to sit near him, and people make trouble for him. Solomon wishes he could do something that would help, but he can’t think of anything.

In the village, Solomon asks Rainbow to take him to Mr. Cameron’s. When they get there, Solomon asks Mr. Cameron to make a daguerreotype of him, just like he did with his father and to replace his father’s daguerreotype in its case with his instead. Mr. Cameron is surprised at the request, especially since Solomon admits that his mother didn’t send him and he wants the picture for free, but he agrees to do it as a favor to the little boy. When Mr. Cameron makes the daguerreotype, Rainbow is standing behind Solomon, and he ends up in the picture as well. When Solomon sees it, he says that he didn’t mean Rainbow to be in the picture with him, but Mr. Cameron says that he doesn’t see a problem with it. In fact, he thinks that Rainbow’s presence really improves the picture and makes it “prettier.” Rainbow is surprised and flattered that Mr. Cameron, as a man of artistic sensibilities, thinks his face could make a picture more beautiful, and Solomon decides that the picture will serve his purpose as well with Rainbow in it. 

When he gets home, Solomon puts his new daguerreotype in the place where his mother kept his father’s picture, and he puts his father’s picture away for safe-keeping. In the morning, his mother asks him about the new daguerreotype, and Solomon explains what he did. He says that he did it so that his mother would think of him now, and not his father, so she would be less sad. His mother agrees that’s a good thing to do, and she says that she doesn’t mind having Rainbow in the picture, either, because Rainbow has been so kind to Solomon.

Taking her son’s words to heart, Mrs. Roundly decides that she needs to start thinking of her son more and planning for the future again. She has some money that her husband left her, so she decides to see the lawyer in the village, Mr. James, about investing it on her son’s behalf, so her son will be able to buy a farm when he is grown. Mr. James is the same lawyer who holds the mortgage on the Levels’ property, and the money that Mr. Level borrowed from Mr. James is the money that Mrs. Roundly invested with him. Mr. Level was in debt at the time, and he promised to repay the loan with interest, using his house as collateral for the loan. The money that Mr. Level must repay is being managed by Mr. James, but it’s actually for young Solomon Roundly and his mother. 

Mr. Level is not good at managing his money, he has been careless about making his payments on time, and because he didn’t tell Handie or his mother about it, there was no one else to remind him or make sure that he repaid the money he borrowed. Mr. James has already extended the loan and given Mr. Level chances to make payments, and Mr. Level hasn’t done it. Mr. James can’t in good conscience allow Mr. Level to not repay a widow and a fatherless boy the money he owes them because he knows they really need it. That’s why he’s insisting on payment now or he’ll take the house.

When we return to the present after the flashback that explains the nature of the problem, Handie decides that the only thing to do is to see Mr. James himself and try to negotiate with him on behalf of his father and family. On his way, he meets Captain Early, who offers him a ride. Handie accepts and decides to ask Captain Early for advice about debts and mortgages. Because his father doesn’t understand much about money matters, Handie also doesn’t really understand mortgages or what the family’s options are. 

Captain Early says that if the property that’s mortgaged is worth more than the current mortgage, it could be possible to take out a second mortgage from a different person and use it to pay off the first one, thus buying some time to fully repay the debt. Handie has some misgivings about this approach. Captain Early doesn’t think it would be hard to find another investor who would be willing to lend money in the hopes of earning interest on it, but Handie now knows that his father isn’t good at paying his debts or even the interest on them. Still, it’s the only sensible solution that anyone has proposed so far, so he decides to discuss the possibility with Mr. James.

When Handie goes to see Mr. James, they discuss the situation. Handie explains that he didn’t understand the state of his father’s finances before or he would have helped his father pay the debt, and Mr. James explains why he’s reluctant to allow them more time to pay. The reason why the matter is so pressing is that Mrs. Roundly and her son are living in a rented house, and the man who owns it is in need of money and wants to sell the property. If Mrs. Roundly gets her money back, she could buy the home herself, and she and her son could continue to live there. If she doesn’t, she will have to worry about where she and her son will live. To let the Levels continue living in their home while not repaying the debt would result in the Roundlys being evicted, and that would hardly be fair, since it was really their money in the beginning.

Handie agrees that it would be unjust to not repay the debt to the Roundlys and put their situation in danger, and he promises to try to work things out so he and his father can repay the money. Mr. James appreciates Handie’s practicality and understanding, and he says that it’s too bad that Handie is only 19 years old. If he was 21, he would be a legal adult, and he would be willing to invest in Handie himself to repay Handie’s father’s debt. The only reason why he can’t do it now is that, until Handie is a legal adult, his signature on any agreement wouldn’t be legally binding. Also, technically, under the law, Handie’s time and money don’t belong to him but to his father. Even if his father would allow him to have time and money to himself, everything that belongs to Handie, and even Handie himself, legally belongs to his father until he’s a legal adult. 

As for what Captain Early said about taking out another mortgage or loan, even if Handie tried to arrange such a thing, any loan made to him would really, legally, be another loan to his father. Even if Handie gave his father the money to settle his debt or any other loan, there would be no guarantee that his father would actually use the money for that purpose. Legally, he can do what he wants with any money Handie gives him, even if Handie is the one who earned it, and even if he just wastes it instead of settling his debts. The truth is that Mr. James has already approached potential investors about making another loan to Mr. Level, but nobody wants to loan him money. Mr. Level has been complaining openly to people in the village about how unfair it is that he’s going to lose his house because he hasn’t repaid his loan. By doing all that complaining, he’s publicly outed himself as a bad debtor, and while people feel sorry for him, nobody wants to trust him with their money.

The situation looks hopeless to Handie. All he can think of is that his family will have to sell their house and move somewhere else. Because they can get more money from the sale of the house than they need to cover the debt, they could use that money to move somewhere else. Mr. James says that whoever buys the house might lease it back to them so they can continue to live there. They would just be paying rent to continue living in the house rather than paying the mortgage. It’s not a great solution, but it’s the only one open to them, and they will be left with some money from it. Handie explains the plan to his parents and to Mrs. Roundly, and they all agree to it.

It will take a couple of months to settle the sale of the house, so Handie tells his father that they must try to earn as much money as they can during that time. Mr. Level says that there’s no way they can earn enough to stop the sale of the house in that time, but Handie says that it doesn’t matter. Whatever money they can earn will help in setting them up with a place to live and improving their financial situation. Thinking again about the offer of a job delivering lumber, Handie decides that, rather than trying to buy a horse and wagon, maybe he could rent one. He does so, his father begins delivering lumber, and he and his father begin saving up money and paying down the debt.

Then, Mr. James sends Handie a message to come see him. Mr. James has received word that Handie’s uncle has died and left him a small farm called Three Pines. Because his uncle left the farm to Handie and not to his father, Mr. James is to hold it in trust for him until he is 22. (This is one year past the age of adulthood, but this is what his uncle specified.) There is money to go with the property, and as the executor of the estate, Mr. James is directed to use the money to fix up the property and rent it out to a tenant on Handie’s behalf until Handie is old enough to have it. The bequest would be helpful to Handie if he could use it immediately to pay his father’s debt, but there is still the issue that Handie is underage. While Mr. James can rent out the property and use the money on Handie’s behalf, it would be against the terms of the will to use the money to pay Handie’s father’s debts. While helping his father would indirectly help Handie, that’s not quite good enough to satisfy the terms of the uncle’s will.

What Mr. James suggests is that they follow the terms of the will that require him to use the money from the estate to hire someone to fix up the property, and to that end, he will hire Handie to do the work and pay him for it. It seems odd to be hired and paid to work on a house that’s technically his, but it’s a logical solution to the problem. Because of the lawyer’s strict interpretation of the will and his role in executing it, he doesn’t think it would be appropriate to give Handie an advance on his work so he can settle the debt right away, insisting that Handie must do the work before getting any money. Handie thinks he’s being too strict, which is not really in his best interests at the moment, but he doesn’t see how he can argue. The proposition that Mr. James makes for him would still allow him to earn more money than he is currently earning.

When he tells his parents about the bequest and Mr. James’s proposition, they are happy that Handie’s uncle left him something but disappointed that Mr. James is unwilling to use the situation to help them more immediately. Handie himself thinks that Mr. James should have made a little exception to the rules to give him an advance on the money, although he has a dream that night that gives him a different perspective. In his dream, a fairy argues with a clock, telling it that it would do some good for it to go a little faster sometimes and a little slower at others, according to people’s needs. The clock says that the trouble is that, if he speeds up for one person, he might go too fast for another person’s needs, and if he slows down too much, it might cause trouble for someone who needs time to go faster. Because changing the flow of time can hurt one person at the same time as it helps another, it’s better for him to just keep the correct time. 

When he wakes up, Handie thinks about his weird dream and realizes that Mr. James is like the clock because he has to go strictly according to the rules, stable and predictable, to keep the situation steady for everyone. Sometimes, he might be tempted to do someone a favor by tilting the balance for them, but that can throw off other people who are also depending on him to follow the rules. Handie also considers the purpose behind his uncle’s will. His uncle and his father didn’t get along well, and his uncle was aware that his father was terrible at handling money. Handie himself has now become acquainted with his father’s lack of money sense and how it affects the rest of the family. He realizes that his uncle left his farm to Handie because he had heard that Handie was a practical boy and a good worker and would be more likely to take care of it. Therefore, he skipped over Handie’s father and left the farm directly to Handie, to be held in trust for him until he was a full adult to make sure that Handie’s father couldn’t use it for his own purposes or that Handie wouldn’t sacrifice something that would make a real difference to his future in his efforts to help his father. His uncle was planning for the long term, not the short term, something which Handie’s father never does but which Handie will have to learn to do if he wants a better future. Mr. James understands this thinking as well as Handie does, and that’s why he’s so adamant that they follow the terms of the will exactly.

When Handie speaks to Mr. James again, Mr. James reminds him that his father has a legal right to Handie’s time and anything that he earns through the use of his time. Time is a valuable resource, and Handie’s father owns his as a piece of property until Handie turns 21 years old. (In the book, Mr. James says, “You see the law requires that children should do something to reimburse to their parents the expense which they have caused them in bringing them up. … . They are required to remain a certain number of years to assist their fathers and mothers by working for them or with them. The time when they are finally free is when they are twenty-one years old.” This isn’t how society or the law would look at it in modern times, but I’ll have more to say about that later.) What Mr. James proposes to Handie is that he literally buy Handie’s time from his father, the remaining 2 years until Handie is 21 years old, for enough money to pay off the mortgage and give him plenty of extra money. If he does that, Handie will be working for Mr. James instead of his father for the next two years, and whatever he does or whatever he earns in that time would be for Mr. James. Handie agrees to this proposal because it would take care of his father’s money troubles. 

However, Mr. James improves the offer by saying that Handie has the ability to buy his own time, in which case he will be working for himself, owning his own time and his own earnings. He has spoken to a gentleman in the village who is willing to establish a loan for Handie, which he can use to buy his time from his father. As long as Handie stays healthy and continues working during the next two years, he will have more than enough money to repay that loan. Handie asks what happens if he gets sick or dies. Mr. James says this arrangement will require him to take out life insurance as security, to repay the loan in case something happens to him. The farm Handie has waiting for him can also be security for the loan in case Handie is sick or injured, and Mr. James will also endorse the note, meaning that he will pay the debt if Handie is unable to do it. It’s suitable for Mr. James to do that as the trustee for Handie’s inheritance and more legally-binding because Handie is still a minor.

Handie explains this new proposal to his parents, and they all agree to it. Handie’s mother is worried that this arrangement will involve Handie leaving home, and she doesn’t know what they’ll do with out him, but Handie says it’s necessary for him to go to the farm he’s inherited and begin fixing it up. It will bring in more money in the long run, and he will come home to his parents when everything is order and the farm is ready to lease to a tenant until Handie is 21. When they accept the proposal, Mr. Level is able to pay off his mortgage and save his ownership of his house, and he has enough money left over to buy his own horse and wagon to use in his new delivery job. With the family’s fortunes looking much better, Handie prepares to go to farm and begin his work there.

Hiring Rainbow

So far, the story has mostly focused on Handie and his family, and we haven’t seen much of Rainbow since he was helping young Solomon, but this is a small village, and Handie does know who Rainbow is. This is the part of the story that establishes the relationship between Handie and Rainbow and how Handie decides to hire Rainbow to help him with the work on his new farm.

As Handie prepares to go to the farm, which is near another town, Mr. James talks to him about the arrangements he’s made to provide Handie with money to pay him the wages for working for his own estate and also to allow him to buy whatever supplies and hardware he will need for repairs around the farm. Because Mr. James won’t be there to oversee things directly, he’s made arrangements to send money to Handie through another lawyer who lives near the farm. 

Handie is young, but he’s had experience as a carpenter. He can handle most of the work himself, but carpenters frequently need assistants to act as an extra pair of hands, helping them by holding boards in place or handing them tools as needed. Mr. James says that it would be appropriate for him to hire an assistant to help him, and he will provide money from the estate for that purpose. Since Handie doesn’t know anyone in this new town and wouldn’t know who to hire there, he decides that it would be better to bring an assistant with him from his village. He chooses Rainbow because, even though Rainbow is only 14 years old at this point, he’s big and strong for his age and is a good worker. He hasn’t had any training in carpentry at this point, but he doesn’t really need any experience to be an assistant. Rainbow is good at following instructions and is eager to do a good job and please people, and that’s more important.

Before he asks Rainbow if he wants the job, Handie tells Mr. James what he’s thinking to see if he thinks it’s a good idea. Mr. James says that, before he talks to Rainbow, he needs to decide how much money he would be willing to pay Rainbow out of the estate and what his accommodations would be while they’re in the other town. Handie proposes what he thinks would be a decent wage for an assistant and says that he will pay for Rainbow’s room and board. They will have to board somewhere in town until the farm is suitable for them to live in. Mr. James says that may be difficult because not every boarding house would be willing to have a “colored” tenant. Tenants in boarding houses all eat together at the same dining table, and not everyone will want to see at the same table as a black person. (This is just like Rainbow said that the other boys at school wouldn’t want to sit with him and would make trouble.) Handie is confident that he can find a place for them to board anyway, so Mr. James says that the plan sounds fine to him, as along as Rainbow agrees to it and Rainbow’s mother approves.

Handie goes to Rainbow’s house, but Rainbow’s mother says that he isn’t home because he’s working in Mrs. Roundly’s garden. Deciding that he should offer the job directly to Rainbow first before talking to his mother, Handie goes to find Rainbow.

Rainbow is working with young Solomon in the garden, and when they stop to rest, Rainbow says that he has a new story to tell, besides his usual bear one. A man read it to him recently out of a newspaper. It’s about a thief who was caught trying to steal money from a miser, and there’s an interlude in the main story where Rainbow tells this story. (Actually, it’s more like the thief was trying to get the miser’s money through extortion because he writes the miser a threatening note, demanding that he leave a sack of money in a particular place.) The miser’s sons set a trap for the thief and catch him.

As Rainbow finishes the story, Handie comes along and explains his job offer to Rainbow. It would require the two of them living in another town about 30 or 40 miles away for about 2 or 3 months. Feeling like he should tell Rainbow the hardest parts of the job, he says that the work will be physically rough, and he’s not sure exactly where they will be staying or what the “fare” (food) will be like, but he promises that, if Rainbow comes with him, he will pay him and that Rainbow will eat as well as he does himself. The physically hard parts of the job don’t sound appealing, but like most boys his age, Rainbow is adventurous, and the idea of going to another town, exact destination unknown, sounds exciting. Young Solomon thinks it sounds exciting, too, and he says he wants to go along. Solomon tries to prove to Handie how much he can lift, and Handie says that’s pretty impressive, and he would take him, if he could.

Turning serious, Handie asks Rainbow what he really thinks of the job offer. Rainbow says that he likes the idea, but he’s not sure what his mother will think and if she will be all right at home without him. Handie says that Rainbow can talk it over with his mother, and Rainbow persuades him to come along to see her and explain the job himself. At first, Handie is worried about the objections that Rainbow’s mother, Rose, might make, but actually, Rose is a sensible woman and sees that this is a good job offer for her son. She will miss him while he’s gone, but she doesn’t want him to miss out on this opportunity because of that. Since they’ve all agreed that Rainbow will have the job as Handie’s assistant, Handie and Rainbow begin their packing and preparations for the journey to Handie’s farm.

Even though Rainbow’s latest new story was one told to him by someone else, we are told at this point that Rainbow has made progress in learning to read and is now doing well enough at it to find it enjoyable rather than a chore. He is now able to read from the New Testament. His mother laments that he can’t write as well as he can read. She hasn’t been able to teach him more because she’s not that good at writing herself. Because Rainbow can’t write very well, he won’t be able to write letters to her while he’s away. Rainbow says that Handie could help him with that, and his mother tells him that, while Handie is his employer, Rainbow should call him Mr. Level. Handie is almost a grown man, and he is acting as grown man, doing professional work and being Rainbow’s employer and supervisor. (The book uses the term “master”, but they don’t mean it in the slave sense. This story was written and published before the Civil War, and slavery is legal during this period, but Rainbow is a free person, who is being employed at his own consent and paid a salary. The term “master in this case is more in the sense of a supervisor, someone who will be directing Rainbow’s work and overseeing the results.) Rose tells Rainbow that, if he has any problems on this job or if he does anything that causes a problem, he needs to be honest and tell Mr. Level (Handie) about it. If Handie knows what the problems are, he can help fix them, and hiding them would only make them worse. She has a little rhyme about it:

“Wrong declared
is half repaired;
while wrong concealed
is never healed.”

She also tells him that if anyone in this new town tries to give him a hard time or tease him because he is “colored”, he shouldn’t mind them. Rainbow says that’s very hard sometimes. Rose says that she understands but that fighting people wouldn’t do any good. He is likely to be outnumbered (that’s literally what it means to be a “minority”), so it’s better to use patience and show as little reaction as possible. They’re more likely to stop their teasing if he doesn’t give them the reaction they’re trying to provoke. Rose uses some local dogs as an example, pointing out how each of them responds to teasing. The one that just responds to teasing with a look of contempt doesn’t get teased as much. Rainbow points out that the dog who doesn’t react could probably head off further teasing if he put a scare into the teaser, but Rose says that only works if someone is big enough to put a scare to a teaser without actually hurting him and if the bully doesn’t have a bunch of confederates backing him up.

She further reminds Rainbow that the Gospel says, “that we must study to show kindness to those that do not show kindness to us.” She says that, while he’s away, she wants him to continue reading the New Testament and saying his prayers. She also makes a point that she wants him to think about the meaning of what he’s reading and have it in his mind that he will follow it in his life. She hopes that perhaps, during his time with Handie, Rainbow will improve his reading and writing ability and that Handie will help him. Before Rainbow leaves the village, he goes around to say goodbye to some friends and neighbors, and one of them gives him an inkstand and pens so he can write.

This installment of the series ends with Handie and Rainbow leaving on their journey to the new town, Southerton. We are told that, “Handie and Rainbow had a very pleasant ride, but they met with an accident on the road which led to a singular series of adventures. They, however, at last arrived at Southerton in safety, and spent two months there in a very agreeable and profitable manner.” This is kind of a spoiler for the next book in the series, which is all about their adventures on their journey. We know that they eventually arrive safely and proceed about their business, but the narrator promises to tell everything in more detail in the next volume. Actually, there are also spoilers for the rest of the series because we are also told that everything goes well with Handie’s farm, Mr. James is able to find a good tenant to rent it, and when Handie eventually returns home, he finds that his parents have been doing well and that Handie is able to repay the loan that bought his time from his father. There’s no suspense about any of that, whatever else happens in the following stories. In fact, the book says that the loan worked out so well for Handie that Rainbow thinks that he’d like to try a similar arrangement when he’s older. Handie says that, by that time, he might have the money to make him a loan himself.

I covered some of this above, but there are a few more things I’d like to talk about. Although the plot is a little slow and must of it focuses on how business deals work and the importance of hard work and prudent living, I actually thought it was an interesting book. What I found most interesting about it was the look at the daily lives and concerns of people in the mid-19th century.

I was a little surprised at the way the lawyer explained the laws concerning the ownership of Handie’s time and the laws about the obligations between children and parents. The relationships between children and parents and how they should behave toward each other, specifically what children owe to their parents are central to the story. 

The parents in the story aren’t perfect people. Handie’s parents have some obvious flaws, particularly Handie’s father. Handie and his mother would have some justification for being upset with Mr. Level for getting their family into this financial hole and then depending on Handie to work out a solution, but they’re not really angry with him. Mr. Level is within his legal rights to use his money and theirs in whatever way he wants as the head of the household and Handie’s father, even though it’s obvious that he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. Nobody questions Mr. Level’s legal authority over his family’s financial affairs, although everyone knows he isn’t good at handling money, and they haven’t been able to get him to improve before. However, Mr. James and Handie recognize that whatever solution they work out together can’t violate Mr. Level’s rights to make decisions about his family’s affairs and must respect his authority over his son. What Mr. James suggests to Handie is a way of emancipating Handie’s financial affairs from his father’s while providing Mr. Level with generous compensation, which improves the circumstances of the entire family.

The part about children legally owing their parents some form of compensation for the costs of raising them surprised me. I’ve heard of that as a social convention, but I didn’t think there were actual laws about that. I’m not completely sure whether the author was right about that part or not because I had some trouble finding a source to verify that, but if anyone else knows the answer, feel free to comment below and tell us. 

In modern times, there are laws about the care of children, and parents can be charged with neglect if they fail to provide certain necessities for their children, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a modern law about children giving compensation to their parents. After all, children can’t choose their parents like they can choose from among possible employers and negotiate their terms, so it’s not quite like entering into a business arrangement. I can see the logic of children helping the parents who raised them as part of family loyalty and affection, but the amount of care that family members show each other is difficult to codify because it’s hard to measure and put a price tag on human feelings. Emotional support is a natural and important part of family life, and it occurs to me that might be difficult to prove how much family members might have shown to each other. People value it, and it’s hard to say how much of that might be a service that they render to each other in a family. 

It also occurs to me that individual families in the past may not have looked at their family through a legal lens, even if they had the legal means to do so. When Handie speaks to his parents about reorganizing their family’s financial affairs and about his new position, repairing the farm he inherited on behalf of his own estate, Handie tells his parents that, when he returns home from this job, he will live with them again but that he will pay them for his room and board. His mother tells him that paying to live with them won’t be necessary because he’s their son, but Handie insists because he will be working and earning money as an independent person, no longer a dependent of his father. 

What that exchange tells me is that Handie’s mother doesn’t view him as an economic resource for their family. He’s just their son, and she loves him and would care for him, even if he couldn’t pay her for it. Their family isn’t overly concerned about money, they hardly even know how to manage the money they have, but they do understand family and human feeling. There are upsides to that because they are prepared to support each other just out of love and family loyalty, even when that would hurt their financial situation. The downside is that Handie has realized that, for their family’s future security, they’re going to have to be a little more strict about the financial aspects of the life they share together. While he is grateful for his parents’ feelings for him, he thinks that insisting on upholding his financial obligations to his parents will be more beneficial to them in the long run. 

Maybe people in real life looked at it in a similar fashion, depending on their own family’s circumstances. Maybe there were times when they didn’t care that much about keeping track of each family member’s financial contributions and insisting on exact repayment from each other because their feelings for each other were in the balance and/or because some family members might not be in a position to compensate each other financially to the same degree because of health reasons or other issues. If the law is really as Mr. James says it is, the rules about children compensating their parents might have only been invoked in situations where there was some serious dysfunction in the family, like if a child resisted working or helping out at home at all, and the parents were desperate. If the parents were satisfied with their relationships with their children, they probably wouldn’t bother to keep strict accounting of their children’s monetary value or get petty about the laws with them. At least, that’s my theory. In the case of the story, the characters are in a pretty serious financial problem, with the threat of losing their home, so they seriously need to straighten out their finances according to the law.

So far, because most of the focus of the story is on the Levels’ financial woes and how they straighten out their affairs, the story hasn’t gone into detail about race relations. However, I already know that this becomes more of a central theme in later installments of the story. At this point, we know that Rainbow couldn’t go to school like Handie did because he wasn’t welcome there. Nobody uses the term “segregation”, but that’s basically what it is. Nobody explains the laws regarding this kind of segregation, so I’m not sure if there’s an official law about that for this village or not, but there seems to be at least a social convention about that. 

Rainbow says that people have teased and taunted him about his race, although when he’s about to leave home with Handie, many of the local boys say goodbye to him in a friendly way. The book says that many of the local boys like Rainbow because he is kind, which made me wonder how many of those boys were the ones who didn’t want Rainbow in school with them. The story isn’t clear on that point, although I have heard of that concept of some white people liking black people as long as those black people “know their place.” I suspect that the situation in this town may be something like that. Maybe most of the townspeople accept Rainbow in a general way, as a neighbor and a worker and someone they might wave to or chat with, but they can get offended or even nasty if he starts getting above the station that they think he should occupy in life. We don’t have any specific names of people who have harassed Rainbow, so we don’t know if any of them are also sometimes friendly, as long as they think they have the social upper hand. It just strikes me that many of Rainbow’s relationships with the people in this village are probably conditional ones, the condition being that he doesn’t seem like he’s trying to be as good as or better than they are.

Handie and Rainbow haven’t been far from home at this point in their lives, and going to this new town will be a major adventure for them. Mr. James knows that Rainbow may have some problems from the people they meet along the way and that Handie may have trouble finding places for them to eat and sleep on their journey because Rainbow is black. However, Handie decides that he really wants Rainbow and that he’s willing to take responsibility for the both of them and deal with whatever problems they encounter. When Handie promises Rainbow that Rainbow will eat as well as he does, he’s promising that either he will make sure that people give Rainbow the services that they both need or that he will forgo those services himself. He will only stay and eat in places that accept Rainbow as well, whatever that means for them both along the way. Handie is becoming a young man, and as befits a real man, he’s taking responsibility for someone younger and is determined to look after him as both an employer and friend. There will be more to say about this as we continue through the story.

A Watcher in the Woods

The Carstairs family is moving from Ohio to a small town in Massachusetts because Professor Carstairs will be taking a new job as head of the English department at the local college. Fifteen-year-old Jan knows that she will find the move harder than her parents or her younger sister. Her father will be busy with his work, and her mother will make friends with the wives of other faculty at the college. Jan knows that her little sister, Ellie, is still very young and in elementary school, and she won’t find changing schools as difficult as she will. Jan isn’t looking forward to trying to fit in at the local high school.

The family’s first difficulty in moving is finding a house in this new town that they like. Because it’s a small town, their options are limited, and it seems like there’s something wrong with each of the houses they see. Then, their realtor suggests that they view the old Aylwood place outside of town. Living there would mean a longer distance to drive to the college and the girls’ schools, but it’s a nice, big house with some land attached to it. The land includes woods and a pond. Elderly Mrs. Aylwood can’t afford to maintain the place anymore, but she has been reluctant to sell the house. She is very attached to it and she wants to make sure that, if she sells, that she will sell it to the right kind of people, who will take care of the land and woods.

From the first time that Jan and her family visit the house, it gives Jan a strange feeling. She has the oddest feeling that someone (or something) is watching them from the woods, and it frightens her. However, when she tries to explain her uneasy feelings to her mother, her mother thinks that it’s her imagination. Jan can’t deny that the house and wood give her the feeling of a fairy tale and that Mrs. Aylwood reminds her of a fairy tale witch.

For some reason, Mrs. Aylwood becomes more welcoming to the Carstairs family after she sees Jan, and she begins asking Jan some rather odd questions about herself. Mrs. Aylwood admits that Jan reminds her of her own daughter, Karen, who she lost 50 years ago when she was only 15 years old. Jan begins to understand that Mrs. Aylwood’s attachment to the house is because it’s a link to her daughter’s memory, but she soon begins to realize that there’s more to it than that. Mrs. Aylwood asks Jan what kind of person she is and makes a cryptic comment about how Jan is a human but there are other things besides humans.

Jan’s uneasy feeling of being watched continues, and mirrors in the house are inexplicably broken in an x-shaped pattern. When she befriends a neighbor, Mark, and talks to him and his mother about the house, she learns that Karen did not die but that she disappeared 50 years ago. She apparently went out for a walk to the pond in the woods one summer morning and simply vanished with no explanation. Searches for her never lead anywhere. Most of the local people believe that Karen ran away from home, although it would have been out of character for her to do that. Jan begins to wonder if the watcher she senses in the woods could be Karen, somehow hiding out or having returned after all these years, although Mark says that doesn’t make sense. Then, remembering Mrs. Aylwood’s comment about things that aren’t human, Jan wonders if the watcher could be Karen’s ghost. What if she died all those years ago, and her spirit haunts the woods?

It seems like someone or something is communicating with Ellie. Ellie seems to hear something speaking or humming when Jan can’t. Something even suggests to Ellie that she name her new puppy Nerak, which Jan realizes is “Karen” spelled backwards. Is Karen trying to communicate with them, or is it something else?

The book is available to borrow and read for free online through Internet Archive. This book has been made into movie versions twice, but the Disney movie from 1980 is more faithful to the original story. I’ll explain why below, but it involves spoilers.

When talking about my opinion of this book, I really need to include some spoilers. This is a very unusual book because it isn’t obvious until about halfway through what kind of story it really is. From the beginning, it’s set up like a ghost story, with Karen’s mysterious disappearance, the sense of something watching the house and family from the woods, and something trying to communicate through Ellie. It’s very suspenseful and mysterious, but this is not actually a ghost story. It’s really science fiction.

Karen isn’t dead, but she has been trapped in an alternate dimension since she disappeared 50 years ago. A being from that other dimension has also been trapped in our world since then. This other being is the mysterious watcher in the woods. Jan correctly senses that this other being is also female and a child, although beings of its kind live extraordinarily long lives because time works differently in their dimension. What has been 50 years for everyone else has only seemed like a day to her. She wants to return home, but she has had to wait for conditions to be right. She also wants to help Karen, and she has been struggling to communicate with Mrs. Aylwood and Jan and her sister so she can tell them what they need to do.

In the Disney movie, there are a couple of major changes from the original book. The first is that the location is changed from the US to England, although Jan and her family are Americans. It also features a kind of initiation ritual that Jan was undergoing just as her switch with the creature from the other dimension happened, adding an element that seems supernatural, although it is still science fiction. At the very end of the Disney movie, Jan brings Karen back from the other dimension, but in the book (Spoiler!) Mrs. Aylwood goes to join Karen in the other dimension instead.

In the book, Jan’s mother worries about what life would be like for Karen if she returns, aged 50 years in what must have seemed like only a day, having lost most of her life, or what it would be like if she has not changed at all but her mother has aged 50 years, and the world has been through so many major changes since she left. It isn’t clear whether or not Karen has aged in the other dimension, but Jan’s mother’s point is that the world she came from has definitely changed. Karen can’t go back to her old life, and there is some sadness about that and about what Mrs. Aylwood has been going through since Karen disappeared. However, Mrs. Aylwood decides to join Karen in this other world, where she’s been. We don’t really know what Karen’s condition is in the other dimension because we don’t see her. She may have aged very fast there, although I think they imply that she has not aged at all because time works differently in the other dimension. Since time works differently there, it seems like they either won’t age further there or will do so much more slowly than they would on Earth.

Between the two movie versions, the Disney movie version of this book from 1980 is more faithful to the original story because it maintains the concept that this is a science fiction story and that the watcher in the woods is a being from another dimension. The movie version from 2017 turns the story into a ghost story with no science fiction elements. In the ghost story version, Karen is also still alive and hasn’t aged after being gone for many years, but the watcher in the woods is a ghost who is holding her captive. It’s a spookier version, but I think the logic of the original book, with its science fiction theme, makes more sense. 

The premise of the ghost story didn’t make as much sense to me because the ghost’s motives seem confused. First, the ghost takes Karen captive because she was staging a stunt for some friends where she appeared to be mocking the way he died. Then, he seemed to want to keep a girl for company, which is weird because it doesn’t seem like he interacts with Karen while he has her. He tries to make a bargain where he would be willing to release Karen in exchange for Ellie, but in the end, it turns out that human company isn’t really what he wants. (Spoiler!) He wants a ritual for his death that he was deprived from having when he was killed. The story just seemed to be all over the place with the ghost’s motives and desires. Is he out to punish Karen for her disrespect, lonely without human company, or just trying to get attention from the living to fulfill his final wishes? Even he doesn’t seem clear about that, which is why I prefer the sci-fi version. 

I also thought that the premise of the sci-fi story was more original, and I enjoyed the twist of a story that seems like a ghost story but really isn’t. If any sufficiently advanced technology might look like magic to someone who had never seen it before, as Arthur C. Clarke said, it makes sense that any being who was sufficiently different from the human experience might appear to be some kind of supernatural creature to human beings who didn’t know what they were perceiving.

The Disney version from 1980 actually has multiple endings because the first endings they filmed didn’t quite work and didn’t get a good reaction from audiences. If you’re curious about what the three endings are like, Jess Lambert explains them in her YouTube review of the movie.

The Secret of Grey Walls

Lone Pine Series

The Secret of Grey Walls by Malcolm Saville, 1947.

It’s shortly after Christmas, and Petronella (called “Peter” by her friends) is home from boarding school for the holidays. She has a strange dream about running through the woods with an unfamiliar girl and finding a house with gray walls, but she’s not sure where it is or what the dream means. She wakes up when there’s a fire in her dream.

Petronella and her father live by themselves in the countryside because her mother died when she was a baby. Her father misses her when she goes away to school, but he knows that it’s important for her to go, and although he would like to spend all of their holidays together, he also knows that it’s important for her to spend time with her friends.

When Petronella goes to visit her friends, the Mortons, Mr. and Mrs. Morton and their housekeeper, Agnes all receive news that changes the children’s plans for the remainder of their vacation. (This is after Mr. Morton is home from the war after serving in the RAF.) Mr. and Mrs. Morton have to go to London to see a lawyer about some business, although they’re vague about the reasons why. Agnes’s news is that her sister is sick and in the hospital. With all of the adults leaving the Mortons’ house at Witchend, Mr. and Mrs. Morton wonder who they can have looking after David and the twins until they return. They consider different people they can ask, but Agnes says that all of the children can come to the village of Clun with her. Her sister has a very big house, and she’s been worried about not having anyone to look after the house while she’s in the hospital. There will be plenty of room for all of them, and Agnes says that she would appreciate the company in that big, old place. The children can even invite the other members of the Lone Pine Club to join them.

At this point in the series, not all members of the Lone Pine Club have actually met each other. David invited Jon and Penny, a pair of cousins, to join the club while visiting the hotel that Jon’s mother, who is Penny’s aunt, owns in another town. This trip will be an opportunity for the whole club to get together and get to know each other. Jon and Penny are very excited about the trip, especially Penny, who is a talkative girl who enjoys meeting new people.

On the train to meet the others, Penny strikes up a conversation with a man named Alan Denton, who brought a dog onto the train. Denton recently left the Navy and is heading home to manage his family’s sheep farm near Clun. He is very surprised when Penny says that they are also going to Clun because it’s a very small town, and few people visit there during the winter. The old house where they will be staying is usually run as a boarding house for summer visitors, but there won’t be anyone else there during the winter. The old house is called Keep View because it has a view of a crumbling old castle. There isn’t much else left of the castle other than the old keep. The children are fascinated as Denton describes the castle and other points of interest in the area, like a circle of standing stones. He says that visitors sometimes dig for old flint arrowheads.

The other kids are going to Clun by bicycle, except for Peter, who is riding her pony, Sally. Along the way, the kids meet up with a caravan of gypsies they know from a previous book. (Yes, this is a mid-20th century British children’s mystery adventure story, so of course, there are gypsies. The book spells it “gipsies,” and they also call themselves “Romany.” In the case of this series, the Romany are friends of the kids, not suspicious characters, as in many other children’s books from around this time.) The kids tell the Romany where they are heading, and they say that they’ve just left Clun. Ordinarily, they like the area, but there’s been some trouble there lately. Someone is stealing sheep from some of the sheep farms. The Romany know that people are often suspicious of Romany, so they thought that they’d better leave the area before someone accuses them of being involved with the thefts. Before the kids leave the Romany, the Romany remind them about the special whistle that they gave to Peter, saying that if she blows it, any Romany who hears it will come to help.

Peter, meanwhile, has a disturbing encounter on her trip to meet the others. She meets some men whose truck has broken down. The men behave oddly, and although the truck says that it’s a furniture truck, Peter is sure that she hears the baaing of sheep inside.

The kids don’t start to put together pieces of what’s going on until they reunite in Clun. While they are getting to know each other and exploring the area, they suddenly meet up with Alan Denton, who is distraught because his sheep farm has been the latest victim of the sheep thefts. Peter mentions to the others about the strange truck with the sheep sounds, although Denton dismisses the idea that Peter might have encountered the sheep thieves on her way to Clun because he doesn’t think that the thieves would have been able to load all the sheep onto a truck without being noticed.

Meanwhile, a strange man called Mr. Cantor rents a room at Keep View from Agnes. The boarding house doesn’t usually get boarders in the winter, and the children had counted on having the house to themselves during their stay. Mr. Cantor says that he’s recovering from an illness and needs some peace and quiet, which is disappointing to the children because that means that they’ll either have to spend most of their time outside or being very careful not to disturb Mr. Cantor. Although the children like being outdoors, it is cold, and they know they can’t be outdoors all the time, and a houseful of children isn’t usually quiet. Mr. Cantor seems a little strange, and some of the kids get the feeling that he isn’t quite what he seems to be, but he knows a great deal about the history and landmarks of the area. He entertains the children with stories about local history and ancient burials, and they begin feeling better about him.

However, something happens that causes them to becomes suspicious of Mr. Cantor. After a visit to Mr. Denton’s sheep farm, the children get lost. They find a strange grey house and try to ask directions there. Nobody answers their knocks or calls even though the children are sure that someone is watching them from inside the house. Then, they realize that someone is also watching them from the woods. They briefly see this person leaving, and this person has a bicycle that rattles badly. When the children get back to Keep View, they realize that the bicycle they heard belongs to Mr. Cantor because it makes that same distinctive rattle. Was Mr. Cantor spying on them? Who was in the house, and why didn’t they want anyone to see them. Does any of this have something to do with the sheep thefts?

My Reaction

I’m new to this series of mid-20th century British mystery adventure books. This is the first book I’ve read, so I’m really getting to know them as some of them are getting to know each other. I was a little disappointed that this particular book seems to be set after WWII is over because I knew that the series started during the war and that the war was part of the story, but that does put this book contemporary to the time when it was written.

This story and the series in general does have a similar feel to other British children’s mystery adventure stories and series written around the same time, especially the Enid Blyton books, such as Enid Blyton’s Adventure Series and The Famous Five Series. Like the characters in the Enid Blyton books, the members of this friendship club attend boarding schools and have outdoorsy adventures on school holidays. The Romany appearing in this book is also a common element found in Enid Blyton books and other children’s books written around the same time. In all such books, there are stereotypical elements surrounding the Romany characters, although I think the Romany in this book were treated more kindly than the ones in Enid Blyton books. The use of the word “Romany” as well as “gipsy” is one element of understanding, but also the Romany characters in this book are friendly and helpful characters, not suspicious ones. There are people who are suspicious that the Romany are involved in the sheep thefts, but our heroes know that isn’t the case, defend them publicly, and help to expose the real thieves.

I really liked the addition of Mr. Cantor in the story. Like other kids’ mystery books of this type, there is more adventure in the story than mystery, but the appearance of Mr. Cantor adds that needed element of mysterious. For much of the story, it’s difficult to say what Mr. Cantor’s motives are and whose side he’s on. The kids have the feeling from the beginning that he’s not quite what he seems to be, but they find themselves having mixed feelings and debating back-and-forth about him as the story continues. When he’s nice to them and telling them stories about the history of the area, they decide that they like him and that they were silly to be suspicious before. Then, when he seems eager to agree with the authorities that the Romany are responsible for the sheep thefts, they look at him suspiciously again. There are some funny moments when the youngest members of the group, the twins Dickie and Mary, make friends with Mr. Cantor and try to distract him and keep an eye on him while the others do some investigating. The twins are irritated at being left behind by the older kids, but they do throw themselves into the roles of spies and put a lot of effort into making Mr. Cantor their special friend, guilting him into spending time with them. Mary gets Mr. Cantor to entertain them by telling them fairy stories and acts sweetly enthralled, while Mr. Cantor struggles to come up with story ideas to keep the kids happy, and Dickie thinks that the whole thing is stupid and little-kiddish.

I was a little surprised at the way characters in the book talked to each other at times, both children and adults, although I suppose I really shouldn’t have been. They use words that sound rough and insulting, like “stupid” and “ass” in very casual ways, both in describing themselves and each other. I’ve heard that before in British movies and television shows, but it always surprises me because it sounds so ill-mannered. Nobody in the book or in any of the shows I’ve seen seems to mind it, though. It’s just surprising when you hear someone who seems like they’re from the upper classes or who is supposed to have some of the refinements of a boarding school education throwing around words that sound rude and insulting with no thought about it.

There is a foreword at the beginning of the book that says Clun is a real town, but the author took some creative liberties with the landmarks in the story.

The Girl in the Window

Kiley Mulligan Culver lives in a fairly small town, Meander, in the southern United States.  Although not much usually happens in their small down, about a year before the story begins, a little girl named Leedie Ann Alcott was kidnapped.  The crime literally hit Kiley very close to home because she and her father (Kiley’s mother died when she was a baby) live on the Alcott family’s estate.  The Alcott mansion was once a plantation, and Kiley and her dad, who is an author, live in the old house that once belonged to the plantation’s overseer, so they know the Alcott family well.  Mr. and Mrs. Alcott are divorced, and Mr. Alcott lives in another state.  Mrs. Alcott owned a children’s clothing shop in town, Kiley would sometimes babysit or play with Leedie Ann, who was younger than she was.  In some ways, Leedie Ann was kind of like a little sister to Kiley.  At the time she disappeared, Leedie Ann was four years old, and Kiley was about nine.  Mrs. Alcott never received a ransom note for Leedie Ann, but everyone is sure that her disappearance was a kidnapping, not just a child wandering off.

A year later, when the story begins, Leedie Ann has still not been found, and no one knows what happened to her.  After Leedie Ann disappeared, her mother closed her clothing shop, and a strange gypsy woman named Pesha came to stay with her.  Pesha is mysterious and secretive, and no one knows why Mrs. Alcott has her staying with her, although they seem to be holding seances.

Then, one evening, Kiley looks up at the Alcott mansion and sees Leedie Ann Alcott standing in the window of her old room! But, before she can do anything, another, shadowy figure closes the drapes on the window.  By the time that Kiley can tell her father what she’s seen, Leedie Ann is gone.  Her father goes to the Alcott house to ask Mrs. Alcott if everything is all right and if she needs anything, and everything seems to be normal (or what passes for normal at that time).  Kiley’s father thinks that Kiley imagined the whole thing, but Kiley knows that she didn’t, and she is sure that she wasn’t mistaken and that it was really Leedie Ann.

Kiley tells her friend, Sarah, about what she saw and persuades her to help find out whether Leedie Ann is really in the Alcott house or not.  Sarah is nervous about it, but she agrees to go along with Kiley’s plan to go to the Alcott house and ask to use the bathroom, pretending that she has been waiting for Kiley to meet her at her house but that she just can’t wait anymore.  While Sarah is supposedly using the bathroom, she’s supposed to check Leedie Ann’s room upstairs.  Kiley can’t do this herself because she wouldn’t have the same excuse that Sarah would and because Mrs. Alcott would know that Kiley knows where the downstairs bathroom is and that she would have no reason to go poking around upstairs.

When Sarah follows through on Kiley’s plan and checks Leedie Ann’s room, she tells Kiley that she did see Leedie Ann there!  However, Pesha saw her spying and made her leave the house.  Kiley and Sarah think that perhaps Pesha has both Mrs. Alcott and Leedie Ann under a spell and is holding them prisoner in their house.  But, what can the girls do to help them?

Kiley comes up with a daring plan to trick Pesha into revealing what she knows about Leedie Ann Alcott by writing an anonymous letter to her as if she already knew that Pesha was involved in her disappearance, but the plan backfires.  The police reopen the inquiry into Leedie Ann’s disappearance (don’t ask me why they didn’t notice that the letter appeared to be written by a child), but Kiley accidentally implicates an innocent person.  Adults in town are nervous, and Sarah’s mother doesn’t want Kiley to see her anymore.  Just as Kiley thinks things can’t get any worse, Pesha asks for her help, offering a charm to help restore Kiley’s friendship with Sarah in return.  Pesha claims that her only purpose is to use her psychic abilities to help Mrs. Alcott find Leedie Ann and that what Kiley believed was Leedie Ann in the window was actually a mannequin left from Mrs. Alcott’s clothing store that Leedie Ann had always begged to have as a life-size doll for herself.  Is Pesha really as innocent as she claims to be?  Can Kiley trust her?  What about Mrs. Alcott?  Above all, where is Leedie Ann Alcott?

Although Kiley may have made a big mistake, the reopening of the kidnapping case does bring to light the real secret behind Leedie Ann’s disappearance.

One of the side plots in the story is about how differences between people can lead to mistrust because people sometimes get a false impression.  Kiley knows that her friends’ mothers don’t really approve of her because she is being raised by her father alone.  Some of her friends’ mothers, especially Sarah’s because she’s overprotective, think that Kiley is a wild child because she doesn’t have a mother to look after her, and they worry that Kiley will be a bad influence on their daughters.  Kiley does sometimes get into trouble because she’s a little daring and a little impulsive, but those are more personal character traits rather than the result of growing up without a mother, and some of her escapades are undertaken in the name of helping someone, like trying to find Leedie Ann.  Her friends’ mothers don’t understand Kiley’s intentions, though, and they never ask enough questions to find out what is really going on.  It seems oddly cold behavior from mothers to me.  Where I grew up, other people’s mothers would have taken more of an interest in a motherless child, purposely checking up on her and wanting to have her hanging around where they could keep an eye on what she was doing.  If they push her away, then she’s even less monitored than she was before.

However, Kiley realizes that everyone’s suspicions about Pesha, including her own, were also based largely on the fact that Pesha is different from everyone else.  For awhile, Kiley helps Pesha to hide from the police because Pesha fears their inquiries.  The two of them get to know each other better.  Pesha is actually a Holocaust survivor. Pesha has the tattoos on her body that the Nazis used to put on prisoners in their concentration camps (I’ve see those tattoos in real life, and I recognized them from the book’s description before Kiley understood what they were) and she tells Kiley about a place in Germany where her family was and terrible things happened.  Besides Jewish people, gypsies were also targets of the Nazis during the Holocaust and were sent to concentration camps along with them.  Pesha fears the police because she fears being locked up again, something that Mrs. Alcott tells to the police to explain Pesha’s sudden disappearance.  Knowing this helps Kiley to become more sympathetic to Pesha and more determined to help straighten out the mess that she helped to cause, eventually discovering the real whereabouts of Leedie Ann in the process.

Something that bothered me about the adults in the story, pretty much all of them, is their lack of interest in asking questions and taking charge.  Even after Kiley’s father realizes that she was helping Pesha to hide from the police, he doesn’t ask enough questions about why she was doing it.  He simply reports Pesha to the authorities and orders Kiley to stay out of it, just like he simply told her to stop imagining Leedie Ann Alcott and making up stories back when Kiley first saw the girl in the window.  Kiley’s father didn’t want to ask the awkward questions to verify what Kiley saw, so it was easier to assume that she didn’t see anything.  Part of that is a plot device, so that Kiley has a reason to dig for the truth herself, but it also figures into the way other adults, like Sarah’s mother, treat Kiley and how they approach the whole inquiry into Leedie’s disappearance.  Instead of checking on what motherless Kiley is doing and helping her father to supervise her, they want to just shrug her off as a problem they don’t want to deal with, figuring that someone else will handle it because they don’t want to get involved.  Then, when Sarah’s mother finds out about Sarah helping Kiley to write the letter that reopened the investigation, she refuses to tell the police the truth about it, allowing the investigation against Pesha to go forward even when she knew it was groundless, just because she didn’t want to get involved.  Disbelieving adults/adults not wanting to get involved is a trope of children’s mysteries because the adults’ non-involvement provides a reason for the children to investigate, but I still find it annoying and irresponsible.

Pesha’s innocence is finally established when Kiley finds the courage to admit what she did in front of everyone at Pesha’s court hearing.  Kiley comes to realize that a quality that she and her father both have is honesty.  Her father didn’t try to hide it when he discovered that Kiley was harboring a fugitive the way Sarah’s mother tried to hide the truth to avoid becoming involved and to hide her child’s involvement, and that’s something to be proud of.  The aftermath of her confession also gives Kiley the opportunity to spot the tell-tale clue of Leedie Ann’s current whereabouts, and Leedie Ann is safely returned to her mother.

When I Was Young in the Mountains

When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Diane Goode, 1982.

This nostalgic picture book is based on the author’s experiences living with her grandparents in West Viriginia when she was young.  It paints a vivid picture of Appalachian life in the past. The story doesn’t give any particular years to describe when it takes place, but the author apparently lived with her grandparents during the 1960s, although from the pictures, it would be easy to believe that the story takes place in a much earlier time. Partly, the style of the clothes and stoves give that impression, but for me, it was really the cloth cover over the camera that made me think it was during the first half of the 20th century. You can still get these covers, but they’re not as common in modern times.

In the story, the author describes various aspects of Appalachian life, starting each section with “When I was young in the Mountains . . .”  She remembers her grandfather coming home after working in a coal mine and how they would all have cornbread, fried okra, and pinto beans for supper.

For fun, the kids would go swimming in the swimming hole.  They would also use the swimming hole for baptisms. They would also use the schoolhouse as their church.

She describes the general store where her family would go for groceries and how they would have to heat water on the stove for baths.

Sometimes, they had to deal with snakes, and once, when their grandmother killed a particularly big one with a hoe, they took a picture of the children with it.

Overall, the story is about enjoying the simple pleasures in life in a place you love, surrounded by people you care about.

This is a Caldecott Honor Book. It is currently available online through Internet Archive. Sometimes, you can also find people reading this book aloud on YouTube. I particularly like this reading because I think the reader has a good accent for reading this story, and she comments on her own experiences growing up in the country.

The Yellow House Mystery

The Yellow House Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner, 1953, 1981.

This story in the Boxcar Children series picks up the following spring after the previous book.  The children’s cousin, Joe, is arranging for the excavation of the cave where the children found their Native American artifacts.  They’ve decided to use dynamite to blast open the roof of the cave to make excavation easier (I’m not sure if this is really the best way to get at artifacts that were sheltered safely for years in their cacve and were easily being dug up by children in their current situation, but okay), and although he had told the children that they couldn’t be there for the blasting, he’s changed his mind.  He’s even going to let seven-year-old Benny be the one to push down the handle that will set off the blast.  (Because this is one of the early books in the series, the children are aging from the first book in the series – Henry is sixteen years old, Jessie is now fourteen, and Violet is twelve.)

One of the people who will be working on the excavation is Alice, an old school friend of Joe’s.  Everyone can tell that Joe is in love with her, and soon, he proposes to her.  They get married and decide to spend their honeymoon camping out in the barn on the island, just like the children did the previous summer.

However, the children have started to wonder what the story is about the old yellow house on the island.  For some reason, it makes their grandfather sad, and he doesn’t like to talk about it.  Eventually, their grandfather tells them that their housekeeper, Mrs. McGregor, used to live in that house with her husband, Bill.  Bill used to take care of Mr. Alden’s father’s race horses.  He was a nice man, but weak-willed.  His brother, Sam, and his brother’s disreputable friends were often able to persuade Bill to do things that would get him into trouble, and Bill was never able to stand up to them.  One day, he vanished mysteriously from that house, and neither his wife nor the Aldens have any idea what happened to him.  There are only two clues about the reason for Bill’s disappearance.  One is money that Bill was supposed to give to Mr. Alden’s father for the sale of two horses that he managed on his behalf.  Mr. Alden assumes that Bill’s brother did something with the money and that Bill probably left because he was afraid to face Mr. Alden without the it.  Sam died soon after Bill disappeared, so they were unable to ask him about what he knew.  The other odd thing that happened before Bill disappeared was that Mrs. McGregor heard strange sounds in the night.  When she went to investigate, her husband was apparently just reading a newspaper, and he claimed that the noise was nothing unusual.  But, what was Bill really doing?

The kids want to investigate Bill McGregor’s mysterious disappearance, and their grandfather and Joe and Alice enter the house with them to have a look for more clues.  In a hiding place behind one of the fireplace bricks, they find a letter from Sam to Bill about the money from the horse sale.  Sam promised Bill that he would be able to pay him back more than the money he owed and tells Bill to meet him at a house in Maine near Bear Trail.  The kids persuade their grandfather to let them to go Maine with Joe and Alice over the summer to try to find the house on Bear Trail so they can find out what happened to Bill.  The trip will involve camping, hiking, and canoeing, but they’re up to the challenge!

Joe is familiar with Bear Trail because he used to work as a trail guide when he was in his teens.  They are also joined by another trail guide, Mr. Hill, and have adventures that include a storm and a real bear.  However, the real answers to the mystery lie at the Old Village at the end of the trail.

My Reaction

In a number of ways, this book is more adventure than mystery.  It doesn’t take long for the kids to realize discover Bill McGregor’s new identity.  However, what happened to the money is more of a puzzle.  Even Bill has been unable to find where his brother hid it years ago.  Benny discovers it by accident while watching a toad. 

One thing that had made me uncomfortable was how long Bill had stayed away from his wife.  When the kids confront him about his real identity, it turns out that Sam’s disreputable friends had lied to him, telling him that his wife had died shortly after he disappeared.  He is overjoyed to discover that she is still alive, and she is glad to see him when he finally returns home.

Mother Carey’s Chickens

The book begins with a quote from an older children’s book, Water Babies:

“By and by there came along a flock of petrels, who are Mother Carey‘s own chickens…. They flitted along like a flock of swallows, hopping and skipping from wave to wave, lifting their little feet behind them so daintily that Tom fell in love with them at once.”

This book is very different from the story in Water Babies (which is actually a very dark book for children), but the quote is foretelling some of the events of this story, and the characters refer to the story now and then throughout the book.  Mother Carey’s Chickens is the book that the Disney movie Summer Magic was based on.  The basic premise of the story is the same between the book and the movie, but there are also many differences in details.  For example, in the movie, the Carey family had only three children, and in the book there were four.  The oldest children in the family also seem older in the movie than they were in the book, and their stuck-up cousin Julia was also much younger in the book.

When the book begins, Mrs. Carey is not yet a widow, but she has received news that her husband, a Navy captain, is ill with what appears to be typhoid.  She has to go to him, leaving her four children Nancy, Gilbert, Kathleen, and Peter, at the house with their two servants.  (Kathleen was the child who did not appear in the movie.)  She gives them some instructions to call on their relatives if they need any further help and refers to them as her “chickens” in reference to the bit of seafaring folklore that the earlier quote mentioned.  They explain that this nickname for the children was based on a joke made by their father’s Admiral back when Nancy turned ten years old.

Nancy is the eldest of the Carey children (played by Hayley Mills in the movie), and from the way that the book describes her, I suspect her to be something of a Mary Sue for the author.  Nancy has a knack for making up and telling stories, and at one point, the book says, “… sometimes, of late, Mother Carey looked at her eldest chicken and wondered if after all she had hatched in her a bird of brighter plumage or rarer song than the rest, or a young eagle whose strong wings would bear her to a higher flight!”  Nancy and her younger sister, Kathleen, are both pretty, but Nancy is definitely the center of attention and a much livelier personality.  The book is complimentary to all of the children, however.  Gilbert is described as a “fiery youth” and little Peter, the youngest, as “a consummate charmer and heart-breaker.”  Although Peter is only four years old, the book says, “The usual elements that go to the making of a small boy were all there, but mixed with white magic. It is painful to think of the dozens of girl babies in long clothes who must have been feeling premonitory pangs when Peter was four, to think they couldn’t all marry him when they grew up!”  So, the Carey children are generally idealized as children, something pretty common in older children’s literature, especially in stories that are meant to teach certain lessons or morals, as this one does.

While the children wait for their mother to return home, they are on their best behavior even more than usual, with Nancy and Kathleen having the following conversation:

“It is really just as easy to do right as wrong, Kathleen,” said Nancy when the girls were going to bed one night.

“Ye-es!” assented Kathleen with some reservations in her tone, for she was more judicial and logical than her sister. “But you have to keep your mind on it so, and never relax a single bit! Then it’s lots easier for a few weeks than it is for long stretches!”

“That’s true,” agreed Nancy; “it would be hard to keep it up forever. And you have to love somebody or something like fury every minute or you can’t do it at all. How do the people manage that can’t love like that, or haven’t anybody to love?”

“I don’t know.” said Kathleen sleepily. “I’m so worn out with being good, that every night I just say my prayers and tumble into bed exhausted. Last night I fell asleep praying, I honestly did!”

“Tell that to the marines!” remarked Nancy incredulously.

So, the kids are pretty good, but perhaps not perfect. Still, Mary Sue characters usually do have a flaw that’s not really considered much of a flaw, making them more endearing.

Even if you don’t know the story from the movie, you may have guessed that when the children’s mother returns home, it is with the news that their father has died.  With the father’s death comes many changes for the Carey family, which is the point in the story where the movie begins.  Without the father’s salary, and with all four children less than fifteen years old, the family has to cut expenses, letting the servants go.

MotherCareysChickensJuliaComingThen, the family receives word that Captain Carey’s brother is in failing health and that his business partner, Mr. Manson, is seeking to place his daughter, Julia, with a relative.  Mr. Manson has already spoken to a cousin of the family about Julia, but this cousin has refused to take her.  The now-fatherless Carey family knows that taking on another relative will be an added burden on them, but Julia has no other family and nowhere else to go, so they see it as their duty to help her.  Admittedly, none of them likes Julia very much.  They remember her as a spoiled child who was always bragging about the wonderful things that her wealthier friend Gladys Ferguson had or did.  Even now, the Ferguson family has invited Julia for a visit before she goes to live with her aunt and cousins, but unfortunately, they have no intention of adopting her or even trying to care for her until her father is well themselves.  Nancy sees them as simply spoiling Julia and preparing her for a life that the Carey family can’t possibly support.

Then, Nancy has an idea that changes everything for the family.  She reminds them all of a trip that they took to Maine years ago and a beautiful old house that they saw in a small town called Beulah.  The memories of that happy time and idyllic house and small town call to them, and Nancy and her mother wonder what happened to the house.  They decide to talk to a friend of Captain Carey’s who had a small law office in the area, sending Gilbert to Beulah to find him.  In Beulah, Gilbert learns that the Yellow House (as people commonly call it, although it also has the name Garden Fore-and-Aft) belongs to the wealthy Hamilton family, who don’t live there but have used it as a kind of vacation home.  The father of the family, Lemuel Hamilton, is in diplomatic service and lives overseas.  During the last few years, the younger Hamiltons had used the house to host house parties of other young people they knew from school, but now the young people are living all over the world, and the house has been empty.  Gilbert’s father’s friend, Colonel Wheeler, and a local store owner, Bill Harmon, describe the house’s current condition to Gilbert.  Since the younger Hamiltons renovated the barn and put in a dance floor for their parties, it’s too fancy and no longer usable for its original purpose, which is why no farming families have been interested in the house themselves.  The men say that they can rent the house to the Carey family on behalf the Hamilton family (who, after all, still have to pay taxes on the property and wouldn’t mind a little extra money to cover it) for a sum much less than the rent of their current house.  The house could use a few minor repairs, and the barn is more fixed up for holding dances than keeping animals, but that’s no problem for the Carey family.  Living there would save the family a lot of money until the children are grown and able to start earning their own livings.  Even though Gilbert is only about fourteen, he is able to rent the house on his mother’s behalf.

The entire family is pleased, except for Julia, who is still a snob.  The book explains that Julia had always been a very well-behaved little girl although neglected by her somewhat flighty mother.  (The book doesn’t say exactly what happened to Julia’s mother, although she is no longer part of Julia’s life.  She may be dead, or she may have run off a long time ago.)  Because she was an only child and always seemed the “pink of perfection” (which provides the title of a song about Julia from the movie version of the book), always seeming to say and do the right thing, her father spoiled her from a young age, giving her every possible advantage he could.  When Julia first arrives at the Yellow House in Beulah to stay with her relatives, she still prattles on about her wonderful friend Gladys and all the luxuries she has.  The book says, “She seemed to have no instinct of adapting herself to the family life, standing just a little aloof and in an attitude of silent criticism.”  So, if Nancy sounded a little too wonderful in her earlier description, understand that Nancy thinks that Julia is too sickeningly perfect and smug.  Julia’s problem, as I see it, isn’t so much that she’s too perfect as she expects the rest of the world to be too perfect.  Because she is so focused on perfection, she isn’t sympathetic enough to other people or accommodating to imperfect situations.  As the book says, “She seldom did wrong, in her own opinion, because the moment she entertained an idea it at once became right, her vanity serving as a pair of blinders to keep her from seeing the truth.”  Besides being spoiled, she is very naive and rigid in her thinking.  She thinks that she knows what’s what and how things ought to be, and that’s all there is to it.

A major part of the story deals with Julia’s adjustment to family life and the realities of the family’s situation.  At first, she thinks that Mrs. Carey should save up for college for Gilbert and a proper coming-out for each of the girls in the family to give them all the advantages that life has to offer.  She’s sure that her father will get better and be able to help pay for everything when the time comes.  However, Mrs. Carey doesn’t want to wait on that hope.  She says that she’s sure that the children will be able to make something of themselves even without the advantages.  Matters come to a head with Julia when Kathleen gets tired of Julia complaining about everything and everyone and says that if her father hadn’t lost so much of her parents’ money as well as his own, the whole family would be better off.  Julia demands to know from Mrs. Carey if that is true, and Mrs. Carey says that she and her husband did invest in her father’s business, an investment which he may never pay back, due to his poor health.  She also tells Julia:

“You are not a privileged guest, you are one of the family. If you are fatherless just now, my children are fatherless forever; yet you have not made one single burden lighter by joining our forces. You have been an outsider, instead of putting yourself loyally into the breach, and working with us heart to heart. I welcomed you with open arms and you have made my life harder, much harder, than it was before your coming. To protect you I have had to discipline my own children continually, and all the time you were putting their tempers to quite unnecessary tests! I am not extenuating Kathleen, but I merely say you have no right to behave as you do. You are thirteen years old, quite old enough to make up your mind whether you wish to be loved by anybody or not; at present you are not!”

It’s an awful thing to say to a child that she isn’t loved, but it is something of a wake-up call to Julia to realize that the way that she was behaving was making herself unlovable to the people who should have been closest to her.  When she tells Mrs. Carey that Gladys loves her, Mrs. Carey says, “Then either Gladys has a remarkable gift of loving, or else you are a different Julia in her company.” Mrs. Carey tells her to consider what the Bible says about “the sin of causing your brother to offend.” It’s probably the first time that Julia was ever criticized for anything, breaking her perfect record of apparent perfection.  Julia has greatly provoked the rest of her family and realizes that she has earned whatever bad feelings they have toward her.  She has ignored their difficulties because she was too focused on what she wanted for herself and the way that she thought that life should be, not realizing how much harder she had made things for everyone.  For the first time in her life, Julia admits that she is not perfect and asks for another chance to make things right, marking a real change in her character.  Personally, though, I think that some of this drama could have been avoided if, knowing Julia and her behavior as she does, Mrs. Carey had spoken to her when she first came to live with the family, explaining the family circumstances in a straight-forward way and making it known that she expects certain standards of behavior from Julia when she’s in her house.  Making the rules and enforcing them them from the beginning may have prevented a lot of stress and saved Kathleen from exploding emotionally.

MotherCareysChickensLatinA character that appears in the movie, Ossian “Osh” Popham, is also in the book, although instead of being the store owner, he’s a local handyman who helps the family get the house in order.  His children, also characters in the movie, are in the book, too, although I didn’t like the way the book described his daughter, Lallie Joy.  It says that “she was fairly good at any kind of housework not demanding brains” and that she “was in a perpetual state of coma,” in case you didn’t understand that she’s basically stupid.  I always hate it when stories make a character intentionally stupid.  I did appreciate her explanation of her name, though: “Lallie’s out of a book named Lallie Rook, an’ I was born on the Joy steamboat line going to Boston.” I had wondered where the name came from.

While the family continues fixing up the house to make it nicer to live in, Nancy writes a letter to the owner of the house, 50-year-old Lemuel Hamilton, who is an American consul in Germany, telling him about her family and their life at the house.  Lemuel Hamilton finds her letter charming.  Seeing the picture of her family that Nancy encloses with the letter makes Lemuel think of his own family, scattered to the four winds, the children grown or nearly grown, either away at school or starting their first business ventures in various parts of the world.  He’s lonely for the comforts of having all of his family living together and surprised at how happy this much-poorer family looks in the old house in the small town that his ambitious, social-climbing wife always thought was beneath them.  Then, it occurs to him that his sons are of an age when they’ll start thinking about marriage soon, and he wonders what wives they’ll choose and what their family lives will be like.  On an impulse, Lemuel writes to the Carey family, telling them that they can live in the house rent-free as long as they continue with the household improvements, and he also forwards Nancy’s letter to his younger son, Thomas (tying the story back to the quote at the beginning of the book), who is living in Hong Kong and who was the one who always liked the Yellow House the most.

MotherCareysChickensTomRosesWhen Lemuel tells the Careys that they can stay in the house for as long as they like, unless his son Tom wants the house, Nancy begins thinking of Tom as a possible threat to her family’s happiness.  (She thinks of him as “The Yellow Peril” in a reference for the old xenophobic term used by people who were afraid of immigrants from Asia, since he would be coming from China, and as a pun on the Yellow House that they might be competing for. This term is also mentioned in the Disney movie.)  Of course, Tom turns out to be no threat.  Tom has been lonely pursuing his tea business in China, and Nancy’s letter and happy family life call him home to a romance that will change the lives of the Careys as well.  By the end of the book, Nancy is seventeen years old, old enough for romance and charmed by the romantic Tom.

The lessons that the story emphasizes are the importance of family relationships and togetherness over personal ambition and developing the ability to triumph over adversity instead of waiting for life advantages that may never come.  Like other books from the early 20th century, the values of hard work and cheerfulness are emphasized, and there is the implication that important people will recognize and reward these qualities when they see them.  Pretentiousness and snobbery are criticized.  A settled, happy family life is the ultimate goal.

Overall, though, I really prefer the movie to the book.  I think that cutting down some of the side plots improved the story.  Besides removing the younger daughter, Kathleen, from the story, the movie also eliminated other side characters, like Cousin Ann and the Lord siblings, Cyril and Olive, who also live in Beulah and become friends of the family.  Also, making Julia older than she was in the original book, closer to Nancy’s age than Kathleen’s, improves the sisterly relationship that the girls eventually have.
